Other Melbourne 2014 - A new chapter

5kon7r.jpg

Both these sides will be looking to kick off their 2014 AFL season with a win at the MCG on Sunday afternoon. West Coast travel the border and come up against a new look Melbourne outfit ready to make amends for it's horrible 5 year patch. With a new senior coach at the helm and so new faces into the squad, Melbourne are looking a little more polished after some good performances in the NAB cup. Be more competitive for 4 quarters is the main message from Hayden Sumner as the Eagles will look to put a horror 2013 behind them with key players back into the side.

Eagles hold their nerve against fast finishing Demons

___________________________________________________________________

A DEFIANT West Coast side has held off against a fast finishing Melbourne side to win their Round 1 battle at the MCG 14.8.92 to 13.10.88.
In what many believed would be an easy victory to the Eagles, Melbourne came out and surprised many as Hayden Sumner's men kicked 5 goals to 3 in the last quarter to only loose the match by 4 points.

The match started slowly with both sides only kicking a single goal each in the first quarter when it was the Demons who kicked away and led at half time much to the shock of the 39,798 who turned up in what is a great number for a Demons home game.

Hard Melbourne midfielder Jack Viney was busy early gathering a high 11 possessions in the first quarter whilst Jake Spencer was able to hold his own in the ruck battle against the AFL's biggest ruck duo in Dean Cox and Nic Naitanui.
Chris Dawes was on song early as he was able to put the Demons ahead with his 2nd goal in the 2nd quarter.
Melbourne coach Hayden Sumner said his players showed real resilience when the game was on the line. "It was great to see the boys get so close to winning that match when no one gave them a chance. We just need to execute those close finishes into a win and get some believe into the playing group again. But with a first up result like that after speaking with the boys a little earlier they are proud of their efforts but clearly disappointed as well knowing they could of snatched victory".

West Coast looked shaken in the first half and shadowed their former selves. But clicked in the second half when new boom recruit ex Demon Mitch Clark was able to slot 4 goals against his old club combining with Josh Kennedy to kick 8 between them. Sharrod Wellingham had his best game as an Eagle picking up 36 possessions while Sam Butler was able to spend more time in the midfield and racked up 28 to his name the best of his career.

For the Demons it was the big man Chris Dawes who finished with 4 goals whilst new recruit Jared Petrenko looked dangerous roaming the forward line and crumbing kicking 3 goals in his first match as a Demon. Jack Viney was Melbourne's best with 30 touches while Rory Taggert was able to find plenty of the ball along with ex captain Jack Trengove who picked up 25 touches himself.
With a round 1 result going the way of the Eagles, many who watched the game today saw a glimpse of what the Melbourne football club has to offer in 2014 and how much it has improved in the space of 6 months under new coach Hayden Sumner. It was a great tussle at the MCG, and being in a winning position they truly know that, that game slipped out of their hands.

Toumpas free to play against Sydney

MELBOURNE midfielder Jimmy Toumpas has been sanctioned by the match review panel this evening with a level 1 offence for making forceful contact with an AFL umpire in the Demons round 1 clash with West Coast at the MCG on Sunday afternoon.
The 19 year old can accept a $1500 fine for match contact with umpire Meridith early in the 3rd quarter.

Toumpas has been cleared to play against the Sydney Swans this weekend and after a great first up showing from the Demons against the Eagles, Toumpas and his men are looking forward to the challenge against one of the premier sides in the competition in Sydney.

"Sydney have been one of the bench marks of the competition over a number of years alongside Hawthorn and Geelong, so it'll be a good battle to see where we are as a group and how much we've been able to improve over the pre season. We just fell short against the Eagles last weekend, but the bigger test will be against the Swans this weekend".

We head to the Sydney Cricket ground on Sunday with the highly fancied Sydney Swans taking on a gallant Melbourne side who lost to the West Coast Eagles by 4 points last weekend at the MCG. Fresh new faces for the Demons and a fresh new coach has made a world of difference in the past 6 months, but it's time for the young Demons side to come up against one of the premiership favorites in Sydney.

Sydney have been one of the bench mark sides in recent years and 2014 looks to be no different after their round 1 smashing of the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba last Saturday.
Kurt Tippett has been in great form, while their midfield is one of the best in the league with Hannebery, Jack, Kennedy and McVeigh all finding plenty of the ball in game 1.

