You are right. They should be told that if they play the provisional suspension no longer applies - so no backdating beyond the NAB challenge.
Absolutely spot on. How dare they believe they can dictate to the competition. Fair dinkum.

So they get 2 years but because they didn't play (because there was no games) for 6 months from Sept 2013-March 2014 and Sept 2014-March 2015, that's 12 months automatically taken off their penalty? then another 12 months off for the next 2 summer breaks as a 'good behaviour don't do it again' bond? wtf?? Or is that not what they're doing it and I've just had a bad dream?

It possible playing will affect where a penalty start. Essendon, I imagine, want a guarantee that won't be affected by playing. Problem is will WADA go with that.

so why the outrage? Why shouldnt the players be prepared to sit out the NAB challenge if it meant their entire season could be in jeopardy?
You are overlooking the fact that they are essentially blackmailing the AFL. "Guarantee the penalties will be backdated, or we won't be playing".

from what i can see there is only one line in the article that says they will boycott the NAB Challenge:

But the players will not take the field unless a backdating guarantee is given.

this is not a quote from anyone just what the journo's whacked in. presumably they would have been given this indication from someone but pretty average headline for only having 1 line about it.

just shoddy journalism which we have come to expect from our media

Much ado about nothing - AFL decides if the provisional suspension can be lifted - Players decide if they play.

How dare you attempt to depredate this fine thread with your prudent assessments

Actually protecting themselves in this case. If they can't guarantee any backdating playing can affect when a ban starts. Pure self protection.

blackmailing?

*en lol. Give it a spell. If it was to affect any backdating of penalties then they are well within their rights to decide not to compete.

reading this thread is hilarious.

The outrage. The hate.

What's funny is a few days ago you were all outraged that EFC would seek to play the NAB challenge. Now you're all outraged that they may seek NOT to play the NAB challenge :D
What is really funny is how all of you Essendon supporters are not outraged by what Hird/Dank ect ect have done to your club.

It is everyones elses fault except Jimmy.

You've heard of weekend detention for minor crimes? Essendon are plumping for the opposite, where they will happily serve their suspensions Monday to Friday during daylight hours and get release for good behaviour on weekends.

So if they are provisionally banned and can't play how are they going to boycott Nab series?
I think the issue is they don't see the NAB cup as in-competition, so therefore the penalties should still be backdated to November (when INs were issued). However, they want the AFL to guarantee this is the case if they play.

I dont think they are. I think theyre asking if by playing in the NAB they will lose any backdating. If the AFL agree this would happen then they should miss the NAB challenge, unless the AFL can give them assurances this wouldnt happen

What some people are missing out here is that the boycott is not just impacting the 18 Essendon listed players involved in the ASADA issues but another 26 listed and rookie players who are not. By "boycotting" you are not helping those 26 whatsoever get some match practice etc.. in fact it's another sign of arrogance and up yours to the AFL and disrespect to the teams they'll be playing in their 3 NAB challenge games. Given a few top up players to cover any of those 26 injured you could easily field a legit team for the pre-season comp and might be handy in the club assessing some of these top up players and getting the non impacted list playing together because their could be chance this is the list they'll be stuck with in season proper if suspensions arise.

Keep sticking up that finger to the AFL... enjoy your 2016 draw as the AFL might decide to give you no Friday nights... might decide the ANZAC day clash needs a refresh... might make you play interstate 10 times.. etc etc...

What kind of arrogant campaigners are they to think they would be able to just ignore the actual suspension part of the provisional suspension without losing any benefit of the provisional suspension.

The fact that they are even asking the question is disgraceful.

What next? Will they be asking to serve their suspension in chunks - Monday - Thursday 6pm - 8am?

how is players trying to ensure they get the minimum penalty sticking it up the AFL?

Look at the author.. Slobbo name is listed..

Suspect that game be called an exhibition game, after all it's using a set of rules only used for one or two games every few years. As exhibition does not count.
They had to get commission approval to play which suggests it wasn't seen as a exhibition game

Theyre not IMO. Theyre simply asking if playing in the NAB will mean their provisional suspension wont be taken into account when determining the start of their ban. If the AFL say it they cant be sure then the palyers vote not to jeopardise their season for what is affectively practice games

So if they play in the NAB, just what exactly do they think they're provisionally suspended from?

What do they actually think a provisional suspension is? Do they really think the concept is that hard to understand that asking the question wouldn't be seen as arrogance?
