View Full Version : Take it back

Tim Watson was on the Radio today and said if he could take back a football game and go over it all again it would be the 1990 Grand final. Reckons he would win this time.

I thought about this and my moment is the first final in 94, when Brownless kicked the goal after the siren.
I wasn’t at the game as I listened to it on Short Wave Radio from Australia Radio in the rooftop of a house in LA, with WA beer (which I found out was off next day) anyway we lost the game as history shows.

If I had my “time back” when Ozzie kicked the goal to put us in front I would have shouted to Joyce the following

There is TEN seconds left Allan. gets every player in the circle and keep the ball in at all cost. Why he didn’t do this in the first place still confuses me.

Anyway maybe some of you have a Take it back"

P.s If you have seen the movie Donnie Darko maybe this is possible

The '94 final was hard to take but the '97 prelim was far worse. If I could ge back it would be '97 no doubt.

Absolutely! At the '94 loss I was in shock and saddened. In '97 I was in mourning. I never thought anything could make me cry at the footy until that day.

We wait in hope.....

In 1994 I expected to lose, we also didn't blow a big lead and it was only a qualifying final. In 1997 I expected to win, 1994 was bad but was no where near as bad as 1997, 1999 versues the eagles was probably worse then the 94 game i my mind because again I expected us to win

Has to be the 97 prelim.

i remember sitting in the stand at 3/4 time worrying about how I could only get 4 GF tickets and there were 5 people (incl. me) that I wanted to take! Got just a little bit ahead of myself.

97 prelim every time. The greatest wasted opportunity in all my years supporting the Dogs.

A few people around me left at 3/4 time to go get in the queue at the Arts Centre. A few points come out of that.

1. How can any one leave a game before it's finished no matter how far behind (or in front) you are. There's always something to be picked up on or positives you can salvage.

2. Don't count your puppies before they are whelped.

I refuse to EVER watch a replay of the 97 prelim! I remember the day clearly, I did not say a word for at least 1hr after the game.
Who would have thought I would experience a similar situation at the MCG just 2 months later when Iran came from 2 goals down to down Australia in the soccer and qualify for the world cup.

Yes, definitely the game that hurts the most that I have ever been to...the 97 prelim...seeing the emotion of Rohan Smith pounding the turf....and looking around at all the other doggie supporters who were in as much shock as I.

You were in shock!

Not even the madcap antics of Pee Wee Herman in "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" could make me smile that night!!!!!!!!

It was like deja vu!
I could believe the same thing happened within 2 months.

I never been to a AFL GF, but the atomosphere that Nov night was electric and 100 times better than any football game I've been to. For the first 70 minutes, I never felt so proud and patriotic.

Hmmm the laws of Karma say that the next time we are in this position we wil WIN!

97 prelim was my "take it back". The Adelaide song rang in my ears all summer. It hurts more as I reckon we would've beat the Saints the next week. Oh man what a match that would have been . ooooooooohhhhh:confused: :(

97 prelim - The feeling of hopelessness - of seeing my 11 yo son and his friend crying - we would have won the flag - bugger

If only Libba....If only West steadied and kicked it straight - If only Huddo connected properly off the ground....we only needed one of those.....

Only thing worse is seeing it every marathon on GF eve.

Its OK - I'm over it......really

Tell me about it. Top of the 8th inning , just six outs away from getting into last year's World Series, Cubs leading 3-0. Cubs lose 8-3. We lost the next day, too, to end it for us, but we all knew it was too late. We had our chance and we blew it. I told my nephew as we watched the game and the Marlins started to score, that it was the '97 Prelim Final all over again. I had just told him I had planned to go to Wrigley Field the next morning to get some souvenirs, just like I was wondering where my Grand Final seat was going to be at three quartrer time of 'that' match. :(

I, too, have never seen a replay of the '97 Prelim. I had taped it and when I got home after the match I took it out of the VCR and never watched it. I think I threw it out later.

Totally felt the same way, its not too often you get 90,000 people barracking for the same team.
To see an Asian sitting beside me with his hand on his chest singing the Australian national anthem gave me goose bumps!
It reiterated what I always knew, we live in the best country in the world!

For those of you who want to relive the joy ... and agony of 97, this is what is going to be on the Fox Footy Channel on 20 Feb (6 a.m. & 4 p.m):

W Bulldogs 1997 Season Highlights
1997, the year that put the bite back into the Bulldogs. Coach Terry Wallace and centre half forward Chris Grant analyse a season that saw them finish third on the ladder, produce brilliant finals footy and then lose the preliminary final to Adelaide.

Cheers!