Melbourne on the other hand have matured a lot over the summer. Competitive is a word used by coach Hayden Sumner in which he wants his club to remember to stick by throughout the season. In game 1 against the Eagles the Demons were more then competitive with at the final siren they had a chance to win the game going down by 4 points.

Melbourne have made 3 changes to the side that lost to the Eagles last weekend with Max Gawn coming back from injury replacing Jake Spencer in the ruck. Jordie McKenzie and Dean Terlich who both were best for Casey on the weekend come back into the side for their first run in 2014 whist Brodie Martin and Danny Butcher have both been omitted for quieter games last week.

Swans are a goodes thing in 2014
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________

ADAM Goodes has steered Sydney to a 2nd straight win at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday afternoon with a dominant display from the 32 year old as the champ kicked 6 goals for his side which ran out 30 point winners winning 19.8.122 to 14.8.92
Goodes and his Sydney team mates wound back to the clock to record their 2nd win of 2014 whilst the Demons although gallant and competitive, now stare down a 0-2 start.

Sydney kicked away early and never looked like stopping as the Demons played catch up footy right from the opening bounce. Sydney kicked the first 4 goals of the match until the Demons steadied with one of their own to Jeremy Howe.
A 10 goal to 3 opening half told the story for the remainder of the day as the Swans piled on another 6 goals in the third quarter to make the impossible for Melbourne. Although to the Demons credit they kept the Swans to 3 goals in the last quarter and was able to kick 8 goals themselves to finish the match out well, but after starting so far behind, fell short by 30 points.

5 Sydney players registered 30+ possessions for the game whilst only 1 Melbourne player (David Rodan) was able to find plenty of the ball with 32, 10 more then any of his team mates. Josh Kennedy (36), Craig Bird (34), Ryan OKeefe (31) and Jared McVeigh (30) all showed class and reminded us that they are one of the best midfield's in the competition.
Along with his 6 goal performance, Goodes was able to pick up 23 possessions a 6 marks to probably go along with his 3 Brownlow votes.

David Rodan tried hard picking up 32 touches and kicking a goal, while ruckman Max Gawn came back into the side and provided plenty with 22 possessions, 18 hitouts and kicked a goal. After the loss of Mark Jamar, Gawn has relished in the position as number 1 ruck.
Luke Shuey was good for the Demons with 21 possessions and 5 tackles, whilst up front Jesse Hogan and Jared Petrenko managed multiple goals with both players kicking 2 for the match. 10 extra individual goal kickers for the Demons just wasn't enough in another encouraging display for this young Demons side.

"We gave up a bit of a head start to the Swans in the first quarter. We played catch up football for most of the game and the players spent all their tickets trying to get back into the contest. The signs are there, players are working hard and being competitive for longer in games, but we just need to nullify their attack on the ball as the Swans countered pretty quickly and easily against our defense, something we'll need to work on in the coming weeks, but things are slowly adjusting and players are adjusting to our game plan.
So when you asked me 6 months ago that we'd loose to the Swans by 30 points, I would've taken it, considering what's happened in the past and what these players have been through".

Heading into the round 3 of the AFL premiership season with the Melbourne Demons taking on the Saints at the MCG on Saturday afternoon. With a promising start to the year for the Demons going down to the Eagles by 4 points and Swans by 30 points, they come up against a St.Kilda side who is sitting in 9th position with 1-1 for the year. St.Kilda has many stars still playing and in the twilight of their careers. Koschitzke, Milne, Blake and Hayes will lead the Saints against the Demons and are tipped to win this one.

Melbourne's defense has a major blow with key defender James Frawley being ruled out of the match with a hamstring injury. Frawley pulled up a little short after the game against the Swans and he'll miss this week against the Saints which is a big blow going up against one of the best players in the competition Nick Riewoldt. Colin Garland will have to have the job on the gun Saint with the absence of Frawley. Young midfielder Brodie Martin has been recalled to the side after his stint in the VFL in which he picked up 26 possessions and kicked 3 goals for Casey. Martin has been named as sub whilst Sam Blease who wore the vest in the first 2 games, gets a run being named on the interchange bench.

Saint Nick at his best against the Demons
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

CHAMPION forward Nick Riewoldt has led St.Kilda to a 2-1 start to the season, kicking six goals to spearhead St.Kilda's 21 point win over the Melbourne Demons at the MCG on Saturday.
In front of a healthy crowd of 36,000 people it was another gallant defeat from the Demons side who has started the season off with a 0-3 record, but have been much more competitive in each match they've played.

