I've found it hard to find a single app worth installing let alone paying for first.

Dragon Dictation.... you talk and it types your message, usually pretty accurate, in a quiet place, sure beats typing.

Foxtel.... You can use the app to record shows on your iQ at anytime from anywhere

Metlink.... Great having all Public Transport timetables with you, also you can have your favourite stops so you can see how long until the next train for example.

Agree - this is a must-have app. Music and talk radio from around the world at your fingertips - in fact the choices are overwhelming! During the footie season I record one of the commentaries for each Hawks game and then listen to this during my daily commutes - sure makes the commute go faster (but only if we win!). Unfortunately you cannot export the recordings, but I keep them till I run out of space!

Other apps I love:

Metroview - GPS for Australia. Think it was about $15 - much cheaper than TomTom. Also has Walking feature - which I love - now no excuse for getting lost.

TripView - essential for Sydneysiders that use public transport

Woolworths - setup your shopping lists, nominate your store and it tells you which aisles goods are located. Bar-code scanning makes it so simple. Has cut my shopping time by heaps.

Optus - if you are on an Optus plan - setup your account online and then use this app to monitor your usage.

MelAir - Melbourne Airport. I fly to Melbourne at least 3-5 times a year to get my footie fix. This is a great app giving departure/arrival times, delays, terminal locations and so on.

Restaurants - I use Urbanspoon (free) and GFG SMH ($$).

So many other great apps, particularly if you enjoy audio-books, exercise (lots of great 'running' apps and pedometers), cooking and so-on.

Optus - if you are on an Optus plan - setup your account online and then use this app to monitor your usage.

Just a side note to this. I found the Optus app to be very slow and pretty Average.

Grab "Consume" instead. Loads faster, plus you can add anything you like (Multiple Mobiles, Internet useage etc)

Action Movie is one of the best apps going around, you can blow up anything.

Crackle is another great app, it has free movies and TV shows to watch. Been watching Seinfeld on my iPad and it has a stack of movies and other shows worth watching.

Loads quicker and can also tell you where branches/ATM's are in relation to your current position. Also optimised and shizz though admittedly most websites that have an app also have the website itself in the same manner/layout as the app for the most part.
