Meh, no huge suprises there really(Apart from Crowe and Kidman missing out). Good to see Jonny Depp and The Girl from Whale Rider picking up nominations though.

It's a bit disappointing to not see any of the LOTR cast nominated for best supported actor/ess. Especially Sean Austin as Sam.

For best director it will most likely be either Peter Jackson or Sofia Coppola, for making quite easily the best films I saw last year.

Thank god Tom Cruise didn't get nominated!! :)

No Russell and no Nicole is good for Oscars.

Russell's performance was very good but the scope of it was limited.

Thought Sean Penn was excellent in Mystic River but Bill Murray should run him close, especially given Penn's anti establishment views.

Robbins is a shoe in for best supporting actor in Mystic River.

Has anyone seen Theron in Monster??

yeh.. she packed on the pounds...
i'd watch it to see christina ricci..

quite interesting in that while grown up... she was attacked and almost raped by her father... who was then shot dead by her mother...

she would be red-hot fav. to win best actress...

i'm really hoping bill murray gets it for best actor... go bill !

Penn had the flashier role in Mystic River but Tim Robbins stole the film.

FWIW I think Bill Murray would be a more deserving winner but we all know how it works.

Penn has paid his dues and is likely to rewarded by the Academy.

Surely Andy Serkis should have got some sort of nomination too, but I guess the CGI is clouding the issue.
I may be biased, but LOTR:ROTK will clearly clean up amongst this lot.

I could have sworn City of God (great film from Brazil) was nominated last year as well

Interesting that Miramax, who are the studio most guilty of spending obscene amounts promoting their films for Oscars, didn't get a Best Film nominee for what must be the first time in years.

I think the Academy changed the rules so that they couldn't bribe their way to yet another Best Picture Oscar...

Don't know about Sean Penn's role in Mystic River - I just kept seeing Jeff Spicoli playing at being Robert DeNiro.

He's an infinitely better actor than anyone else on the list.

If that's what you mean by "paying his dues" then yes, he is an exceptional actor and deserves to get the award.

Come on, Johnny Depp is on the list and he is a remarkable actor.

Bill Murray is probably one of the most underrated actors of all time. The man is brilliant.

Love Bill Murray but he's a one charachter man.

Depp is good, but again fairly limited.

Penn is definitely one of the most underrated actors of all time. He might be slightly nuts, but he's a freakishly good actor, accross many different ranges.

I cant see how every man and his dog thinks its a huge shock that Crowe didnt get a nomination. Is it because he is an Aussie that everyone is saying its a shock? I found his role in Master to be boring, uneventful, unemotional and nowhere near Oscar winning so for the life of me I cant see why its a huge shock at all. But thats just me.

Kidman wasn't nominated because there isn't a over acting category (she would get it every year). Sean Penn excellent in Mystic River and 21 Grams. Naomi Watts deserves to win very good performance