Melbourne led at the main change but the Saints kicked 11 goals in the second half while the Demons managed 6. Riewoldt who finished with 23 possessions and 6 goals was best on ground after a stellar start to the season, while Beau Maister (3) and Sean Dempster (3) hit the scoreboard for the Saints.

Melbourne fans got a glimpse of their future on show at the MCG today with young forward Jesse Hogan finished with a career high 5 goals along with his 12 touches and the kid is growing in stature with every game he plays.
" Hoegs was great for us today. The kid oozes confidence, Himself and Chris Dawes forge a great duo in attack. Hogan finished with 5 goals from 7 attempts, while Dawes managed 3 goals, but played a lot more up the ground then in previous matches helping out Gawn in the ruck". Melbourne coach Hayden Sumner said.

Nathan Jones continued his impressive start to the season picking up 31 touches as did veteran David Rodan. But it was again the Demons younger players who really impressed. Jack Viney (25, 4 clearances), Rory Raggert (24, 7 clearances, 9 inside 50's) and Jimmy Toumpas (23 and 3 rebounds) were all outstanding for the Demons. Sam Blease was also very good after getting his first full match of the year picking up 22 touches and laying 6 tackles.

But it was the Saints who got over the line this afternoon with Riewoldt being too much for the Melbourne defense. Hayes and Montagna finished with 69 touches between them while Jack Steven was excellent with 24 possessions and 7 inside 50's.

This now takes the Saints to 2-1 and looking at playing in September maybe one more time before the likes of Hayes, Schneider, Koschitzke and Milne retire.
Whilst the Demons slip to 0-3 to start the year but in each match their have been impressive signs and you can see that the club is heading in the right direction.

Carlton hosts the Demons in Round 4 of the AFL Premiership Season at the MCG this Saturday afternoon. Both these sides are on the complete opposite sides of the ladder with the Blues winning their opening 3 matches and sit 2nd on the table, whilst although competitive, Melbourne have lost their opening 3 games and sit down the bottom of the table.

Carlton have started 2014 in great fashion with wins over Port Adelaide, Fremantle and Brisbane and now face the Demons who have lost to West Coast, Sydney and St.Kilda
This should be a no contest between the two sides, although Melbourne have done incredibly well to be competitive in each of their 3 matches thus far.
This will be a great test to see how far the Demons have come and how far off they are against the competitions best.

Carlton have made only the one change for the match against the Dees with ruckman Shaun Hampson coming back into the side whilst Robbie Warnock has been down on form and been omitted from the side that won against the Lions last weekend.

Melbourne have made a couple of changes as well, with James Frawley coming back from his week off with injury whilst youngster Trent McKenzie gets his first hitout for his new side coming in for Dean Terlich and Brodie Martin who have both been omitted from the team. Melbourne coach Hayden Sumner has mentioned he will shuffle the side around this week against the Blues and has named James Frawley in the forward 50 in the team sheets.

A blue day for the young Demons
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

CARLTON has recorded it's 4th win from 4 starts to kick start the 2014 season with a 37 point win against the Melbourne Demons at the MCG on Saturday afternoon. Mick Malthouse's Blues now sit a top of the AFL ladder with not loosing a game thus far.

A huge crowd turned up to the traditional Saturday afternoon footy at the G, and the 60,970 who turned up seen what was a game of 2 stories. Carlton who are playing wonderful football now sit on top of the table, whilst Melbourne fans should come away from the game proud of the competitiveness their side has given in the first month of football. Not often you kick 15 goals and still loose a game, but the Demons are getting better and more competitive each week.

"Yeah we are. The side we have out on the park has been competitive in the first 4 games of the year and they are getting better with each week they play together. We are kicking some big scores but we are also leaking a lot of big scores so we need to start working on our defensive structures to try and stop those big scores being scored on our behalf. That's something that you work on during the week and something that will take time once we implement it into the game plan" Melbourne coach Hayden Sumner said.

This time it was against a Blues side who spread around their contribution from all 22 players. The Blues had 3 players who kicked 3 goals with Hampson, Waite and Betts kicking 3 for the home side, whilst Sam Rowe and Andrew Carrazzo kicked the other multiples. Carlton also had winners all over the ground with Chris Judd leading the way for the Blues with 32 possessions and 9 tackles. Brock McLean played a great game through the middle with 32 touches and Bryce Gibbs came back into form finding 31 possessions.

