Recruiting Targets Summary

Kane may be a super bloke but when you are trying to win Priemierships as we are he doesn't cut the absolute elite, if we want to be an elite club we need players with an elite skill in the team, keeping Kane and upgrading him says they want to play him in the role I suggest for Daniel and Johansen and to be frank they are both going to offer more than him.

Clubs look like passing on both. All rumours say that Daniel wants to come to us and Johansen looks like being passed up all together leaving the door open for us, both would be great gets.

Having Petrenko on a rookie list isnt going to hurt anyone, he doesn't even need to play, I just think it would be interesting to see him in a good system like ours and see if he flourishes, wouldn't be the worst idea, we could get Blease or someone like that.

Panos would hold down Newton's spot thats been vacated on the list, his move to the midfield makes him a juicy option, his skills have always been okay but now he knows how to find the ball himself we would be silly not to take someone at 193cm to play in the middle, we don't have anyone of size baring Youngy and Moorey in the middle and they are only 188, adding size to the midfield is a way we can improve into next year
Kane Mitchell >>>>> Patrenko and Panos.

Mitchell more than earned his promotion. He gives us something pick 50+ in the draft would get us.. A ready made back up runner for our team. For all this talk about him costing us games he has done far more good with his gut running and energy than he has cost us with his skills. He is more than elite in the AFL when it comes to fitness and considering a lot of our game revolves around being super fit I am more than happy having him on the list as a back up in case Polec/White for instance get injured.

Really disapointed that Port didn't sell Newton's spot on the list more, even though he isn't best 22 he is definately in our best 30 and all premiership lists need 30-33 players who can play week in week out.

Also mind numbingly confused as to why Kane Mitchell was kept on, numerous times this year he cost us games, solid reserves player at best.

With the way our list is shaping up for next season I'd really like us to target 2-3 genuine small forwards and let Gus, Robbie and Chad into the midfield more often, Neadey is fantastic but his size wont let him play 22 games a year so we have to back him up more.

Caleb Daniel and Jake Johansen are two guys we have to take, even though they are little they come with huge upside, Daniel has freakish fitness and endurence he would fit right in helping out Neady and Johansen is a natural leader and knows where the footy is. Both would be great for us.

Someone like Jared Petrenko would also be worth a look at, Adelaide didn't give him 23 for no reason, kid can play, under Ken and Vossy he would blossim, maybe a rookie spot.

Watching games this year our contested ball seems to relie on Ollie and Trav alot, getting someone else in to help them out would be handy, I big senior body, someone like Matt Panos would be a great get.

4 spots there (Panos, Petrenko, Daniel and Johansen) I'd like to see 1 back up ruck/defender. Sean McLaren is a name that has been linked with us he is very lanky and probably just a list clogger but gives us rediculous depth down back and in the ruck.

Big 2015 ahead, Carn the Mighty Power!

A few things.

- You can't assume Port didn't do its absolute best to keep Newton on the list.
- Name the games that Mitchell cost us. Nonsense statement
- We don't need to recruit any more short people
- You want elite players and at the same time you want to rookie list Petrenko :drunk:
- Panos would replace Newton on the list and it's doubtful he'll be getting games over Moore and Young
- Your posts that are against bigfooty rules (abusing other posters) have been deleted. Maybe you should read them before posting.

Exactly. Mitchell knows his limitations and works to his strengths. If we're losing games because of something he did, my question is, why are we in the position that relies on a second year rookie-listed player to win the game for us?

He's not going to be in the best 22, but if we need speed, he's better than most and understands the gameplan better than someone in the 90s would.

Name the games that Mitchell cost us.

You could argue Essendon. Had 9 touches (at 55% efficiency) to his direct opponent's 25, and missed an absolute sitter late in the game. I don't believe that one player can single-handedly cost a team the game, but Mitchell was a clear WOG that day and we lost by 2 points.

If he played like that every week people would love him

Definitely. But he hasn't even come close to playing like that in any game before or since.

