Including the coming finals, the (disappointing*) location of finals in Sydney:

9 - Stadium Australia
5 - SCG

The only year in which Sydney has won 2 home finals was the last year they were minor premier, 1996.

* can't wait for 2017 and the prospect of finals at the SCG again

PS: I went to the Lockett-with-dodgy-hammy-55m-point-after-the-siren final :(

Two VFL grand finals have been played on the third Saturday in October (1921 and 1923).

The dates are significant as the Caulfield Cup was also run on those days.

Andrew Mackie played in his 50th career defeat at the hands of the Hawks...in his 217th game. Would he have played the most games of anyone before reaching that mark of defeats?

I still marvel at Michael Tuck's record, 302 wins, 123 losses and a draw. Playing in 302 wins is a record that will never be broken.

I often see grammar like that. It could be read that Mackie has played in 50 losses against the Hawks!

Joel Selwood has played 182 games and is 147-35. Will he better 167-50? I'd say he will.

For comparison, Mackie was 141-41 after 182 games.

It's incredible that Selwood averages < 4.5 losses per year over 8 seasons . Melbourne, St Kilda and GWS have all had 35 losses in just the last 2 seasons!

10 current coaches have coached at least 2 finals. Four of them have a finals win% of 50% or less:
50% - Ross Lyon, Ken Hinkley
33% - Brenton Sanderson
25% - Nathan Buckley

28 coaches have coached 15 finals or more, 7 have a finals win% of 50% or less.
Ross Lyon and Rodney Eade are the only 2 of the 7 that have also never won a grand final.

In the majority of finals that Ross Lyon has coached, his side has scored less than 70 points.

Joel Selwood: the % of his games that will have been finals

If Geelong ...
- lose the SF: 11.4% (1 in 8.8 games)
- lose the PF: 11.9% (1 in 8.4 games)
- make the GF: 12.4% (1 in 8.1 games)

After Richmond were humiliated by Port Adelaide this afternoon, eliminated from the finals with a heavy thrashing from the Power, it became the 8th finals series which has featured Hawthorn and Richmond (1971, 1974, 1975, 1977, 1982, 2001, 2013 & 2014) but no finals meeting between the Hawks and Tigers. The only September match between these clubs would have taken place if they had played in the last round of a season that encroached onto the first weekend of September.

Richmond have now not won a finals match since 2001.

Also, Richmond have won only three finals since their last premiership, in 1982 (2nd semi), 1995 (2nd semi) and 2001 (1st semi).
This is the same number of finals wins as Fitzroy since that time, in 1981 (elimination final), 1986 (elimination final) and 1986 1st semi).

Yesterday's final in Adelaide attracted the highest ever AFL finals attendance in Adelaide:

50618 - AO - EF 2014, Port Adelaide v Richmond
-------------------------------------------------------
50521 - FP - SF 2005, Adelaide v Port Adelaide
50514 - FP - PF 2006, Adelaide v West Coast
50393 - FP - EF 2009, Adelaide v Essendon

Jack Dyer: 1932 (18yo), 1937-40 (23-26yo), 1946 (32yo)

I'd be guessing that Jack Dyer has the record for winning a B&F 14 years apart.

Dyer never won the 1932 B and F, so I wouldn't say it was 14 years apart.
The Richmond board however rejected the submission and evidence put forward by Trevor and myself that says no one won 1932 Best and Fairest, and as such they recognise Dyer's 1932 best and Fairest.

With respect, that seems to be an opinion at this stage. What counter-evidence does the club have that claims that Dyer did win the '32 B+F?

They (Richmond) have no evidence prior to his name suddenly appearing in a 1988 Annual report.
And it isn't just an opinion. 10 years of research in Newspapers, club minute books, Dyer family members, and it is apparent no award was bestowed in 1932.

Any newspaper articles from then? Although I'm guessing Club B+Fs probably didn't make the newspapers 80 years ago.

Five players have played 383 games, Tuck, Bartlett, Fletcher, R Harvey and B Harvey.
For each of the 5 bar Fletcher, game 383 was a final.
For Fletcher, it was the ANZAC Day game this year.

The last 17-5 side to go out in straight sets was Geelong in 1980. Now it's Geelong 2014.
Port ('01), WCE ('07') and Geelong ('14) out in straight sets, all finished the H&A season in 3rd.

You guessed wrong then. Even in the 1920s there were regular refs to an award which if not called B&F was nevertheless suitable to be called club champion, a few minutes search showing:
1929 - Essendon - http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/4067135
1929 - Carlton - http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/72662978
1926 - Footscray - http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/3815168