For the Demons it was the form of the youngster Jesse Hogan which was another highlight with the second week in a row. The 18 year old finished with 10 possessions and kicked 4 goals which takes his season tally to 12 in the first 4 matches of the season. The only downside to the youngsters game is he had 9 shots on goal but only kicked the 4 goals kicking 5 behinds as well, which could of been the difference had he converted some of those set shots. Max Gawn drifted forward and kicked 3 goals along with his 15 possessions and 13 hitouts while Chris Dawes also kicked 2 for the game taking his total to 10 for the year.

Speedster Sam Blease played his best game for the Demons finishing with 36 possessions with the best for both sides on the ground, whilst new captain Nathan VanBerlo finished with 29 possessions and 8 tackles. Rory Taggert and Jack Viney were also prolific through the midfield as signs look good for some of the Demons youngsters.

After 4 rounds, Carlton as mentioned above sit on top of the AFL table with 4-0 start whilst the Demons now linger in 15th position being 1 of 3 winless teams along with the Gold Coast and North Melbourne.
In injury news, young Blue Troy Menzel has been confirmed to miss the remainder of the season after tearing his ACL in the match against the Demons on Saturday, Menzel came off worst in a marking contest against Trent McKenzie where his left knee buckled and the worst news has come from it, and will have a traditional knee reconstruction and will be up and rearing to go in 2015. We wish the young man a healthy rehabilitation.

Chris Dawes signs on for 3 years
______________________________________________________________________________________________________

MELBOURNE forward Chris Dawes has today put pen to paper with the star forward signing with the Demons until 2017 after signing a 3 year deal. The power forward who has started 2014 in great fashion has felt right at home with the red and blue since crossing from the Magpies in 2012 and with the emergence of young forward Jesse Hogan, he and Dawes are looking to build a dominant force for the Dees in the near future.

Kicking 10 goals in 4 games to start 2014, Dawes who stands at 193cm couldn't be happier at his new club as said he's excited to sign for long term. "Yeah it's a relief really. You want to get the contract stuff out of the way, that way you can't have it hanging over your head all year and sometimes it takes the focus away from playing football. 3 years is enough time to develop my own game and I see this club improving a hell of a lot in those 3 years that I've signed for. I'm 24 now, so I would like to say after my 3 year contract is up I could sign another and finish my career with the Demons. I've loved the club since I came across and I think that myself a Hoges can team up and provide a target up forward for the side going forward".

Melbourne coach Hayden Sumner had this to say earlier today.. "It's always good to get one of your key players to sign a contract and to have faith in the footy club whilst we are going through a transition of change. Dawes has come across from the Pies and hasn't really had too much heartache that some of these boys have over the last couple of years, but he'll be a big part of the future here and we are pleased he has signed on. After loosing Mitch Clark at the end of last year, it's good to see the signature of one of your key position players, and now we can just wait and see if Hogan (who is out of contract at the end of the year) signs on as well. They'll make a dominant pair in the future and we are already seeing the dominance both these boys will have early this season. Hogan sits ahead in our goal kicking with 12 while Dawesey is next best with 10. So that's 22 goals in 4 goals just from the 2 of them, so look out in a couple of years once Hogan has developed and they spend more time together".

Demons fans should get used to seeing this man for the next 3 years after signing a new contract today

A huge game coming up for these 2 teams at the MCG on Saturday afternoon as Melbourne hosts the Port Adelaide Football club, with both teams winless so far in the first five rounds in 2014.
One of these teams will taste their first win for the year, whilst the other team will fall further behind the pecking order and could be favorites to win the wooden spoon from this contest.

Melbourne come into this game after some very competitive matches against quality sides, while the Power have been the biggest disappointment so far. Rookie coach Hayden Sumner has swung the axe on match selection this week and we caught up with him earlier today.

"Yeah mate a few changes this week after our efforts last week. Young Peter Loscar has been given a rest after the 19 year old played the first four games of the year. We are just managing his work load and we don't expect any of our new players to play all 24 games of the year so he'll miss this week. Jordie McKenzie was a little unlucky I guess after starting last weekend as the sub, but he just didn't do enough when given the opportunity to he'll go back to Casey to find some form to warrant a 22 selection and Jimmy Toumpas who has been ok for the club so far this year, just hasn't set the world on fire like he was in the pre-season so he'll go back to the VFL just to start to find some touch again and just to enjoy his football a bit more, again he is one of those younger players we need to manage throughout the year.