I think there is a difference between 'losing a game' compared to 'relying on them to win the game for us'.
IMO one person can lose a game, look at when that Collingwood numpty dropped a sitter in the dying minutes to lose (sorry can't remember the game off the top of my head). He marks Collingwood win. There are lots of examples where one action can change the game and as a result lose instead of win. People bang on about 1 umpiring decision changing a game (because it can) but that's not controllable so why bother.
We rely on 22 players contributing to win a premiership. It doesn't mean that all 22 have to be Ollie Wines, but they have to be capable in playing in a fashion that is not detrimental to the team.
If Mitchell sticks that tackle against Sydney do we win? Who knows, but it certainly made a difference.
There has to be a reason why so many like myself believe Mitchell is problematic, we don't want this to be the way. We love PAFC and want to win the premiership as much as the next supporter. Anyways it's good to have a debate on players abilities.
And please no Petrenko.
For those that criticise Petrenko, are Petrenko and Mitchell really that different if you looked at the comparison without bias?

Racist.

Jeez Mitchell gets smashed on here. I certainly don't believe he'll be in our best 22 next year but some of the stuff I'm reading is ridiculous. Newton had and still has the potential to be a more valuable footballer, but in terms of team balance I have no problem with the coaching staff repeatedly demonstrating their preference to fill the fringe midfielder role with a guy with a bit of pace and spark.

People still holding a grudge against him for being made to look physically inadequate by the guy who epitomises the current trend of midfield beasts running around is also silly.

Did not see a lot of Newton, being far away it is a little hard to see maggie games, from what I witnessed with his little AFL game time it was to hard to make any real call on it. Mitchell is a handy player who needs another pre-season and more game time to increase his confidence and skill level. From what I have seen so far I am not going to hold my breath but the lad needs a chance to prove himself.

I would expect both Moore and Mitchell to improve under Voss (no doubt the other lads will also). LHR posted a while back that he cant wait to see what Vossy can do for Mitchell, I suggested he was a little optimistic in his expectations. I truly hope I eat my words!

I reckon Panos would offer far more flexibility than Mitchell.
Not sure if he's that quick but certainly has height, excellent kicking and can take a good grab. He will play AFL next season.

Mitchell is the most underrated player on our list.
He does offer something AND has improved his so called weaknesses each and every year.
IMO if we were to play someone as a specialist sub he would be the best we have.

Atm he still struggles to impact games for four quarters but for one quarter or a bit more he is a beauty and has played a big part in winning us games after coming on as a sub more than once.

For mine being put on the main list was a no brainer and for people that keep harping on about Hawthorn having players on their list that are staying put, "know where they stand" in the team and work their arses off when their turn comes, just what the hell do you think Mitchell has been doing since joining us?
He has worked as hard as anyone else if not more, both on the field when it's his turn to "put up", and off the field going by his improvement in some aspects of his game.

Crikey, talk about saying one thing and then the exact opposite when it suits.

No one has a problem using Mitchell as a sub. If Tom Logan is fine to be used a break in case of emergency, Kane Mitchell needs to accept he offers more to the team as a sub than a 4qtr player.

Atm, but the way he is improving he offers more than that and is a perfect 22-30 player. Who knows, he may keep improving and become a first 22 player.
More tackles that stick, more goals and for four quarters will see him firmly placed in our 22.

I think if someone realises that Petrenko is a small defender and not a small forward, then they will have someone that is at least playable at AFL level on their hands. As a small forward he was useless.

I guess Panos comes into the picture now that Newton is gone. My query is over his tank and whether he can play as a mid at AFL level. Either way, he'll still be behind Moore and Young.

Seriously, when are people going to understand that very few players look like the complete package before reaching 50 games. Dont judge inexperienced players by the mistakes they make. Judge them on what they do right and what they bring to the team.

Broadbent and O'Shea are two of this boards previous whipping boys who have come good. Pittard has just hit close to 50 games and he is due to hit his straps. Some blokes take a little bit of time. Not everyone can be a Wines or Wingard and shine from day one.

Mitchell has given us good value - 23 games in two years for a player on the rookie list. Also given his dedication, determination, and work ethic we owe him something. A one year contract on the main list seems about right and gives him a well-deserved chance to establish an AFL career. If he doesn't improve, c'est la vie.
