The Tom Boyd for Griffen + 6 thread on the Draft/Trade board makes me sad.

Even posters I normally respect just ooze with stupidity when they post on the matter.

I wish they'd bother to educate themselves and look at the trade objectively, rather than needlessly 'picking a side' and responding negatively without any justification for their opinions.

I might have to, for a little bit.

Some of them are okay, and some of them should probably be set on fire and thrown screaming out of a helicopter. Unfortunately, since the Boyd deal, the scales have tipped towards the latter.

It's a mixture of jealousy, ignorance and surprise. Basically we've done something we've never done. This hurts them as we've moved out of the box they put us in I.e., non threatening poor Bulldogs. This scares them.

I love it.

Boyd was supposed to be off to Carlton, a crumbling institution still clinging desperately to ill-gotten past glories. Instead, the battlers from the west have poached him on a big deal, and he couldn't be happier to be with his mates in the red, white and blue. The arrogant tossbuckets that came onto our board to discuss the worth of our gun players and bizarrely then wish us well are nowhere to be seen.

They console themselves, spewing out "Well, they can't hold onto them all if that's what they're paying Boyd, we'll get Bontempelli later", but later will never come.

With Moons gone we definitely need to hire another specialist tall forward coach, Boyd genuinely has no older players to help him develop his craft. Our young mids have had guys like Boyd and Crossy, tall backs have had Moz, small backs have had murph, small forwards have had Gia.

I agree that we've moved out of the box. But I doubt anyone's scared. When teams - any team - does something unorthodox, the group will tend to round on them. There is a real groupthink mentality in AFL circles. It is the downside of the team ethos. And we've done something seriously unorthodox. So people will assume it will blow up in our face. And if it works, then everyone will be trying the same thing.

I normally am as conservative as anybody. But I think the Dogs really needed to take a risk here. We will never ever beat GWS and GC in this generation unless we do. Fingers crossed!

Youngest player to kick 50 goals, tall forward and held down CHF from a very young age. Perfect role model.

Was that one of the problems with the last 2 coaches.

Both of them were criticized for doing too much. They were both surrounded by part time coaches.

Lack of funding hurt both macartney and eade. (Yes i know macartney was a crap manager and match day coach as well)

Yeah it was a good article, pretty much summed everything up. "Unfortunately, we're certain the majority of supporters and the media will struggle to separate player from pay-packet, so Boyd is going to cop some stick."

This will be the issue while the kid develops. How long will it take him to start to impact? Who knows. Most think it will be in his 4th or 5th year. I remember Kelvin Templeton kicked 100 goals at 21 and so did Buddy. That lines up with Tom's 3 or 4th year.

In the meantime get ready to cop it while Griffen slays em at GWS and pick 6 and or 4 turn into decent proscpects. While we wait and play the long game.

Footy doesn't like the long game though as the media and supporters go from deliriously happy eulogising of teams winning one week to depressingly sad right offs the the next week when we lose. Get ready for the Scully comparisons to keep coming and banging on about how much we are playing and have paid to get Boyd.

The kid is 19.....he will need time.

Boyd was a demigod when Carlton fools believed he was a cert to come to them, while you can even look at the Levi Casboult to Bulldogs thread on your own board to see how s**t Casboult became when the rumours came out he was looking for a trade, only to have him suddenly become a promising future star again when he re-signed.

Maybe if we end up with Sumich, we might not necessarily need one.