We've bought in Andrew Dore who was our 23rd selection in last years national draft, so he'll play his debut and we're excited to see what the midfielder can do. We've also named Danny Butcher who kicked 4 in the VFL last weekend from 22 possessions as well as Rohan Bail who amassed 36 touches in Casey's win over Port Melbourne. So we've bought in players who are in form and giving them a chance at the big time.

Demons turn off the Power
______________________________________________________________________________________________

MELBOURNE can finally celebrate after a hard fought 12 point win against the Power at the MCG on Saturday afternoon. The Demons have won their first match of 2014 and first match under new coach Hayden Sumner, winning 16.10.106 to 14.10.94
The Melbourne faithful celebrated with vigour on the final siren while Port Adelaide supporters headed to the players' race to vent their frustration. On a glorious day for the Demons, who won their first match since round 14 last season, the Power plunged to new depths and remain winless after five games for the first time.

The first quarter was set out with hard attack on the ball from both sides, as both sides wanted to come out and stamp their mark on the game. Only one goal separated the sides at quarter time.
A different story into the second term with the Demons kicking into another gear and youngster Jesse Hogan got into the thick of the action. Within the space of 8 minutes into the second quarter, Hogan had kicked his 3rd of the term, and the Power were in panic mode. Alipate Carlile was struggling to put body on the man mountain and the Demons midfield could see the dominance and kicked to Hogan at every opportunity.

4.2 to 2.3 in the second quarter saw the Demons extend their lead by 17 points at the main break and Hayden Sumner's men had one foot on the throat of the Power. We always knew that the Power were going to respond in some way at half time and Ken Hinkley's men responded in a way that many didn't expect at the ground. The Power came out firing after the break banging on 6 quick goals which got the Power crowd get into the game. A big term from the Power saw them kick 6.1 to 4.3 which saw the Demons lead cut back to 7 points heading into the last quarter.

33, 392 fans at the MCG on Saturday afternoon were in for a thrilling last quarter with the Demons leading by 7 points going into the last quarter. The fans weren't disappointed, it was a see sawing affair and a very aggressive last quarter with both teams giving it their all for their first win of the year, but it was the Demons who finished the game off with a 5.3 last quarter to eventually run away with a 12 point victory.

Port Adelaide would be kicking themselves after winning all the major stats and still loosing on the scoreboard. The Power had 152 more disposals then there opposition, 14 more tackles, 14 more inside 50's and still lost the game by 2 goals.

Melbourne had many contributors over the ground with Sam Blease again being named best on ground with another 34 possession game and laying a game high 9 tackles. Nathan Jones as always was instrumental through the midfield with 34 touches himself and producing a huge 11 inside 50's being the general in Melbourne's attacking game. Jack Grimes was hard in defense picking up 22 possessions and 13 rebound 50's for his side. First gamer Andrew Dore was very good on debut picking up 19 possessions, laying 6 tackles and kicking a goal on debut.

But again it was the form of 18 year old Jesse Hogan that had Demon fans talking after another dominant display with a 6 goal game from just 7 possessions. "Yep, but Hoegs didn't get much of the ball, but boy did he make the most of his possesions. He just gets in the right positions and when he does get his opportunity, he is within goal sight. He is a beautiful kick for goal and kicking 6 goals straight this afternoon and taking his tally to 18 for the first 5 games of the year.

After their confidence winning match last weekend, the Melbourne Demons have arguably the toughest road trip in football today, taking on the Fremantle Dockers over at Patterson's stadium on Saturday evening.
Melbourne come off their first win of the year against the Power last weekend, but coming up against last year's Grand Finalists is going to prove another tough challenge for Hayden Sumner and his young men.

The Dockers are coming off a sold win against the Lions at the Gabba winning comfortably by 25 points and will be looking to cement themselves into the top 4 win another win against the Demons in this twilight contest.

Melbourne have made 2 changes to the side that won last week against the Power with ruckman Max Gawn who was suspended for a week for his "scratching" attempt against Power ruckman Brent Renouf last week. Jared Petrenko has also been dropped from the side after a few quiet weeks, after blistering in the first month of football. Jake Spencer has been recalled to the side after a solid performance in the VFL while Dean Kent has been given a chance after amassing a 34 possession game for Casey last weekend.

