Toast All things Paul Roos + Coaching: McCartney joins coaches

I think Carey has one of the best footy brains around. In a parallel universe he would have coached North to a flag. Not just a goal kicking player, amazing at every aspect and understood the game.
I'm not saying he doesn't but has he done any coaching/teaching players? Dermie's year playing at Collingwood when his body was cooked was amazing. Nearly got Sav Rocca a ton IIRC.

Leigh Brown?

Intelligence has nothing to do with coaching or skill
Chris Dawes is the smartest man on our list but he still hasnt learnt how to bend his elbows when taking a mark

Dermott Brereton would be considered smart by no one here but he has coached the GWS boys for a while now

I dont care if they get Doug Hawkins down for **** sake as long as they stick to talking footy

I think Derm is very intelligent, the only problem is he's all too aware and talks like he's smarter than he is.

Was the main one on one coach for Tomahawk, also done work with Cloke

Wasn't he an assistant at Collingwood while off his dial on gear? There are posts with me saying we should get him to replace Daniher, not knowing that at the time he was seeing bats everywhere he went. Another great dissection on my behalf.

Matthew Lloyd mentioning on AW he would like to get involved in specialist coaching

All diving jokes aside he was the best full forward since Lockett retired and if he was to do some one on one work with hogan regarding leading patterns it would help him immensely
And set shot kicking!

Don't know why people think Lloyd is stupid.

He's an excellent analyst, and he's not stupid at all.

Agree, he was a very good set shot, his analyses on the Sunday Footy Show are hard to fault. He certainly isn't stupid. I think it's just his dopey sounding voice that makes people leap to unfair conclusions. I suspect he'd make a better coach than most champion forwards. I think he'd be good at teaching a classic full-forward style player. For a more mobile half-forward, I'd take Carey. The thing is, we could take our pick - both seem to be taking offers.

Yeh good points.

From what I gather, Carey would be a better fit for Hogan, and Lloyd a better fit for McCartin.

Perhaps Carey could offer more across the entire forward line, but Lloyd would still be good.

If we can't have Carey, the next best thing is the bloke who sat front and centre at every marking contest Carey contested in all but four of his seasons at North. It just so happens that the bloke in question happens to be our Head of Development already and is well placed to assist both Hogan and any potential KPFs we draft after being in charge of the forwards at North before joining us.

I forgot we had Allison on board. Hard to keep track of all the coaches these days, but you make a very good point.

Just a quick intrusion.

Re Lloyd and Carey. I can't recall Roos appointing any "high profile" specialist coaches to his coaching staff at the Swans. Certainly, the coaching staff had 'projects', George Stone and Tadgh Kennelly, Stephen Taubert and Mike Pyke come to mind. Maybe the club psychologist and Barry Hall. :)

This is where Stone will be missed most in his retirement IMO.

Happy to be proven wrong, but I don't think specialist coaches are Roosy's style. He's more likely to appoint mentors from the senior playing group (which I understand the Demons might not have too many at the moment). I think Roos and the assistants identify weaknesses, and then empower the player and their mentors to work on them themselves.

Good insight, thanks.

No worries. Like I said, I could be proven wrong! :)

Out of interest, what areas of coaching responsibility do the following ex-Swans have at the Demons? Ben Mathews, Daniel MacPherson, Brett Allison (Head of Development), Greg Stafford. Dave Misson (Head of Conditioning?) George Stone before retirement. Am I missing anyone?
