If so, what is your favourite film?

Mine would be "Spellbound".

Awesome director

North by Northwest.

Awesome director, but don't discount the contributions of Ernest Lehmann, perhaps the greatest screenwriter of all time.

The Birds (or is it just called Birds?) was pretty good, I like some others, I just can't remember their names. Uses to like watching the "Alfred Hitchcock Hour" on TV1 until I lose Austar.

Sabotage

The Thirtynine Steps

Rebecca

Notorious

Rear Window

Vertigo

Psycho

Man was a genius, if a sick one, and a great storyteller

Liked what he did with charcters and actors eg made Ingrid Bergman a drunk and effectively a **** and Cary Grant a sleazy pimp and OSS man in Notorious - great film, and hard not to like anything with Claude Rains.

And who can forget Mrs Danvers standing next to Rebecca's dowdy replacement next to the open bay window saying "he doesn't love you, he never loved you... go on, it's easy..." as she encorages her to jump to her death.

Wonderful stuff.

Rear Window - how to do a scary movie without blood and guts.

But the whole method of suspense he used was amazing. Timing and small details. Never cluttering things up with excess characters. places or sub-plots.

Not hugely familiar with all his movies, but I really like North By Northwest (the ending was a bit abrupt for my liking but the movie itself kept me hooked all the way) and Rear Window, although I've only seen that once.

I was born at the tail end of his peak and first saw many of his movies when I was a child on TV.

So it's interesting to see things like Vertigo in the recent past and realise that it's not so much about vertigo as about obsession, even necrophilia.

On the first few viewings, you're pretty sympathetic about what happens to Scottie, but on subsequent showings you wonder if it all wasn't to set up showing you Scottie's obsession?

A great plot, a good portrait of a broken man who people will pray upon. The public humiliation. The guilt. The obsession and a fantastic and twisted end to the story and death.

That's why it's my favourite.
