FitzroyRamone eMailed this to me this morning, and asked me to pass on apologies for it being so late. Don't forgive him, he's a prick :D

WICKS CAN'T HOLD A CANDLE TO REDS

The Fitzroy Reds showed why they are firming as a potential finalist in Section D3 with another convincing victory, their fourth in a row. The unlucky opponent this time was Elsternwick, who weren't in the game from the very start. In the end, the Wicks couldn't hold a candle to the supreme Reds, going down to the tune of 110 points.

Right from the start, you could tell today was going to be a long day for Elsternwick. The Reds leapt out of the gates like a pissed off bull at a rodeo. With Krusty Addicott getting plenty of the leather, Banna's form continuing in the ruck, and Willy Ronke taking some nice marks in front of goal (three goals for the term), the Reds soon found themselves up by 45 points at quarter time. It was the Reds most impressive quarter of the season thus far, their fitness and pace evident as each player won his position. The applause from a healthy Brunswick Street crowd demonstrated the delight us supporters got from such a fine display of football.

Elsternwick, while not necessarily showing it on the scoreboard, lifted in the second term. Or perhaps it was a case of Fitzroy dropping down a gear after their blistering first term. Kicking to the eastern end of the ground, the Reds made a number of errors around the centre and forward line, resulting in four goals to one for the term. Wharfie was strong across half-back, Mush Jackson got plenty of possessions, as did Joey Vernali who was good around half forward. Going in at half-time, the reds led
comfortably by 62 points.

Kicking to the Brunswick Street end of the ground, the third term played out pretty much as the second quarter. Again, Elsternwick had plenty of the ball, but couldn't get establish a system in the same vein as the Reds. It's OK to get plenty of the ball, but if you can't get it into your forward line, or stop your opponents from doing so, your going to find yourself getting nowhere. After a slow start to the quarter, the Reds machine started to dominate, kicking goals at ease. With Jezza Rawlins taking control at
centre half forward and Shane Popito kicking 3 for the term, an 85 point lead at ¾ quarter time was just reward for another good quarter of attacking footy.

Just as they did in the third quarter, the Reds kicked five goals in the last. Under overcast skies, the Reds did what they had to in the last quarter against a side that, while not lacking heart, didn't have the goods on the day. Five different goal kickers in the last term, and again the Reds had good players all over the field. Innan Auden, Hitman Hart and Jezza were most prominent in an uneventful last term. Uneventful as far as the football concerned, but entertaining if you happened to be standing behind the goals
at the eastern end of the ground, where, like against South Melbourne two weeks ago, a nasty brawl erupted behind the goal. Quite lucky that there isn't 50 cameras covering games in the VAFA, otherwise a few players might have been contemplating a break on this side of the fence, if you know what
I mean. However as the final siren sounded, the fights were forgotten and both sides demonstrated the noble code that most footballers live by, what happens on the field is forgotten when the game is finished. "Sure, you nearly ripped my nuts off and I'm wearing my nose across my face, but good game anyway". Elsternwick tried, but trying sometimes isn't enough against a
side like the Reds, who in the end, deserved to celebrate a magnificent 110 point victory.
