yaco55 what is your theory on why Dutton didn't stop the train wreck back in 2013?

Dutton became the sports minister in September 2013. A lot of water (tepid water) had gone under the bridge by that stage. Ie ASADA had already handed over interim report, EFC removed from finals, Hird suspended etc. Fair to say his predecessor couldn't have left a bigger mess.

What

This is only happening because of the Sports Minister - The same Sports Minister who is on WADA's Executive Board.

what is happening? Are you suggesting the minister is telling Asada to adjust or change evidence, coerce witnesses to say something they do not believe is true and thus commit a federal crime etc?

Libs only came to power in the second half of 2013 - Two theories - One is that the AFL is seen as Green Weekly by the Libs and on more than occasion VLAD has publically criticised the social policies of the Lib's. Could see a bit of payback to the ALP - Lib's wanted ASADA to offer deals which they thought the players would blindly accept and then the LIB's could have a politcal/senate enquiry to show the interfering/incompetence of the ALP.Doubt we will have an enquiry now.

I am suggesting that the Minister put ASADA under insufferable pressure to act, after Minister Dutton employed Justice Downes to review the case. At this time the case was dormant but ASADA was forced into action.

There probably won't be much to talk about for the next few weeks unless ASADA prematurely taps out or Chip provides a few more leaks.. so I reckon it might be interesting to venture into tinfoil hat country and have a bit of a discussion about potential political interference from the current government.

Thought i'd throw together a brief timeline of events and Tony Abbott quotes on ASADA:

February 2013 - BDIAS

February 2013 - Julia Gillard and her sports minister Kate Lundy want the ASADA investigation completed before the federal election in September 2013

March 2013 - Tony Abbott slams BDIAS on 2GB - "We are very concerned and the problem with what the Government has done is that they came out, made a dramatic announcement – it was supposed to be the blackest day in Australia’s sporting history – and yet there’s been very little evidence come out to justify it and, as things stand, it looks like this is a government which is prepared to trash sport for the sake of getting a headline"

May 2013 - World anti-doping bounty hunter Richard Young, is enlisted by ASADA to review the Operation Cobia investigation and provide expert advice. Young has a perfect strike rate on previous ASADA cases (according to Richard Ings)

September 2013 - LIB government in. Dutton becomes the new sports minister

February 2014 - Dutton contracts Garry Downes to review ASADA case

March 2014 - Operation Cobia runs to conclusion and final report is tabled. ASADA investigators recommend the case is dropped due to insufficient evidence. ASADA investigators are likely to have considered Young's expert opinion

April 2014 - Garry Gold Stamp finds that the players have a case to answer under the WADA Code. Downes may have thought there was enough evidence required (none) for an ADRVP finding, but it's probably more likely that the case was assessed against burden of proof requirements for the AFL tribunal or CAS

June 2014 - Essendon players issued with show cause notices

June 2014 - Speaking on SEN radio, McDevitt signals his intention to talk through potential deals with Essendon players, flagging reduced penalties for co-operation

August 2014 - Federal court

August 2014 - Speaking on Macquarie Radio, Mr Abbott said Labor's attempt to generate a short-term political distraction, as it was in "all sorts of trouble", had been "silly, squalid, sordid" and "absolutely pathetic"

August 2014 - Essendon chairman Paul Little tells 3AW's Neil Mitchell he "would love to engage with the Sports Minister... to find a circuit breaker" for the ongoing standoff with the AFL and ASADA

September 2014 - Senator Di Natale pushes for a senate inquiry into ASADA investigation - '“We should take a step back and decide what we want from the agency and how we want to resource it and whether we think the model we have got at the moment is the right model" - “There should be a review of how we conduct anti-doping.’’

October 2014 - WADA slams ASADA and Australian government after NRL deals are done - "WADA has determined that full scrutiny of the file revealed that the number of delays were directly the result of the lack of activity or decision by either ASADA or the Australian government. Nothing was done by ASADA to advance the matter following the completion of the ASADA investigation in November 2013 for many months. The Australian government decided, for reasons it considered appropriate, to appoint a retired judge (Downes) to review the ASADA files. It took some months for Downes to complete his task in early April 2014. There is no explanation for the continued inaction from ASADA following the receipt of the Downes report in April 2014 until steps were formally taken by ASADA in August 2014."

October 2014 - Tony Abbott on ASADA - "ASADA should do its job, it should do its job efficiently and effectively and it should resolve all of these matters as quickly as possible. We were told this was the blackest day in Australian sports and since then we've had all sorts of allegations swirling around, we've had all sorts of controversy, we've had all sorts of careers ruined and lives blighted. But it's still hard to see what exactly a lot of this was about. I say to ASADA get on, finish the job so that we can all move forward from this"

October 2014 - Fresh show cause notices issued

I think step one was to stall until January and await the Hird court case. Players not accepting deals was a real blow to ASADA it seems.

The bully boy stuff ASADA tried on Essendon might work on individual athletes with little financial backing. But attempting to bluff a multi-million dollar organisation without positive tests and with accusations backed by little evidence......different matter.

Dutton no longer the sports Minister. He has been moved to Immegration.

Susan Ley is now the Minister for Sport and Health

At least that removes a conflict of interest - You can't be Sports Minister and be on WADA's executive board.

Ah - Bruce's thread has been removed from BB - A mere couple of hours after I advised the HTB. that bruce will surely outlive his shelf life on BB - What a coincidence !

Not sure what all the foamers filling thread after thread with their misguided views and Essendon hate will do with their time once this saga is over.

The post count at BF will most surely plummet.

Either pontificate on how brilliant they were or lament on how corrupt the AFL and Essendon are. Or both.Rinse and repeat.

It was owned by an American company called BIG Internet Group, but in 2009 was sold (along with Big Cricket) to News Corp for a lazy $7.64m. If it's changed hands again since that point, I couldn't tell you, but it's certainly not within the means a middle-aged web dude. Speaking of which, Chief is just a guy named Adrian A******** who runs the site for a salary. Well, convinces footy fans to run the site for him for free, for a salary.
