Interested to see where Lever falls on draft day after he ruptured his ACL. Troy Menzel certainly hasn't lost any of his agility and speed after his knee injuries. We still had a mancrush on Troy, but other clubs saw it differently and passed for other elite talents. Might be a similar situation for Lever.

There are claims that Lever stands 194 cms and has a larger wingspan than Sam Reid. Reid certainly plays taller than his height (195 cms ?????) with a reach of 205 cms. Might compensate for Lever being approx. an inch shorter than the best defenders who are 196 cms or taller. Jamison is a good spoiler and defender who is around the 194 cm mark.

Jake won’t pull the lever on 2014

Top-end talls face contrasting journeys to the draft

Calder Cannons star Jake Lever still on draft radar despite serious knee injury
Sounds like a mature kid who has captained two teams.

AFL draft combine harvester: tall defenders
Ian Kyte, Calder Cannons: "Jake had his knee reconstructed in December. He's back in training now and he'll be ready to go when he gets to a club. Had he played this year he would possibly have been the No. 1 selection, he's a tall, aggressive, competitive key defender who's a really good leader. He might have even spent some time in the midfield this year had he been able to play His leadership qualities have improved this year even though he hasn't been able to play and he hasn't missed a beat with his recovery, he does everything right, to the point we had to force him to take a break at times."

Phantom form guide: October update
It might be hard to imagine, but one of the most impressive prospects this year has been Lever, despite not playing a game. The running, combative and physical tall defender continues his diligent and determined rehabilitation from a knee reconstruction and took important steps last week. At the combine he ran 3.2 seconds for the 20-metre sprint and also competed in the three-kilometre time trial. Everything is on track for Lever to start pre-season ready to go.

Lever's had a knee injury, but does he lack the speed and agility to match athletic forwards?

Hurley makes do after he ran 3.11 seconds for the 20 metre sprint.

Hurley is an interesting case. Speed has never been a factor in his defending - So test results can be misleading.

It should be mentioned that there are a number of very good defenders that are under 196cm.
Harry Taylor 195cm
Brian Lake 195cm
Alex Rance 194cm
Scott Thompson 193 cm
Ted Richards 192cm

Darren Glass & Matthew Scarlett both played at 192cm.

Lever's risky business
Last weekend he ticked off another milestone, completing the Noosa triathlon alongside Calder's strength and conditioning coach, Steve Forcone. It had been a goal he set early in the year, and became something to work towards when he knew football was out of the picture.

Despite his positivity, there are still things Lever wished he got the chance to do this season, like try his luck in the midfield. At 193cm, he feels he has the shape and traits to move in there, and some clubs think it could be his best spot in the future.

This bloke is going to be one of the great defenders of the modern era..