"Yeah Jared has been an interesting one really. He started the year off well, but we just feel he has been below standard over the last fortnight and we just want him to go back to the reserves to execute his defensive efforts some more and just to get the confidence back in his ability to win the ball as well. He is a vital cog in our forward 50 with the pressure he brings into the side, so hopefully he can regain some form quickly. But young Kent has got the opportunity after some solid weeks at Casey. Picking up another 34 possessions on the weekend, he'll be given the chance and to start on the ground to show what he can make at senior level.

FREMANTLE have recorded their 3rd win of the season after downing the confident Demons by 32 points at Patterson's Stadium in front of 36, 484 people.
The Dockers have won back to back games against the Brisbane Lions and now the Demons to record their 3-2 start and now sitting in 9th position on the ladder pushing for a top 8 appearance after reaching the Grand Final last season.

Melbourne now fall to 1-5 to start their season off sitting in 14th position on the ladder with a winnable match against the Lions at the MCG next weekend.
The Dockers certainly didn't have it all there own way to begin the match with, with the Demons pushing the Dockers right up until half time, before the inexperienced Demons fell away to a home side who had a point to prove. The Demons led the Dockers heading into the first break and to much the surprise of the Dockers faithful, had scores level at half time.

But it was a 10 goal third quarter from the home side is what showed in the end and what proved to be too much for the Demons to come back from which resulted in the 32 point win for the Dockers. Aaron Sandilands and Jonathan Griffin had a big evening against the inexperience of Jake Spencer and Chris Dawes winning the hitout count 51 to 22 after the suspension of Max Gawn throughout the week. Doesn't matter who you put up against Sandilands he'll generally monster of most players, but it would have been handy to have Gawn in the side standing at 208cm compared to Sandilands 211cm.

The Dockers midfield was able to get there hands on the ball first with the dominance of their ruckman, with Barlow, Ibbotson and Crowley each having over 30 possessions, while Hill, Suban and Fyfe found plenty of the ball through the corridor. Dockers captain Matthew Pavlich wound back the clock for everyone to see with a massive performance in the forward 50, kicking a career high and one of the biggest bags we'll see, with 9 goals straight on the day. Jon Griffin provided a target inside 50 as well, kicking 3.2 along with his 13 hitouts.

In a bleak day for the Demons, ex captain Jack Trengove played a better game from him, picking up 28 touches and 10 clearances. New captain Nathan VanBerlo was solid with 25 possessions and 8 tackles, while Sam Blease has continued his great form over the last month with another 22 possession game. Demons forward Jesse Hogan was much quieter this week and credit goes to Michael Johnson who played on the kid after kicking 18 goals in the first 5 weeks, only managed 2 along with his mate up forward in Chris Dawes who missed a couple of opportunities kicking 2.4 for the game.

After a good showing against the Power last weekend, Melbourne were bought back down to earth a bit against a quality opposition. But they have a chance to get back to the MCG next week to face off against a Lions side who has also only won the one game for the year. Melbourne have the chance to go 2-5 heading into next week.

We're back at the MCG for this Sunday's clash between the Melbourne Demons and the Brisbane Lions. Brisbane come across to Melbourne having won 1 match in their first 6 matches with a win against the Power 3 weeks ago. They now have the opportunity to come to the MCG and take on the Demons who has also only won the 1 match so far in 2014 which funnily enough, was against the Power a fortnight ago.

This contest shapes up to be a cracker in the sense that two struggling sides will go one on one against each other and it's a great opportunity for both sides to notch up their 2nd win of the season.
Melbourne have been competitive in 80% of their games this year compared to last where there average loosing margin was over 60 points. This time around, only once have they conceded such a high score.

The Demons have made quite a number of changes to the side in which to Fremantle last weekend at Subiaco. Melbourne coach Hayden Sumner has said right from the beginning of pre season that players in form will be given every opportunity and fortunately enough for the Demons they have plenty of players performing in the VFL. Lynden Dunn comes into the side for his first game of the year after starring last weekend kicking 4 goals, Jared Petrenko comes back into the side after a week off in the VFL and was solid again with 26 possessions to his name. Max Gawn comes back from his one week suspension and young Josh Tynan comes in for his first game of the season and will start at the sub against the Lions after consistently performing well in the VFL in the first 6 rounds.

