Picked up on something post the 2012 AFL Trade Period and it relates to guernsey numbers for different teams.

Previous numbers in parentheses.

Tom Hickey got No. 1 (No. 40.)
Hamish McIntosh, No. 17 (No. 1.)
Shannon Byrnes, No. 10 (No. 17.)
Cale Morton, No. 40 (No. 10.)

Rodney Eade will make his debut as GC coach on his 57th birthday. He'll be the sixth-oldest coach to start at a new club.

Looks to be a plum job, surely he'll fare better than the others on this list?

AFL legend Kevin Bartlett has accused the league of a "historical lie" by crediting Jock McHale with a record 714 games as a feud broke out over who coached Collingwood’s 1930 premiership.

Kevin Bartlett accuses AFL of ‘historical lie’ over Jock McHale’s coaching games record

I heard this slightly animated discussion between KB and Col Hutchison on SEN this morning. Have long thought that KB had a valid point (the game is credited to Rush in my database), but felt that Hutchison made a good case in support of the AFL, arguing that the role of coaches has evolved since football's early days when the coach was merely the man who prepared the team during the week and perhaps had a say in team selection.

After all this I'm undecided. Difficult to view everything in context unless you were around at the time.

How difficult is it to get, nobody that I'm aware of is trying to get McHale removed from lists which show him as coach for the 1930 season.
We are just trying to get the truth told about how many games he coached.

The AFL Guide includes a section which lists coaches over the years and there are plenty of examples where a "season coach" being away was replaced for a game or two by an "acting coach" and both figures are recorded correctly - e.g. Bisset is away (interstate) from South Melb for 2 matches in 1935, Diggins is recorded as coach for both, so AFL Guide credits accordingly. Same with Perc Bentley being away from Richmond for a game in 1937, Jack Titus is listed as coach for a game.

If the AFL's "McHale ruling" stands and is applied in a consistent and even-handed way,
then 50+ coaches (and 12 clubs) have to have their career figures re-written.

"McHale ruling" = credit a game to a bloke who wasn't there, remove a game from a bloke who did the job on the day.
Australian Football history will be the laughing stock of the world.

If a player doesn't play are they credited with a game, whether it be in 1930 or 2014? A coach should be treated the same way.

Did Gary O'Donnell coach Essendon in 2006 for 1 game? How about Simon Goodwin in 2013?

Did Brendon Bolton coach Hawthorn for 5 games for 5 wins this year, or should those games be credited to Alastair Clarkson for some reason? Maybe because he was 2-time premiership coach, or because he went on to coach the premiership this year?

Again, I have O'Donnell credited with that game and not Sheedy. Is O'Donnell officially recognised by the AFL?

IIRC, Sheedy took steps in advance to ensure that game would be officially credited to him.
To me, O'Donnell was the coach that day and yes Sheedy wanted to be credited for it.

I was not happy with Sheedy in the week leading up to that game. I felt he was being very selfish.

Alrighty then, I've hit the Del key on Dal.

I am not a "Twitt" :) - never visited the site. In fact, I block the whole domain to stop other sites making useless connections to it. Ditto Facebook.

You should Paul.

If Twitter love is anything to go by, you'd be surprised at the footy people who would bow down before you if they ever crossed you in the street.

But that assumes you get a kick out of people telling you how awesome you are.
