Reading his profile, pretty tall kid. Good size, although may need to bulk up a bit.
Amazing how fast this seems to be all coming together. Very exciting.

I thought the same , i read he was 200cm and 80kg , thats a lot of filling out there.

GC17 beat Lions to the punch over ThompsonTerry Wilson

THE GC17 bid team has beaten the Brisbane Lions to the punch by adding promising young ruckman Rory Thompson to the list of contracted players.

Thompson, 17, became the eighth Queensland teenager to commit to the Gold Coast Football Club, which will play in the Victorian TAC Cup (under-18) next year, the Victorian Football League in 2010 and hopefully the AFL by 2011.

Thompson's desire to stay close to his family was the clincher for the GC17 team.

It's believed his Velocity Sports management team received a guarantee from Brisbane they would draft the Southport youngster.

"I have a strong connection with my family and I prefer to live here rather than having to move to Brisbane," said Thompson.

"But if I nominated for the national draft, I could end up anywhere. Down the track I'd love to be a part of a Gold Coast team in the AFL.

"It'd be a dream come true to be running out for the Coast in their first game."

A Queensland under-16 and under-18 representative, 200cm tall Thompson is the son of Sharks hall-of-famer and dual premiership full-forward Brett. Thompson Jr played two AFLQ seniors games with the Sharks this season and was a standout for the reserves in the finals.

He originally played rugby league with Parkwood Sharks but jumped the fence (the league and Aussie rules grounds are side-by-side), and started rules with the Southport under-12s.

Thompson has just completed Year 12 at Helensvale. THE teenager voted Ireland's best young Gaelic footballer will train with St Kilda later this month.

A first-year bottom-age U18 selection who was rated by Queensland officials as unlucky to miss the 2008 AIS/AFL Academy squad. A laconic type who was a Queensland U16 representative in 2007, he is a lightbodied half forward with long arms, excellent hands and a fine all-round skills package, and has been likened to Mark Bayes. Also a State U17 fast bowler, he just missed a Queensland Bulls rookie contract for the 2008-09 season.

Also mentions that he's 199-200cm. 84kg. Being bottom aged, it'll mean that he's still growing.

Back in 2009, locally raised ruckman Rory Thompson was the eighth Queensland teenager to commit to the Gold Coast Football Club, as it was then known.

A Southport Sharks junior and a Queensland under-16 and under-18 representative, the strongly built, two-metre tall Thompson is the son of Sharks hall-of-famer and dual premiership full-forward Brett.

He played around half a season in the VFL last year and improved with every outing. A surprisingly physical presence in the centre for such a young ruckman, Thompson also showed a natural goal-kicking affinity when given opportunities forward.

Suns defender on brink of return.

TALL Gold Coast Suns defender Rory Thompson is hoping to be passed fit to make his return from groin surgery in the club's reserves on Saturday.

Thompson, who was one of the 2011 season surprise packets after being convinced to try his luck as a backman, is set for a return to action playing for the Suns' seconds in an NEAFL match against Sydney at the SCG on Saturday morning.

"Hopefully I can have a run this weekend, that's if I get through training on Wednesday," he said.

"If I get through that all right I should be chance to play."

Thompson underwent the knife to rectify a groin problem he first experienced while on the Suns' high-altitude training camp in Arizona.

"Maybe it was just the load going through the body, but I kept training and tried to run it out," he said.

After watching the Suns being torn apart by Adelaide last weekend, a return by Thompson to the AFL scene would be a boost for the overworked backline.

Last season, after he started as a forward-ruckman -- a role he had played since the club's introduction in 2009 -- Thompson switched to defence and ended up rated by good judges as the club's second best defender behind Nathan Bock.

"It was the night before a reserves game against Redland that Harty (assistant coach Shaun Hart) pulled me aside and asked if I'd have any objections to a run around at centre half-back," Thompson said.

He went on to play eight of the Suns' final nine AFL matches in the key backman's role.

"I didn't see it coming, but I was pretty happy with it," said Thompson.

"In the end my goal is to take over Bocky's spot. I'd like to be number one defensive player here, like a lot of the boys would, I guess."

I wonder if, like Matera, he'll only have one game in the Reserves before being shifted up to the seniors? Probably depends how he goes, but having him in the team would go a long way to helping us out, defence wise. We know he at least makes it a contest on his opponent. ;)

Especially if we are to take on Essendon. Bock, Stanley, Thompson all back in one big swoop. That'd be really nice. Certainly make me feel better about our chances. :D

How much pre-season did he do if he had surgery post-Arizona?

I don't think we should rush him into the Seniors. He was impressive last year, but mostly played on young, inexperienced opponents, while Bock did the hard work on the opposition's best forwards. I don't think he'd have been a huge help against Adelaide in Round 1. I'd like to see him get some fitness & form in the Reserves before bringing him back.

Yeah, that makes sense. I guess with Bock up forward, he'll be relied on a little more with Warnock not being as good. Still servicable of course, but there may be times when Rory needs to take the Key Forward? If only for small moments.

Our backline isn't actually looking too bad at the moment in regards to players missing. It just goes into our own 50 so much! May isn't tracking too badly at all, so there's no rush at the moment.

Still. It'd be nice to have him sit on Kosi this week. :D

Thompson makes NEAFL return from injury.

LOCAL product Rory Thompson is expected to make his overdue return from injury when the Gold Coast Suns tackle Brisbane in a battle for outright leadership on the NEAFL ladder today.

After two setbacks in his comeback from groin issues, Thompson has been given the green light to resume his chase for a place back in the club's AFL side in a clash at Leyshon Park in Brisbane's inner south.

Thompson, a Southport junior, is among six changes to the Suns for a match against co-leaders Brisbane.

Gold Coast lose another defender.

GOLD Coast has lost its third key defender for the season with Rory Thompson scratched following an ankle surgery.

Thompson, 21, injured the ankle against North Melbourne in round 12 and met with a specialist earlier this week when he was delivered the bad news.

The 200cm key defender adds to a horrendous injury list that includes vice-captain Nathan Bock (fractured ankle) and Seb Tape (knee) who will also miss the year.

General manager of football operations Marcus Ashcroft said Thompson sustained a significant amount of ligament damage in his ankle.

"It is extremely disappointing for Rory," Ashcroft said.

"We saw in the second half of last year what he is capable of, and on the back of an injury interrupted start to the season we were hopeful Rory would finish off the season strongly.”

Thompson has played 13 matches for the Suns since making his debut in round 16 last year.

Aside from Thompson, Bock and Tape, Gold Coast's injury list is growing, with deputy vice-captain Michael Rischitelli (hamstring) also ruled out of Saturday's match against West Coast.

Rischitelli has struggled with ankle and hamstring problems in recent weeks and has been given another week to heal.

Fellow midfielders Dion Prestia (hamstring, one week) and David Swallow (knee, three weeks) are also out.

Swallow has not played since round seven against Greater Western Sydney.

In one promising piece of news for the Suns, small defender Jarrod Harbrow will undergo a test to assess his availability after 10 weeks out with a fractured elbow.

Sorry to bump an old thread guys.

I was thinking, while Thompson has shown some great potential down back.. does he have what it takes to become a 10 year solid FB/CHB and permanent backman?
 
Hope so. I always thought that too, 200cm is not small (ruckman territory).

If not, I think we need to draft another natural KPD to go with Schade.

I m a bid fan of Thompson. Reminds me a bit of Dixon in his attack at the ball.

Thompsom & Schade are potentially the natural replacements for Warnock & Bock when they retire.
