Hawks,
There's always something going on or happening in the league at any given point and although we have a 'Australian Rules' board for all things AFL, we thought a general discussion thread on the Hawk board may just give some posters here the opportunity to discuss other clubs, or just general happenings during the off season, and Home and Away periods without having to be concerned with getting into slanging matches with other clubs supporters.

And there's the catch. This is a thread for Hawks fans only, and a sanctuary where we can discuss whatever we please* regarding the AFL and other clubs(within the rules of the board, of course) without having outsiders stepping in to muddy the waters.

*Note: This does not mean that we can use this thread as some sort of haven to post agitating or inflammatory comments about other clubs or it's players.

*** Yes, that's right. If you're not a Hawk, and you feel the need to respond, then prepare to wear a red card. You've been warned. ***

EDIT: Just an update. I don't care if you think it's fair or not that we have a thread for only Hawks to post in.
This board is to cater for Hawks fans, no one else.
So if you post here, you'll be carded. Simple.

Well, on that note let me say this ;)

Pity Essendon did not draft James Hird back as a player instead of as coach. Clearly he is 75% better as a player even now than anyone on there list at the moment or in the future.

Wonderful to see all these puff pieces in the paper to keep scum fans happy - seeing a running and sweaty group of players getting fit from a couple of pro scum writers. What do you think every other AFL club is doing at the moment, sitting around the big table stuffing themselves with Christmas cake!

Good to see James is coaching football straight out of the only coach you ever knew at that is the Kevin Sheedy 1980's coaching manual.

It really is a marketing exercise, hey Rusty? I wonder if the whole Neagle delisting was an exercise in increasing media cred?

Anyway, let's get this thread moving in the direction it should be:

Which are the teams to watch in 2011?

For me, I'm massively interested in Melbourne, North and Freo. Both sides improving in many areas and will either plateau or shoot up the ladder. If they shoot up it'll be at the expense of a team on the decline.

I'm also looking forward to seeing how Geelong, St Kilda and the Bulldogs handle all that has happened, from lost premierships to lost captains and coaches.

And surely, SURELY west coast have to improve at some point in time???

Haha, nothing wrong with a measured comment Rusty. ;)

Fwiw, the current state of play for the ratio of club to media space for the preseason is well in favour of Essendon and Hird.
The expectation that they're building is fantastic, especially considering that they'll enter the season with a very similar and poor list.

Everyone remembers how much hype there was about Richmond and where they'd finish after securing Cousins and coming through the Preseason with plenty of media exposure and predictions of finals and even top 4 finishes......then they turned up Round 1 and got absolutely smacked in front of everyone and it went backwards from there.

I won't be at all surprised if Hird gets a couple of early wins, and then the going starts to get tough.

For me the biggest surprise was that he's kept much the same list, and re-contracted a few players who he should've made a hard call on.

Am keen on peoples thoughts on indigenous footballers.....its ok to judge them on the likes of Rioli,Buddy and Goodes.....but the fact is many of them struggle to cope with the demands of "AFL fOOTY"...(Peterson , Robertson and Hooper )....So i pose this....Do we do enough ? Are some clubs better at dealing with there needs....if so , which clubs...the Bombers seem to do it well...Remember , many of these kids come straight out of the bush...bare footed , uninhibited in so many ways....yet we make demands from day 1 , both with footy and more importantly , life ....
Again , are clubs tolarent enough...??

Hird gives Essendon the Voss/Worsfold problem: who has the juice at the football club to tell the Golden One he is performing poorly? His best mate the president? Ian Robson? Hird is good for 2011 and 12; written off as "development" years.

The list isn't that bad; the midfield lacks class but there is a solid group of KP players to build around. Two of those (Hurley and Ryder) are going to be superstars and they have drafted well recently. The issue is who is going to kick the goals. Neagle is a joke, Williams has two years of his superannuation (sorry, contract) to run and Gumbleton has a kicking style that would make James Manson wince.

They could do worse that play to type and swipe Jack Anthony from the Dockers grasp.

I'll flip it around. Are clubs too tolerant? Is the failure rate higher in general than the overall rate? It's alleged that in Damien Hardwick's unsuccesful interview with Essendon he suggested less of a demarcation in the treatment of indigenous youth at AFL clubs.

