Had never really paid attention before, but the timing of scores is BS, particularly those to open a quarter.

Jobe Watson kicked the opening goal on Saturday at 00:12, but it took the goal umpire 5 seconds to signal so the goal is listed at 00:17.

Deledio did likewise at 00:13 and was also credited officially at 00:17.

Perhaps that is correct though. Perhaps it is a goal when the umpire says it is a goal, not when the ball passes between the goalposts.

A number sources have McHale as 714 overall i.e. including the missed 1930 GF. So I wonder which number will be celebrated if and when the time comes.

Given that McHale's number at most is believed to be 713, then that is what should be officially recognised.

However, in light of the numerous "new" discoveries in recent years, I don't fully trust the 713 figure either.
Are we sure McHale didn't miss another match in that long sequence ?

So everyone is thrilled with Port's attendances this year, but we shouldn't forget how pathetic their finals attendances have been.

Port's average home final attendance: 36,651*
Port's largest home final attendance: 46,978*
Largest final attendance in Adelaide: 50,521#

There have been three 50,000 crowds for a final in Adelaide.

* excludes Adelaide's "home" final v Port Adelaide
# that was the "Showdown Final"

Richmond probably won't make the finals, and North will probably beat Essendon, anyway ...

Three coaches have a 0-3 finals record
Five coaches have a 0-2 finals record

With Lance Franklin not playing today, his tally of 67 goals to win the league goal kicking is the =2nd lowest to do so since 1965. He only managed that many thanks to 9 and 6 in the last 2 weeks.

If not for that burst, 62 goals would have won the title, and that would be the equal lowest tally since 1965.

Geelong bookended their 2014 season conceding a score of 12 9 81 while kicking their season high of 21 17 143.
Both games were at Kardinia Park.

Melbourne's score of 14 9 93 was their highest score of 2014.

Since Nathan Buckley took over as coach, Collingwood scored their lowest score vs Hawthorn with 8 8 56 last night.

Since their last premiership in 1980, Richmond have played in four finals series (1982, 1995, 2001, 2013). They can now finally obliterate the statistic that since that time they have played the same number of finals series as Fitzroy (1981, 83, 84, 86).

That was always my stat, although it was based on 1982 when Richmond last played in a GF. That way, Fitzroy were ahead until last year.

I'd have to look at this further, but usually you can say within the first few rounds, 7 of the top 8 sides are set. That didn't happen this year until Round 17 which is very late. Just checking the last few years:

2014: Round 17
2013: Round 2 (Essendon), Round 3 (Carlton)
2012: Round 14
2011: Round 8
2010: Round 4
2009: Round 3
2008: Round 2
2007: Round 6

When the hapless St Kilda were thrashed by the Adelaide Crows today, it consigned the Saints to their 27th wooden spoon, and also ensured that there have been St Kilda wooden spoons in 10 of the 13 decades of the league to date. Interestingly, the decades in which St Kilda avoided finishing last were the 1930s, the 1960s and the 1990s, each 30 years apart.

Lenny Hayes is on target to end his career with more tackles than any other player in history. He needs 21 more with 4 games to go and is averaging 6.6 per game this year. Only once this year has he had less than 5 tackles.

http://afltables.com/afl/stats/players.html#t7
Lenny has had a disappointing couple of weeks with 4 tackles in each of the last two weeks.

He's now 11 behind Jude Bolton's all-time record with 2 games remaining.
With respect to tackles, the last 3 weeks were 3 of his worst 4 games for the year. But he got there with 13 today, 1 off his career best.

Career Tackles: (http://afltables.com/afl/stats/players.html#t7)
#1 - 1496 - Lenny Hayes
#2 - 1490 - Jude Bolton

After Luke Ball and Brett Kirk, Lenny will finish with the 3rd best career average for 200-gamers.

I was looking at the 1997 season and I saw Collingwood was on top after nine rounds and failed to make the finals. Has that happened before?

Also there is a round where one win separates the top nine teams (maybe round eight). That deep into the season, has that happened before?

In 1948, Fitzroy were on top of the ladder in Round 11 with a 9-2 record and clear favourite to win the premiership. For some inexplicable reason, the Lions failed to win another game for the season from this point, losing its last 8 in succession including losses to bottom teams St Kilda and Hawthorn, missing the finals altogether.

I am not sure of exact statistics for tight Top 8 win loss records; however in 1993 (when a Final 6 was used) the finals teams were in order Essendon 13-6-1, Carlton 13-6-1, North Melbourne 13-7, Hawthorn 13-7, Adelaide 12-8 & West Coast 12-8. Then in order came Geelong 12-8, Collingwood 11-9, Footscray 11-9, Melbourne 10-10, Fitzroy 10-10 & St Kilda 10-10. Unfortunately the Brisbane Bears 4-16, Richmond 4-16 & Sydney Swans 1-19 won just 9 games between them, but even the Bears and Tigers were outside finals chances midway through the season before falling away, so this was an unusually even season.

Another even season was 1957, when premier Melbourne headed the ladder with a 12-5-1 record, and wooden spooner Geelong went 5-12-1. And in 1964, the finalists in order were Melbourne 14-4, Collingwood, Essendon & Geelong (all 13-4-1), with Hawthorn missing narrowly in 5th at 13-5. So even were the finals contenders that if a thrilling win by Melbourne over Hawthorn that year had gone the other way, Hawthorn would have headed the ladder, and eventual premier Melbourne missing the finals.

Arguably nothing can compare to the fall from grace of Melbourne in 1965. Reigning premier, finalist for 11 consecutive years, including 8 grand finals and 6 premierships, the strain between Norm Smith and the board became too much. Ron Barassi was given a clearance to Carlton, but still, Melbourne were on a winning streak of 10 games (started in '64), undefeated after 8 rounds and on top, still on top a week later after the streak was broken.

But then the wheels fell off, Norm Smith was sacked then reinstated but the damage was done. After 10 straight wins, being 8-0 in 1965 and flying towards another finals series, they won just 5 of their next 28 games and the curse of Norm Smith was born.

Curious that McDonald hasnt kicked a goal in his first year so far...I know hes a halfbacker but even they creep through the mid/get fifties occasionally.
