Match Overview

Carlton will enter this game after a very poor match against St Kilda on Monday Night at Etihad with a number of injury concerns over several players, and continuing doubt over the playing of 3 ruckmen, as well as the likely suspension of Eddie Betts. Carlton will regain Jarrad Waite from suspension, and likely Bryce Gibbs from injury, but may be missing other key players.

Port Adelaide have started the season strongly but lost their winning ways over the past fornight, including losing to Richmond at home despite being hot favorites.

Key Matchups - Notwithstanding the St Kilda result -
stats not updated for st kilda game yet.
  • Backline - Jamison and Henderson are in some of the best form of their playing lives, and ably backed up this season by Touhy, White and the ever watchful Scotland. Last, but definitely not least, is Andrew Walker who is in scintillating form, plays tall, and fast. They will trouble Ports forwards, and I expect them to be more than capable of handling anything Ports offensive lineup can dish up.
  • Defensive scoring against - Carlton 550 (3rd), Port Adelaide 593 (7th)
  • Rebound 50s - Port 245 (11th), Carlton 242 (13th)
  • Midfield - Murphy has begun to find his feet as Captain, and will be more than happy to see Bryce Gibbs back in the side, alongside a fleet of quick runners in Armfield, Simpson, as well as the Kamikaze kid in Robinson. These are more than ably assisted by the even faster run provided by Betts, Garlett and Yarran as they stream forward.Ports runners have excelled at tackling and contested possession, and on raw stats are a better clearance side. This could prove dangerous for the Blues as Carltons mids are not known for their defensive capacities.
  • Contested possessions: Port 956 (12th), Carlton 922 (13th)
  • Clearances: Port 247 (9th), Carlton 219 (16th)
  • Disposal efficency: Port 71.4% (7th), Carlton 70.9% (8th)
  • 1%ers: Carlton 287 (10th), Port 278 (12th)
  • Tackles: Port 429 (7th), Carlton 372 (13th)
  • Forwards - Carlton possesses one thing in spades that no team this season has really had an answer for, a stable of lightning fast, and highly skilled small forwards eagerly awaiting the inevitable crumbs that fall their way from big Hampson. With the ever dangerous judd and murphy always lurking, any ball that hits the ground in the forward 50 is a likely goal. Waite adds marking power to the forward line, and if Hampson remains in decent touch, then even the Blues much maligned forward line will be a handful for Ports defenders. If Hampson fails to impress or the three ruckmen simply dont gel properly, Levi Casboult waits in the wings, having gotten into some good touch for the Blues VFL partner
  • Points scored: 729 (7th), Carlton 629 (11th)
  • Marks inside 50: Port 92 (4th), Carlton 70 (12th)
  • Goals: Port 105 (7th), Carlton 91 (11th)
  • Goal Accuracy: Port 50.5% (9th), Carlton 49.7% (13th)
  • Rucks - say what you like about the Blues, they arent short in this area. Depending on the saints game, it would seem a possibility that the Blues will try to play Warnock and Kreuzer in the ruck/on ball roles, with Hampson staying deep forward, but still a more than capable ruckman in his own right. Warnock is presently in a rich vein of form and will spell trouble for Ports big men.
  • Hitouts - Carlton 238 (11th), Port 232 (14th)
Summary

Statistics lean Ports way, but its worth pointing out that until last week they'd played very few teams in the top 10 sides. Port faced a hapless Melbourne in R1, the fledgeling GWS in R2, a 2013 underperforming Adelaide in R3, Gold Coast in R4, and an underwhelming West Coast (that admittedly put on a good match). Not Ports fault you can only play who are rostered to, and at the end of last year, Adelaide and West Coast would and should have been tough matches.

Carltons first three rounds were something of a contrast, narrowly losing to Ridhmond, Collingwood and Geelong in succession without being disgraced. The next three matches against Adelaide, West Coast and Melbourne were all wins (as Port fans will note).

For Carlton, the Blues gameplan appeared to be beginning to come together until the Saints game. A solid backline is gaining traction and theres speed EVERYWHERE and enough top grade ruckmen to gladden the eye of a man who endured a perennial shortage of them at Collingwood. Injuries and suspensions arising from Mondays game will have altered the perception somewhat.

The match looms as a close one, with both sides keen to get back into the winners circle. The Blues to win a close one, in a good match as Port strive not to lose three in a row. Carlton by 21 points.

These are the changes for mine. Agree with the IN's posted by BLUES crusade.

IN: Waite, Bell, Watson, Buckley, Menzel
OUT: Hampson, Ellard, Jamison, Yarran, Simpson

I know many will want to punt out Lucas but Simpson & Robinson are coasting at the moment and need a rocket big time! Much rather see MM make a statement & put them on notice by dropping either Simpson or Robinson, than punt a kid after a handful of games. I know tonight we were hurt by the early injuries but we were very ordinary and need to address it urgently! Robinson just gets the nod because of his tackling work but neither should be automatic at this point!

Hampson, while he wasn't alone tonight as far as being pathetic (Kreuzer), he just can't be played as a forward who backs up in the ruck because his influence was near non existent tonight. As far as I am concerned he is clearly No.3 in the pecking order and should only play if Warnock is unavailable.

Ellard, Yarran & Jamison all to miss through injury, major respect to Jamison for battling on with that dodgy shoulder on what has to be the hardest match up in the game! Why we played Yarran is beyond me, the bloke has a history of hamstring injuries and obviously a serious issue last week, yet we roll the dice on him and it backfired!

