Wow! The Saints are very generous. Lyons valued higher than B Vince? Not likely.

Lyons is a 22 year old on baller who can kick goals and take a good mark

Vince is a 29 year old outside player who isn't fast still a good player but you can see why they would rate Lyons.

Didn't Garlett play down back for a bit too, providing some pretty decent drive out of defence? Or was that Yarran? I can't recall whether his actual defending was any good though.

I also don't see any issue with fitting in Eddie, CC and Garlett. Eddie is clearly a small forward only (and very good at it), but I think the other two could play other roles.

Garlett and Eddie were tried at Carlton and they were flashy at times but you have to say it didn't work. He's handy but is he what we desperately need.
Eddie and Cameron are our two rotating forwards now. I wouldn't be chasing Garlett if Carlton want to see the back of him.
As for playing back down I don't ever recall him playing there. Wow he would be the specialist back man for standing Caleb Daniels;not a lot of body weight there.

I doubt the Saints are looking at last years trades between other clubs and making any kind of comparison. But whilst we are at it... Lyons has potentially 10 years left in his career where as Bern has maybe 2-3 max. Saints might really feel like they need a clearance player and have identified Lyons as a guy who can do that for them. What Melbourne were prepared to give up for Vince is totally irrelevant. Its pretty hard to say Lyons isn't worth that considering how badly mismanaged he was this year. Personally i hope we can hang on to him.

The rookie draft is the place to find rucks.

Sandilands, Cox, Jacobs and Mumford all came from the rookie draft. Back men are similar.

Category B are rookies, just without the draft bit. You find the ones you want and take them. The lower leagues aren't exactly teeming with talented, athletic ruckmen to draft anymore, that's partly why the foreign combines were started.

No doubt players would prefer to go to the best teams & this will happen for the gun players if they wish (but they could do the same without FA too).

...but also has allowed for players to move to other teams for new opportunities &/or $'s too. eg. Betts, Monfries, Pearce, Chaplin, Goddard, Dal Santo, etc - didn't move to top teams... so mid-range teams benefiting too.

I think it is more an issue that bottom-ranked teams lose out on players wanting a chance of success - but then the bottom teams tend to get better compensation banding value than the top ranked teams who lose a player...

The thing is though, it often means they have to start again. The lower teams put 8 years of development into these players, they leave, they start again. It's highly unlikely another star goes the other way because they're a bottom club, so it's just a vicious cycle.

Would you agree that Free Agency is only making the strong teams stronger and the lesser teams more average?

I beg to differ. Vince was a proven and experienced midfielder, best and fairest, and one of the team's leaders. Pick 23 for him last year I thought was about 4-6 places too low for a guy who has 3 exceptional years left in him. Yeah Lyons has 10 years, potentially, but was in and out of the side and even when he did play he hardly set the world alight. If we can jag pick 21 for him, then we've had a massive win.

Hawks lost buddy gaining frawley
Cats lost ablett gaining Clark
Swans gained buddy

So not really top tier gaining - more mid range teams.

Bottom tier teams losing experienced players but they get picks to help the rebuild.

Noble's been in heavy contact with schoenmakers since tuesday. He's expecting Ryan to ask for a trade to us at some stage, especially now Frawley is headed to Hawks. No news on potential trade's for Ryan yet.

Malceski doesn't want to come to SA.

No news on JC still.

My mate says he expects this to be a record breaking period for the amount of trades this year in AFL.
