The second week of the Foxtel Cup kicks off this weekend as the curtain raiser before the Fremantle v Geelong AFL match at Pattersons stadium. heres a bit of a glance at the teams, history and so on as a short guide to the match. For the record, the Northern Territory defeated Morningside in Adelaide last weekend (Foxtel ratings of 34,000).

Match: East Perth Royals v North Ballarat Roosters
venue: Pattersons Stadium, Perth, WA (Curtain raiser before Freo v Geelong)
Time: 3pm
Broadcast:
foxsports.png
6pm (delayed)

This match represents the first time the two sides have met in competition. Its also the first match in the competition to feature an AFL aligned VFL club, although East Perth may well have Dockers or Eagles players in the lineup. East Perth finished 3rd in the WAFL last year, qualifying for the Foxtel Cup, North Ballarat finished premiers of the VFL. Both clubs are steeped in the history of their respective states football.

The VFL season has yet to start, while the WAFL season has already begun. This may benefit East Perth somewhat due to match practice.
This match should have a half decent crowd given its actually being played in the home state of one of the teams involved.

Recent Record

North Ballarat - 14 wins, 4 losses, 2010 premiers
East Perth - 11 wins, 9 losses, 2010 preliminary finalist

Introduction to the Teams

East Perth Royals

East Perth was founded in 1902, and are the winners of 17 WAFL premierships, the most recent being in 2002. They are based at Medibank Stadium (Leederville Oval), in Perth, Western Australia. East Perth were the first clun outside Victoria to approach the VFL about joining the league in 1980. Their traditional rivals are West Perth.

AFL listed players on the East Perth roster include Zac Clarke (Fremantle), Hamish Shepheard (Frem), Luke Shuey (WCE), Dylan Roberton (Frem), Jarrad Oakleigh Nicholls (WCE), Dean Cox (WCE), Adam Selwood (WCE). Although its highly unlikely that the last two will be available.

Famous AFL players from East Perth include Graham Farmer (Geelong), Syd Jackson (Carltn), Ross Glendenning (WCE), Ryan Turnball (WCE), Ron Alexander (Fitzroy), John Watts (Geelong), Phil Kelly (nth Melbourne)

North Ballarat Roosters

North Ballarat was formed in 1882, and played predominately in the Ballarat Football League, which for a long time was the equivelant of its VFL/VFA counterparts. North Ballarat are presently aligned with the North Melbourne AFL club. In total, they've won 19 premierships, including the last 3 VFL premierships. In 2010, they defeated the Northern Bullants to win the VFL flag for the year. They are based at the Northern oval in Ballarat.

Due to the fluid nature of the alignment, AFL listed players may change pending North Melbourne requirements. Players may also play for the Werribee Tigers.

North Ballarat has produced some notable AFL players, including Adam Goodes (Sydney), Micheal Malthouse (Richmond), Tony Lockett (StK/Sydney), and Darren Jolly (Sydney/Collingwood).

Prediction:
Without knowing Ballarats lineup its hard to tell, I expect this to be a close match however, but North have been very dominant lately so Ill be going for them in a photo finish.

Please feel free to add anything i may have left out. I didnt think anyone else would bother, and I genuinely wanted to know more about these teams so I found it interesting at least. lol.

Nice write-up once again Wookie :thumbsu:

East Perth knocked off reigning premiers Swan Districts in the first round of the WAFL so I would have them as just favourites on their home turf. Polak and Pettifer may have been fairly average AFL players but even though it's early days they appear to have been great additions to the Royals' forward line.

Appreciate the previews myself - here's some corrections -

East Perth was formed in 1902 as "Union Football Club" and played in the 3rd and then 1st rate association until 1906 when they entered the WAFL and changed to "East Perth".

Jarrod Oakley Nichols has been injured since pre-season so he also won't be avail.

Former AFL players in the squad are Garry Moss, Josh Smith, Kayne Pettifer and Graham Polak.

I read an article on North Ballarat that suggests they're quite injury depleted so might not be the greatest side they're sending over.

I'm a little vague on what kind of side East Perth will put together. The club is evidently "excited" to be participating in this but I keep hearing that a number of key players may be rested this week. Will have to wait and see.

It will be interesting if Ben Mckinley plays for North Ballarat. He played for East Perth quite regularly during his time with the Eagles and was quite fond of the club.

A quick analysis suggests NB may be understrength. On the otherhand EP have a strong lineup on paper and are only missing 2 key players from last week in captain Michael Swan and Pettifer.

Beeck (#1 ruck), interchange, has his first game of the season if he does front up. Not sure how confident the club is in his fitness but he'd be playing next week if not this week.

Hopefully EP are up for this one after a bit of a lacklustre effort last week. Brookes makes his "senior" debut if he does get the nod.

homefield advantage isn't that applicable.

WAFL games aren't played at Patersons.
Heat, fatigue, training routines disrupted for North Ballarat

It doesn't have to be just the bloody oval shape that makes a difference
There are numerous factors.

West Coast still won at WACA thanks to the travel factor back in the 90s, even though you didn't really play there, ad are used to Subiaco.

So havent seen the match yet, will watch it tomorrow. Good to see a close result though.

.. next round East Perth take on the NT Thunder. Venue TBA.

thunder convinced they'll be playing at home on May 28 as a curtain raiser to Richmond v Port.

Home ground advantage is going to be huge in this comp. Ordinarily i'd expect East Perth to flog NT by 15 goals, but up there you never know.

As far as this game goes, I caught the 2nd half live - and NB looked a lot more silky but were nowhere near as quick. About 10 minutes into the final quarter they completely stopped, and the rest of the game was played inside East Perth's forward 50.
In Melbourne NB would have won by 6 goals mininum IMO.

Also noticed how excited the players were to win - was like a final for them. Which is really great to see.

This puts East Perth in a strong position to win the comp.

Will be interesting.

Claremont are a superior side to East Perth and shouldn't have any problems with Clarence.

If Swan Districts can beat Williamstown this weekend which is no given than the WAFL would be in a good chance to win.

Thought it might have done slightly better with a VFL side playing.
Will be interesting to see if the ratings pick up towards the end of the comp.
North Ballarat as a North Melbourne affiliate wouldn't have the following of other VFL clubs who are affiliated to big AFL clubs. Interesting to see the ratings when the Bullants (Carlton) play.

If the Foxtel Cup survives and more and more Vic-based AFL clubs go it alone so the VFL becomes mainly a AFL ressies comp. then that should boost ratings for the Foxtel Cup in time. It's no coincidence that the VFL affiliates of the bigger Vic AFL clubs get more games on the ABC coverage.
