View Full Version : Tiger Exorcism
I come before you faithful tiger fans with a plea for a big footy exorcism.
In 1984 (yes 20 yeras ago) i was discussing with a few work buddies the relative merit of our respective teams.
I can remember argueing with a lesser supporter (can't remember which team) about the tigers and when asked about our form of the past two seasons (83 & 84) i can remember saying something along the lines of "given our record of the past 15 odd years I am happy to sit on that for a while.
I now realise that this unearthed the footy evil spirits and cast the Tiges to a lesser period than the preceding 15 years.
On the 20th anniversary of this faux pas I call on you all to exocise these spirits from me and the club.
Moderators i come before you.
Maybe this is a bit like Collingwood and the pointing of the bone! Their solution was for the bone to be officially no longer pointed at them. 2 GF appearances in 2 years for 2 losses seem to suggest that things are back to normal there now.
Therefore, logically, you will need to perform a counter-action (equal but opposite) to negate the effects of the original faux pas.
I would suggest that you will have to utter in a public place words to the effect of:
"given our record of the past 15 odd years I am NOT happy to sit on that for a while"
May I suggest that this be uttered in a public place (also known as a pub) in a ceremony immediately preceding the commencement of the 2004 season.
As this takes place when we play Collingwood, it does lend a certain kind of symmetery to proceedings.
This is only my humble suggestion!

And we've been putting the knives in the coaches ... all this time we should've been stabbing you!

I'm sure, if you work real hard at it, you could possibly incorporate a Spud Voodoo Doll, and lots of pins to assist in your quest for a solultion. :D
Alternatively we could sacrifice Pettifer and Houlihan to the Footy Gods (I favour burning at the stake in the middle of Punt Road Oval at the next family day) in a ritual that could be both symbolic in conveying our anger and cleansing in that we are saying, enough is enough, we've had a gutful and will tolerate no more. :D

I am wondering to what extent some players (eg Pettifer, Houlihan, Bowden) are aware that they are disliked by many of their own supporters, and what this might feel like for them if they did. Would it destroy their confidence, or make them more determined?Has any player ever given the game away as a consequence?

Nick Daffy refused to take part in pre-game warmups and asked to be traded because of the vitriol directed his way.
While players like Pettifer, Bowden and Houlihan can be frustrating and could probably do better, they really don't deserve what they get.

I don't dislike Bowden and am happy that he is still at the club. I believe he played under injury duress for most of last season and still has much to offer. I admit that I was not a fan of Daffy's but I have never been one to spew vitriol over the fence at him or any other Richmond player. What frustrates me more than anything is guys who have the talent but lack the courage to CONSISTENTLY put themselves on the line for their team. I can forgive a less skillful player who fouls up so long as he is committed to having a go. Fleming is perfect example. Malthouse has weeded out the weak links (players) at Collingwood who refuse to lay it on the line and assembled what most consider to be a list that plays above itself. Matthews has done similarly at Brisbane and it was well pulicised why Caracella wasn't getting a game early last season. There is nowhere to hide on the broad open spaces of the MCG when a player shirks it. Footy fans see it and don't forget. This is why I am critical of Houlihan and Pettifer, although I admit burning them at the stake is taking things a little too far.:D

i'm going down the old "stab the coach in the back again" route, but i believe it is validin this case. we've got a guy who won didley as a player at the helm and came from a club that a had the culture that the game on sat arvo was just a warm-up for the main event at the bar on sat night.
get terry wallace, or eade down there. premiership players, they had jeans as both their coaches, they've learnt their craft in a ruthless & winning culture and know what is required to win.
