It is a disturbing trend among AFL clubs that they must dream up these wondrous "camps" where camaraderie is strengthened and a player's sangfroid is tested.
These blokes have nearly 30 games of hard-running physical clashes ahead of them commencing in February. The major challenge at this stage of the year should be list management, to ensure that all players are healthy and ready to take on the season's workload when the barriers open.
Yet we have the ridiculous situation where Port are riding the rapids in NZ, Bulldogs palyers are lifting bricks at midnight and Essendon players were in open rebellion about the jobs they had to do. Yes, I can see that Sheedy really needed to know just what powers of concentration that James Hird possesses.
Meanwhile, Vossy and Lepper and Lynchy are taking it easy because their coach knows that their efforts will come when it counts.
Face it, AFL clubs are so used to putting these lads through the sausage grinder after injecting their veins with barbed wire, they just don't know what to do. They are paying these kids money and they don't know what to do with them.
They should have a light run before Xmas and that's it. The Players Association needs to step in and prevent this ridiculous trend from continuing.
