View Full Version : Coverage of Shield cricket

I remember it used to be on pay tv, is that not the case anymore?
Anyway you have to say that the coverage of it is a joke. Even last night there were no highlights on any of the networks news services (even the half hour of rubbish that is fox sports news) of the Vic v NSW game and on Sports Tonight there was a good 12 seconds worth which didn’t even show the winning runs being hit.

Yet I look at the Age internet site and the fourth most viewed article in the whole paper is the one about the game (and it was the most viewed sport article), despite it not being highlighted to the extent of the tennis articles. So obviously there is interest out there – maybe if the media gave it a better go we may start to see some decent crowds?

Aside from Victoria leading the comp it has been a brilliant season, look at how many games have gone down to the death. Anything would be better than following the games on baggy green.

I know they used to show the games on C7 (Austar/Foxtel), not sure if that channel is still in existence nowadays though.

C7 used to cover the shield cricket, and was run by channel 7... It was on Optus and Austar, but Optus pulled the plug on it once channel 7 lost the football and then it died because the money wasn't coming through for it from austar alone, and now everyone has fox sports... It's a shame, i used to like watching the shield cricket on it...

Surely someone would be coving the Pura Cup final this year…?

Have you tried to access the scores when you can't get to the net? The scores on radio is hopeless- if you want to hear the other scores (games that your home state is not playing in), you have no chance. Even the so called home or cricket can spend 10 seconds updating the score.

No wonder no one goes to the games.

Don't ABC radio do the coverage over east?

In WA we get all of the home games covered ball by ball. We used to have 6AR doing it as well, then Radio Fremantle? but im not sure they do it anymore.

Ah, no.

We are lucky to get a score during the hourly news (the score always being 20 minutes old).

One of the sacrifices of living in a big city with plenty happening.

At worst they should at least have a highlights show each week.

Only ball by ball on the weekend. Even then the ABC goes on about basketball, domestic soccer and golf, that people don't care about.

The ironical thing is that you catch watch the games in India live!

We get coverage on the weekend, i certainly wouldn't call it ball by ball.

The only chance of us getting any ball by ball is if we make the final.

The last time we won it we had good radio coverage.

Southern Grandstand do some ball by ball on weekends, but only when there are no internationals on.

For Victorian games at home, the web can be a wonderful tool.

The MCG website (www.mcg.org.au), actually has a webcam trained on the scoreboard, where you can actually see not only the score ticking over, but, everything that the scoreboard at the ground shows.

Where would we be without BaggyGreen!

In WA they sometimes showed the state games on Channel 31 - usually the Remax Cup (vs Zimbabwe this year) and some one dayers.

Much as I like Fox Sports, I wish we could keep it but also have C7 brought back. I liked the Shield cricket and NSL telecasts.
ABC radio describes a fair bit of it on weekends, but it only gets a run on the radio during the hourly news on weekdays. But, considering there's only a couple of hundred people at the ground, the overall coverage isn't really anything we've got adequate reason to gripe about. There's heaps of better-attended events getting far inferior coverage.

I'd love to see Shield cricket on Pay. Much better than the plethora of American rubbish that seems to shoved in our faces.

Crappy U.S sports should be confined to that ESPN channel.

I really do wish that they put some form of coverage of games.

Heres an idea for a channel. Fox Sports 3 - split between the AFL, and the Sheffield Shield cricket. Say 90% AFL and AFL news and 10% domestic cricket news during winter, and 90% domestic cricket and related news news with 10% AFL news during the summer.

Would also end this inane replay of practically every single match from 2003, which as interesting as it can be, it does get boring watching a whole season over again which we've already seen.

Or if that is unfeasable, it would be good for channel 9 to have an hour highlights package or something during the night of each days play during the shield comp. (Unfortunately its unrealistic to expect comercial tv to show full live coverage of the sheild comp :()

I just looked in the TV Guide and Channel 31 here in Perth were showing the last 2 sessions of the Sheffield Shield match between WA and Qld. Very impressive!

Looking at the sh1te on Fox Sports throughout the day, they could do worse than to cover the odd game, at least the final. First of all, we need to improve the Ch9 coverage which is disgraceful at best

I'm amazed that people could be so incensed by an lbw decision against a Vic batsman in the recent NSW vs Vic game, without seeing it. "Umpire Fowler you are a joke", was it not? The radio guys really must paint a picture. Must be that NSW bias again.
