It's Chili Bowl time in Tulsa, OK. There's a record 330 entries vying for the golden driller. Qualifying night 1 was won by Kyle Larson who drove from 6th in the C-Main to win, after wrecking in his qualifier heat. A total of 33 passes for position. Not bad. Kiwi Michael Pickens drove from 20th to 8th in the final, which I think puts him into a B-Main for Saturday night. Sammy Swindell won the 7th running of the Race of Champions.

The 29th Annual Chili Bowl was won this year by Rico Abreu. Rico passed last year's Chili Bowl champion Bryan Clauson on lap 26 and was never headed for the remainder of the 55 lap race. 2nd was Kevin Swindell, making it at least 6 years in a row Kevin has finished 2nd or better. 3rd place went to 2008 Chili Bowl winner Damion Gardner, who started 23rd in the feature. Kyle Larson finished 7th in the feature after spinning twice and having to go to the rear both times - not sure why he didn't get DQed for causing two cautions. Pittman, the 2013 WoO Sprintcar Champion, should consider himself a little unlucky after spinning because of lap cars that checked up for a caution whilst battling Abreu for the lead. Pittman managed to drive back through the field to 6th - had the best car IMO. Other unlucky guys were Christopher Bell (Should be in a good NASCAR team) and Chad Boat. Abreu has now confirmed that he has signed as a development driver for Chip Ganassi Racing and will compete this year in the NASCAR K&N East Series. Kiwi, Michael Pickens, was in a transfer position in his B-Main to make the final and looking very strong, before he rolled - the 60th car to flip in this years Chili Bowl. This year finished with a total of 61 flips, a new record.

If you have an hour to spare, someone has uploaded the A-Main onto Youtube:

Race starts at 5 minute mark, finishes at 42 minutes. Race starts heating up from lap 12 onwards.

It got heated post race between Larson and the Swindells, also (Continuing onto Twitter). Swindells being Swindells....

The Speedway world now turns its eyes to Australia for the 43rd running of the Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic. 107 entrants.

Unfair on Bulldog to generalise the "Swindells" IMO.
Kevin has attitude but hes generally ok, Sammy is a dickhead.

BTW how good was Kevins run from the back up to 2nd.

I agree that it probably was unfair to say that Kevin is the same as Sammy, but he does have a temper. His tweet about respecting the experienced drivers was interesting... If anyone would've gone near Kevin after he wrecked anyone, Sammy would've intervened (and did).

Kevin drove probably the smartest race of the 24 out there. Would've been interesting to see how he went if he didn't damage the shock early on.

Will take some beating this weekend too

Sweet and Haud will be good to watch as well.

That's really s**t. Made last year a lot more painful, so close.

In other news, a Davison of the James type just put the #007 Aston Martin on class pole at the Daytona 24. 5 pole in a row for James in the series

With the way the Nascar title is decided, he still may be able to win it as a part timer.

No he won't.A driver has to attempt to qualify for all races and can only get into The Chase on an exemption if they miss races [i.e illness like Vickers or the Tony Stewart incident last year].

An all Indycar-Nascar lineup of Scott Dixon, Tony Kanaan, Kyle Larson and Jamie McMurray win overall at the Daytona 24, Ryan Briscoe won his class with Corvette Racing, Van Gisbergen second in his class in a Porsche.

In speedway news, it looks as though the Darcy Ward saga may finally draw to a close soon - with a surprise ending. He is due to have his disciplinary hearing on January 30 (after 2 delays already) and news is coming out that he may be acquitted! The story is that although he failed a breath test, it is only used as an indicator and requires a blood sample for verification - and this didn't happen. If this comes off then he's certainly dodged a bullet.

In other speedway news, there is trouble for a number of Australian and other international riders with regards to visas and racing in the UK. A number of non EU riders, including Chris Holder and Troy Batchelor, have had their visas revoked due to an administrative issue to do with sponsorship. At the moment it still looks a big mess with no clear answer. It will severely weaken the competition and throw the plans of many clubs into disarray with many Australians in particularly competing over there.

A bit of action in the AMA Supercross series lately:

Chad Reed black flagged after this incident with Trey Canard. I'm not sure that there's ever been a black flag in the series before but Reed's lawyers are getting involved.

Reed feels particularly aggrieved when last year this incident was deemed acceptable.
