Well the IOC has shortlisted the final 3 cities for the 2022 Winter Olympics, the next Olympics Games to be bid upon - Oslo, Beijing and Almaty but as the below Deadspin article shows it wasn't on merit so to speak.

The 2022 Winter Olympics will be held in either Oslo, Norway, Beijing, China, or Almaty, Kazakhstan. Trimming the list of potential host cities to three finalists was easy enough for the IOC, because the other five all decided they don't want the Olympics. Oslo is expected to drop out within a couple of months.

Could be fun....

It is a fascinating predicament.

Beijing looks all but certain to be named as host city for 2022. As you quoted, Oslo is set to pull out due to dwindling political support. So that leaves Beijing and Almaty as the final two options and, well, Almaty is in Kazakhstan.

The IOC faces a real issue here and this certainly won't be the last time cities show reluctance to host the Games. Estimates suggest that the recent Games in Sochi cost Russia in excess of $50 billion to host.

Sure, it may well do wonders for tourism...but that's a hell of a lot of money to spend. Not surprisingly, there are plenty who believe that cost to be far too high and just not equitable.

I really think there is going to be a re-think re hosting Olympic Games (and Soccer World Cups) - the cost is just too much. No country really wants to put up the cash, unless they are a military dictatorship seeking good publicity (in effect, China) or an Oil-state in the Middle East trying to buy some prestige.

The cost of hosting is too high, and particularly the social upheaval. Small events (Tour De France in UK, World Champs in a particular sport) are fine - but the Olympics and Soccer World Cup are too big.

Unless the IOC/FiFA decide it can be done by using existing facilities - ie, you don't have to build a dozen new stadiums, you can use what you already have. That might mean Olympics held by country rather than a city. Most cities have at least one world-class venue. So 7-10 cities => Olympic venues covered. No need to build new ones. Also would reduce the inevitable hotel accommodation disaster by spreading it out across multiple cities.

Of course, that would reduce the chance of bribery and corruption to IOC & FIFA bigwigs during the construction process - so no chance of that.

So be prepared for a lot of major sporting events in China, Qatar, Dubai, Oman, - hey, maybe Kim Jong Un may want one.

Football world cup is fine for a nation with reasonable existing infrastructure in place such as stadiums, airports, transport etc...

Believe it or not there are a lot more people interested in watching big football matches as opposed to the womens downhill.

Beijing won it, if anybody was wondering

yay...........

Only good things to come out of this will be that China wont be as big a threat for our summer olly bid in 2030's.

tough thinking of another Asian nation which will complete with us then, as they are all hosting Winter or summer games. in the 2020's.

and that it is in our timezone, which isnt such a good thing i find for Winter Olympics cause all the good sports are in the day time. 3rd one in our timezone in a row.

When China is your safe option, then u gotta fix up the bidding options.