I think in time the treatment of indigenous players will become less specialised at clubs as they enter the talent identification system earlier and they are guided from a younger age. Those who get drafted will be better prepared.

Who says things improved when he went to Richmond  ;)

I was going to say that if we look at some of the differences in footy development between indigenous and non indigenous players, we will find the biggest one is the guided care and training exposure from a very young age. How many indigenous kids do you see that have been in a structured AFL program since they were 6 or 7 (ala Auskick/Little League)?

Spot on about the preparation Mess. I assume some of the disciplinary issues we find with indigenous players might have more to do with not being accustomed to a highly structured program, than anything else. There are, of course, always exceptions to the rule.

I was speaking to a guy from Darwin who has a role with all the AFL clubs through a program up there. He said that Hawthorn was the best with Essendon and Carlton was the worst. His son was delisted from Hawks so believe he was presenting a pretty balanced view about Hawthorn.

I'd like to take this opportunity to say how overhyped North Melbourne are. Atley, Harper and Bastinac have all been sliders in the drafts so it's persieved that they have drafted very well. Sure they might become great players but do North Melbourne actually have a forward line yet? Petrie is still in trouble and will have a compromised pre-season. Throw in Anthony, Ziebell, Black and Cunnington in and they have the foundation of a great team. I admit, i'm a little envious of some of these players especially considering some of them came from traded picks from us, but that aside i can't imagine North being any better than a middle of the road side. And when they do have a good side - Gold Coast will be better.

I'm keen to see if Virgin come up with some promos for flights next season exclusive to footy fans and/or footy members. Would love to see them get some serious promos for their flights and try to rein in fans travelling for the footy.

Hmmm....very surprised to hear Essendon will be unveilling Bomber Thomson today. After all the puff peices they've phoned into the media they pick the only day in summer with any official functions on - 2 drafts ffs. Marketing excercise? No way!!!, but expect to read a peice on Ryder training the house down by the end of the month. BTW - it's working too, the Bomber fans a certainly 'believing'.

"Only people spinning more than graeme swann today will be hird bomber and robson. Suggest robbo takes the new ball at windy hill!"

I think that about sums up the feeling from a lot in the media in regards to Bomber and the dons.

GARY Ablett has broken his silence on his strained relationship with former Geelong coach Mark Thompson, revealing that the pair had not had a meaningful conversation since April.

In a forthright interview, Ablett said:

THE pair had a heated argument early in the season over whether Ablett would commit to a new contract with the Cats.

THE two men then did not communicate for the rest of the season, meaning Ablett was essentially coached by the Geelong assistants for five months.

THOMPSON was "a very controlling person" who wanted to oversee other parts of the football club, such as contract negotiations and the medical department.

THOMPSON was being "hypocritical" and deflecting attention from his own departure from Geelong by continuing to draw Ablett into media discussions.

It makes you wonder, and although it doesn't confirm that Gary knew what Bomber was going to do, it certainly paints the picture that his future defection to Essendon was known.
I haven't seen or heard the comments that have brought about this repsonse from Ablett, but it seems like there's a bit of water to go under the bridge.

Certainly the ones who always lose out in these scenarios are those who are left behind. I don't 'feel sorry' for any club (let alone the Baggers), but if that kind of business went down at my club I'd be livid and probably be reaching for the voodoo dolls.

As the snippets of truth slowly spill about the goings-on down at the Cattery this past year, we now begin to understand more and more about how much toxicity is created by ego and $$$.

Now Galon, that is just crazy talk.

Bomber was burnt out and sad.

Hird extended an old mate a helping hand and he just decided all of a sudden and absolutely spontaneously that he might like to return. They absolutely had no idea he was just going to roll up to training.

And Bomber wasn't sad anymore.

Just wonder what the consensus is on the Suns.

Their midfield is going to go alright and their backline is solid, but that forward line is a bit of a black box.

I still think they are good for 6 wins.

I think they will win 8-10 games

I think they will win a flag in three years - the AFL has over compensated (or deliberately set them up to be a powerhouse) and if you look at the picks they took this year and the 17 year olds from the previous year (like Matera and Toy) With 50 games in them they are going to be unstoppable - so we better win a flag in the next year or two as we won't get near after that
