Leigh Matthews- "Don't have unprotected sex with your wives during January"

Depends on his tone.

If it was trying to introduce it as a rule or something... then that's going a bit far and not something he has any right to have a say in.

But if it was just broaching the subject for the guys to just think about it and consider that a bit of pre-planning could save them from having to make a potentially difficult decision on the day of a big final... then thats a reasonable thing to discuss.

Plus when father and son kicks in for the Lions you want 17/18 years olds that were born at the start of the year so they are a bit more developed.

If it bleeds during January, mission accomplished.

Without being too technical, shouldn't Leigh have been saying no sex in December. If you count nine months from January....

Every Swans fan who reads this will be thinking of an ex-ruckman who put in one of the world's worst grand final performances.

Bradshaw missed Brisbane's semi-final against Carlton at the MCG in 2000, pulling out of the match to be with wife Angie for the birth of their first son Jake.

Bradshaw really should have done this in January.

And every West Coast fan is thankful for it.

Apparently he said this to his players during his days coaching Brisbane in order for his charges not to miss finals games due to attending the birth of their children.

Do family commitments become before your employer or in this case because it is something that is controllable he has a fair point?

Bottom line - Did Matthews overstep the mark?

Also, would you be resentful if your team was in the finals and a key player made himself unavailable for a big finals match due to the birth of his child?
Only Catholics would be up in arms....back then. The Pope's blurring the lines now so even they would not know whether to cheer or chuck a fit today.

Short sighted. Triple premiership players Marcus Ashcroft and Craig McRae were both born in September. What if their dads had subscribed to this theory?

My son was conceived early January and born 23 September. Maybe he should have said December and January to cover all bases!

Lots of babies usually born in September due to Christmas / New Year whoopsies!

Interestingly, today's Age is reporting that Paddy Ryder is marrying his fiance next weekend.

Which also happens to be Grand Final weekend.

Interesting time for a player likely to be involved in a finals series to have pegged a wedding for.
It's after the ASADA verdict, so looks like he knew he wouldn't make the GF anyway ;)