Jake Spencer has made way for Max Gawn after the 208cm giant served his suspension. Rohan Bail and Danny Butcher come back into the VFL after quieter performances in the senior side while forward Jeremy Howe has been dropped, as the coach mentioned him not performing at the level we expect him too so far in 2014.

The Lions have only made the one change after their bye week last weekend with Jared Polec coming into the side whilst Jack Redden comes out through injury.

Jesse Hogan stamps himself on the competition as the Demons beat Lions
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Sunday afternoon football sees the Demons run out winners to notch up their 2nd win of the season defeating the Brisbane Lions by 27 points in front of a healthy crowd of 33, 654.

The last game to see out round 7 was anticipated to be a great match up between two young sides who had been struggling in 2014 and both there wins came against the Power in rounds 1-6. But it was the Demons who kicked out to a firing start to notch up the 18.11.119 to 14.8.92 win.
If Demons fans hadn’t been excited about Western Australian youngster Jesse Hogan before this match, then they sure are excited about him now with the 17 year old putting on a clinic against the helpless Lions, kicking a career high, and round best 7 goals. It is certainly enough to win him the rising star award later in the week, but it was such a dominant display from the 17 year old, Melbourne fans are starting to congratulate the coaching staff for getting rid of Mitch Clark to West Coast to get games into this young fella.

Melbourne started the evening off in good fashion only restricting the Lions to 1.1 in the first quarter whilst kicking away with a 3 goal first term. It was the second quarter however when the difference between the two sides started to show, and that’s when Hogan started to let loose. Led by Nathan Jones and Jack Viney through the midfield, Melbourne were able to score 7.4 in the second quarter to the Lions 4.1. Jesse Hogan finished with 3 for the quarter and alarm bells started to ring for the Lions.
But of course the young Lions side were always going to hit back, kicking 6.3 in the third quarter after their coach Mark Thompson gave them a big spray at half time. However they just couldn’t stop the Demons from scoring with another 4.1 for the quarter themselves seeing them take a 22 point lead heading into the last quarter.

But the Demons continued no matter how much pressure the Lions put on or how closer the Lions got within the lead, the Demons always found a way, with winners all over the ground and a huge presence up forward got the job done by 27 points in the end.
It was such a strange game of football with the Lions having 109 more possessions then their opposition, 66 to 37 uncontested marks, 83 to 50 tackles and smashed the Demons with 53 inside 50’s to 43 and still lost the game by just under 5 goals.

As mentioned earlier it was Nathan Jones and Nathan VanBerlo who stood up and found plenty of the ball for the Demons with 33 possessions a piece. Luke Shuey found some form again after a few quiet weeks picking up 24 touches and 7 inside 50’s while some of their youngsters Dean Kent (25 possessions) and Jack Viney (25 possessions 3 clearances) were also handy through the midfield.
But it was the story of youngster Jesse Hogan who seems to be getting better and better as the games roll on. Hogan finished with 21 possessions, all 21 kicks, 4 marks and 7.5 for the afternoon. In fairness he could of finished with 9-10 goals had he of converted straight, but he’d be happy with a bag of 7 to take his tally to 27 for the year and currently at the end of round 7 sits 6th on the goal kicking table.

His partner in crime Chris Dawes also had a big day picking up 19 possessions, taking 12 marks, 10 hitouts and kicked 5 goals as he was one of the best on field. Lynden Dunn enjoyed his come back into the Demons side with 2 goals added to his name.
For the Lions it was a different story. Old firm Jonathan Brown played a lone hand up forward, kicking on and kicking 4.1 for his 19 possessions just showing that the old timer has a lot of football left in him. Andrew Raines and Aaron Cornelius finished with 2 goals apiece. Simon Black was again best for the Lions with 28 possessions, whilst Irishmen Pearce Hanley found plenty of the ball with 26 touches and laying 4 tackles for his effort. But the Lions didn’t have too many other contributors on the day with Banfield, Leuenberger and Hubers all trying hard.

But it was a day for the Demons and their 2nd win of the year and the emergence of youngster Jesse Hogan. If the Demons can keep this young kid with the side for a decade, he’ll be the pivotal point for them to make their next move on the AFL premiership.

Cant wait for the next installment, i once played melbourne and they had hogan at FullBack -.-
Very strange to have Hogan at full back!, but I guess that's Melbourne's bad player management skills coming into play once again