If we play like we did for the first 3 quarters again next week against Port, we will get rolled & we will be pushing **** up hill big time coming from 3-5!

EDIT - Forgot about Carrazzo & Gibbs. Provided they are fit, change them for Buckley & Menzel

For next week I would be looking at the following changes:

In: Bell, Waite, Gibbs, Carrazzo/Buckley
Out: Ellard (inj), Yarran (inj), Jamison (inj), Kreuzer (rest, he is clearly not ready yet).

I would hold off a bit longer before giving Menzel a run in the seniors & put the acid on Laidler to really knock the door down, because at the moment, despite what we saw tonight, White still offers more.

Out: Yarran (hamstring), Ellard (hamstring), Jamison (shoulder) Betts (suspended), Kruezer (thumb/omit).

I'm loathe to make more than 5 changes, but you could drop any of Simpson/Curnow/Lucas

In: Gibbs, Waite, Carrazzo (hopefully), Watson, Bell/Buckley/Menzel

In Waite Gibbs Carazzo Watson

Out Ellard Yarran Hampson Jamison

Kreuzer needs another run not sure if in VFL or in the AFL but he def didnt look right

If Bell doesn't get selected this week I'm going to go a little nuts.
Might even go hire a d8, float it to Visy, drive it through the main gate mid training session, watch Robinson run Kamikaze style into the side of it while Bell stands still and battles head on with it. Belldozer vs Bulldozer.

If we play like we did today, considering how Port are playing, fourth quarter is going to be intense. But I expect the reaming the squad will get this week will push them to play to their potential. Tip this to be our best game for this year so far.

They will fancy their chances and who can blame them?

And at that graveyard of a ground.

Going to bed.

I don't believe our year will recover from what happened tonight. Expect an improved Port to go with us all the way.

Given injuries/form/attitude/suspensions we might as well check out Menzel and Mitchell. Our forward line is beyond embarrassing.

If Port was playing at Aami maybe, but the games at Etihad, id say we have a small advantage. And i agree on Mitchell. Take the punt ffs.

FB: Z. Touhy || M. Jamison || S. White

Pending Jamison, Yarran, betts all being cleared to play

I think

IN: Watson, Carrots, Waite, Gibbs
OUT: Ellard (inj) Hampson (omit) Cachia (omit) (Curnow/Lucas)

Regardless of VFL form would love to see Watson in.
Give him a month to cement his spot, then will have a good idea of where he is at long term.
If he can free up Henderson to play forward majority of time - forward line is much more potent.
(Hendo to play back this week with Jamison out).
Betts should get 2-3 you'd think - hopefully get to see what Menzel can do, would be a good sub option.
Hopefully Laidler gets it together soon, significant improvement on White if recaptures his 2011 form.

Can only play 2-3 of Bell, Robinson, Cachia, McLean, Ellard, Curnow in the same team at the one time.
Can't carry all of them due to pace, skill and decision making errors.

Play Murphy on Boak for the 1st quarter - make him lead by example by sacrificing his own game by tackling, one percenters etc.
Gibbs head to head with Hartlett(destroyed us last time).
They also a number of good small forwards who can be dangerous, wouldn't be surprised to see Joseph(collective groan) come in and play a role.

Well Malthouse has to make up for Yarran/Jamison(?) Kreuzer(?) Murphy(?) Carrazzo(?) and maybe Betts out. He also has to cover for his love child interests like Hampson as a forward and Lucas as anything - seriously don't get the love for Lucas on this forum. Then he has to cover for out of form players like Simpson and Robinson.

Waite goes in and hopefully Gibbs as well - either of which would have probably made the difference against the Saints.

Malthouse can start earning his money now - will be fascinating to see what he comes up with....

Let's wait for the medicals/ match review but it could look something like:

Out Betts(susp?) Yarran(hammy) Jamison (shoulder) Ellard(calf) Kreuzer(thumb)
In Carrazzo, Gibbs, Watson, Duigan, Waite

Duigan, you ask? Yes, we needed his white-line fever tonight to rotate on Siposs/Milne/Milera/Saad

I don't want to see Kreuzer out there again until it's 100% healed... That and Shaun has a super-hot GF! :)

Joseph, Casboult, Bell in the Sunday squad.

We have way better options than Duigan to come in.

Yarran and Ellard definite outs. Obvious ins if right Gibbs and Carrazzo.
Bell has been thumping and kicking on the door for weeks, cannot be denied.
Lucas, Simpson and Robbo down. Effort and accountability IMO suggest Lucas
is the omission. He has assumed Simmo's role this season, while Kade has had
difficulty getting involved to his historic levels. Release him and judge the results.
Praying for the warrior Jammo to come up. Regardless of Jammo in or out, Watson
needs to be in the team. White has so many comparisons with Duigan, both good average
players who enhance their output through endeavour and "smarts". We will not be competitive
in September with either in the 22, though hard not to "love" them.
If Eddie gets a holiday, enter Menzel X-factor. Good reports re Casboult, and Mitchell "building".
No room for them when Waite comes back, and Watson essential addition to cover Jammo and/or release Hendo. Kreuzer cannot play in same team as Warnock, and does not give enough forward, on current form 206 has the gig. Joseph close, but Cachia has done his job OK. Only other in the mix is Laidler for mine.

OUT: Yarran, Ellard, Lucas, Kreuzer, (Jamison?/White), (Betts?)
IN: Gibbs, Carrazzo, Bell, Waite, Watson, (Menzel)

Not the ideal game to bring Watto in with Westhoff and Schulz among the more athletic tall forwards going around, but it is time to "blood" him for an extended period.
