Research Finding First Names for 1920's VFA Grand Finals - A Rant

I'm still trying to find Atkinson as well, yet can't even find something that tells me what club he had played for.

Atkinson was listed as one of the old players at the start of 1926 and 1925....and then in 1924 I found

"and strong ruck man in Atkinson from Rochester"
FOOTBALL. (1924, April 3). The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848 - 1957), p. 6. Retrieved January 27, 2015, from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article1937047

Good find. I had written down that he had started at Brighton in 1924, but earlier today had read somewhere that he was new in 1925 (along with Friend) so was rather puzzled.

North Shore (North Sydney) website has R. Friend (not C. Friend) as playing in the 1921 premiership, but pretty clearly the same person as C. Friend who was named to play Victoria.

I can find no other reference to another person named friend in Shep.

But....(a short drive to the library later)....the brother of Raymond Charles Friend just happens to be called Clarence Randolph Friend. Born 1901 in Prahran

Ignoring the one source that says that friend came to Brighton from Shepparton...I think the story of RC Friend is pretty solid as both the NSW footballer and as the Tasmanian Footballer/Cricketer.

The Tasmanian papers refer to both C.Friend and R.Friend as the 'NSW aquisition' or the 'former NSW player'.

This would be Clarence getting married in 1926. Probably not very useful, though. Not sure where we're going with this one at the moment!

Mr & Mrs C. R. Friend had a son two years later and called it Raymond Charles. Close family!!

Yippee! It looks like we have a first initial for Atkinson. It's mentioned twice. I think I probably only started looking for him from 1925 onwards, made it a bit tougher than it needed to be.

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/4359858 (May 1924).

Permits Granted:- A. Atkinson, Rochester to Brighton.

I was working on a different angle. After 1927 where did Friend in Brighton play after he stopped playing there.I have not found any evidence he played on.

I have now found three references that say friend was recruited from Shep. but thinking more broadly, this may have been where he transferred from rather than where he played. He may have played permit bingo...Just speculation as another alternative.

I have Friend playing with Prahran as a forward in June 1924 (From St Kilda). He plays for the month and then seems to disappear.
Whether this is the same person or not...I have no idea.....

Not out of the question, that's for sure.

The first link does say "Friend a forward and ruck man from St. Kilda"
Friend was named in the forward pocket in the 1926 GF team, so could well have been the resting ruckman.

I haven't found anything yet that has him going to another club after 1927. I'll have another look at The Age in case there is some mention there.

Well a player called Friend in 1922 scored 2 goals in a game against Leopold for st Kilda. The prahran telegraph 11 august 1922 at page 2.Also he scored a goal for st Kilda in the junior league on 26 may 1922. Prahran telelgraph 26 may 1922 at page 2

In regards to Atkinson, there was an Albert Atkinson in Rochester in the electoral roll of 1919 and 1924

Should be him. We know Atkinson (a police constable) left for Port Fairy in 1927, if you can find one there from about then on, even better.

I have recorded most the notes made on Frank Alessio, (thanks). http://boylesfootballphotos.net.au/Frank Alessio
I will leave it uncertain, but I agree that the 1898 Alessi is our man.
Same as with my previous post, I just spotted this while looking for something else, and may as well include it:-

http://news.google.com.au/newspapers?nid=MDQ-9Oe3GGUC&dat=19280510&printsec=frontpage&hl=en

"F. C. Alessio, Richmond to Brunswick" (May 1928). So he went back to his old club. It was probably still the other F Alessio (younger one in the photo, who went to Hawthorn in 1931).

There is also Herb Friend who played a few games before the war for Melbourne and StKilda
http://demonwiki.org/tiki-index.php?page=Herb+Friend

He could have been early 20s before the war and 35-36 in 1926...A longshot

Michael Riley
I presume you were aware that George Hunt trained with Footscray in 1928?

I'm still trying to find out anything about Friend leaving Brighton in 1928. He obviously wasn't still at the club, but if he didn't go to another club it is going to make it very difficult.

Reports indicate that he copped some injuries in1927 and I could not find reports of a Friend having played in as or sa or new after and our Tasmanian friend

It's looking very much like the Arthur story, where he left Brighton without it getting any kind of a mention, and without any permit news. Unless he shows up at another club somewhere it's not looking good.

Just on a couple of players from the Brunswick 1925 Grand Final team that are only "pencilled in" on the website:-
Michael McMahon
Permits: M. McMahon, Fitzroy to Brunswick (VFL Record 1925 Rd. 6).
Michael/Mike McMahon played for Fitzroy 1924, 1928-29. http://afltables.com/afl/stats/players/M/Mike_McMahon.html

John D 'Frankie' Fitzgerald
Permits: J. Fitzgerald, Brunswick to Fitzroy (VFL Record 1926 Rd. 9).
http://afltables.com/afl/stats/players/J/John_Fitzgerald0.html Height:160 cm Weight:58 kg
Certainly rover sized! Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers has him as "John F. J. Fitzgerald" and "Ex-Brunswick."
