Maybe Carlile starts on the ground, and either Hombsch/Impey/O'Shea leave the team to make room for Redden. Then Sam Gray to the sub role, and Monfries takes his place. Youngy is playing superbly, as are the previously mentioned defenders, so it's a tough call. This incredible depth actually makes me a little sad at times.

Don't think Redden is in our best 22 to be honest. He is way behind on fitness as well.

I like the idea of Redden being our third tall forward and backup ruckman, similar to the Lade/Brogan years. The game has changed a bit since then, so I don't know if it will work.

the last 22 I posted is almost the same as the best 22 we are seeing come together on field but with three changes. I had Butcher in but we wont always play with 3 talls. I had Moore and Stewart on the bench but Hombsch is in and Impey is in. The rest, ie. 19 players, are probably best 18 quality - for most teams.

Going back over the list and rating our players made me realise again how incredible our depth is. For me it's hard to fill that 6th spot in the forward line, right now Sammy Gray might take it, the spot is his if he wants it. The rest is pretty settled. We have players that can come into the settled defence and add to it, not changing the way we operate, we can also rotate the key positions with other players and not lose a lot structurally, we still have the cattle to go about our business. This is the beginning of a long journey.

The men we have to build around are absolute stars. We have almost 18 of them in my opinion. Boak, Ebert, Hartlett, Wines, Cornes, Lobbe is just the midfield six and they are all gunning to be AAA grade superstars. Westhoff, Trengove, Schulz and Carlile the key pillars. Gray (now Gray x2), Monfries, Wingard, Polec, Broadbent, Jonas. Outstanding talent. Guys like Pittard and O'Shea are so close to stamping a place in this best 18 forming. They're the names you want to put in the almost full best 18 but there are so few spots for so many players.

Well, its the bye and I reckon the best 22 at this stage is still a bit hard to pick, especially trying to get balance (with apologies to Redden). While most are locks, and there are choices on the edges, I think it is looking like:

Forwards:
