Reep while you are in a question answering mood, what's your impression of Australian qualified lawyers who spend decent periods of time in the London office of either Magic Circle or US firms? Would you consider them to be more or less employable than say a lawyer of similar PQE level whose spent all his/her time working in Perth top-tier firms?

I've been hearing on the grapevine from a couple of London trained colleagues that they were asked to take PQE discounts when applying for Australian jobs. This is despite the two year training program and College of Law course required to get admitted in the UK, which made me think that Aussie firms may be less interested in lawyers who have worked in London than before (presumably due to over-specialisation and lack of local knowledge).

sorry on way out but will answer tomorrow.

since i am a qualified lawyer and have been for 20 years, i shall answer tomorrow also

Any mature age or "later lawyers" have any insights into the path they chose after qualifying?

Did you restart your career down a grad path?

Move sideways in current commercial setting?

Hang out a shingle?

Went military?

Interested to hear what you or any other lawyers recommend for someone who started in their late 30's

FWIW you can't hang out your shingle until you have an unrestricted practising certificate (and your ability to obtain that will differ pending your jurisdiction, AFAIK all jurisdictions require a period of supervised practice).

We have a bloke who came to law mature age (big firm for SA). He's fun.

Vic is two years supervised. How long is it in SA?

Do any of the lawyers here deal with wills or are able to help me out with what to expect time frame wise..
grandmother passed away October or so last year, late November my folks got a letter advising that myself and my brothers had been left some money and to provide bank details. Did so and still waiting, don't want to seem ungrateful or anything just wondering if there is a time frame these things normally run to so we know how it all works and when we should get it

Can be a bit of a "how long is a piece of string" question.

The letter likely informed you who were the Executors, if you're concerned it would be best to get in touch with them

Thanks for the reply...I figured that might be the case.

I never saw the letter, just passed my details onto the folks. Will just keep waiting and see

So here's a question.

Do employers care where you undertake your PLT? College of Law, ANU, Leo Cussen etc etc?

I'm at that point now where in need to enrol in one. I was leaning towards ANU but I don't really care too much.

No, most will put of the bigger employers will put you through it themselves.

Leo Cussen is probably the best of those if you haven't got a job already though, know quite a few people who got jobs following their placement for Leo Cussen.

I did college of law through my employer so can only really speak to that and it was manageable workload wise.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. They're all just a means to an end; I doubt much if any weight will be placed on which one you go with.

I went with College of Law because it fitted in best with my employment.

I wont have the luxury of having an employer do it for me so I need to make the choice.

Yeah it looks like its all online too.
Lol that's what I thought when I chose it. The fact is if you did it online you'll end up doing more work and it's harder. You are still required to come in for i think it was 18 on site days or something like that. However it's more flexible in that you don't have to be there everyday 9-5.

Being in Perth its going to be a little hard to be on site in Melbourne for 18 days :p

Only College of Law seems to have Perth offices.

Seems to be generally accepted the Leo Cussen is the best option for non-grads.

Quite a few decent firms recruiting straight from there.
