Drugs/doping in AFL

Could be good, someone like Clint jones or Mitch brown will get call ups. Bad for sandy but for the players it's a great opportunity
So I nailed it.

Congrats to both

With Essendon bringing players in to top up their team for the NAB pre-season competition and potentially the actual AFL season, you would have to wonder what questions they would be asking of the players they are interviewing for these positions:
  1. Are you prepared to hang an Essendon approved photo of James Hird in your lounge and bedroom?
  2. Will you (and spouse if applicable) sign documentation agreeing to name your first born after James Hird?
  3. Are you willing to suspend logic, reasoning and sense of what is fair if you come to Essendon?
  4. Do you have a fear of needles?
  5. Are you prepared to be involved in any player enhancement programs the club may institute, whether they be at the club, off site, or conducted in your home by visiting Essendon conditioning, medical staff, or underworld crime figures as nominated by the club?
  6. Are you comfortable with signing waivers absolving Essendon of any blame for any situation that may arise in the future?
  7. If so, are you happy to sign 52 blank waiver forms?
  8. Are you prepared in your own time prior to joining Essendon, to spend the time required to perfect the arrogant Essendon swagger
  9. Are you willing to suspend rational thought and appreciation of the rule of law, if you come to Essendon?
  10. If you are directed, are you prepared to drink Kool Aid?
If so welcome, we look forward to you being part of the club.

Number 4 made me laugh out loud.

That's a bit harsh, Magner is at least an honest hard-working type. Maybe not quite the skills, but I reckon he's not far off deserving a few more AFL games.
He and Neeld apparently hated each other, which can't have helped his Melbourne career, but let's be honest, his kicking was godawful and - unlike Jonesy - he isn't quick.

In fact, the thing that stands out to me from those top ups is that kicking obviously hasn't be a priority; Petrenko, Jones and Magner are all substandard kicks, and Polkinghorne and Clisby aren't a whole lot better.

AFL reports that Zaharakis injures a knee in a tackle from a top-up player.

In the same report they say that another top up (Hartley) failed the medical and has been fired before he was hired. It would be ironic if that was for a drug offence!

if what is in bold true, then thats what i'm worried about when we play the bombers in the nab challenge.

Playing against this rag tag bunch is probably no diff than playing against a bunch of raw boned recruits trying to impress.
Surely we wont end up with any wanna be heroes trying to impress mates by smashing Nick Riewoldt or anything like that.
Just as much chance being injured in a tackle by Judd than some delisted bloke getting another chance. But I do understand you being concerned sammm. Its seems all a bit half arsed.
Personally im against the Bombers playing at all.
id be happier with a scratch match Vs Sandy or someone like that.
If Bombers cant field a team then tuff t***ies!!! They shouldnt be able to play.

With the cocaine scandal starting to gain legs and involving 2 NRL and 1 AFL clubs, how long until it all comes out that Essendon are behind all of this? Are Essendon club personnel study trips overseas, really drug running trips????? :)

* you Essendon. * around the rest of the competition whilst you "fake" a scratch match with your players who shouldnt even be ******* training whilst under "provisional suspension".

* you Essendon for dragging this s**t out for over two years now instead of owning up about your corrupt bullshit nature. Your players would have copped maybe 6 months off if you just owned up and came clean and you could be entering this year with a clean slate but noooo you just have to continue to be a bunch of arrogant campaigners who could do no wrong, except cheat the system, cheat your own players and put them at risk and then expect everyone else to bend over to accommodate your bullshit.

We get shat on constantly by dipshits on the main board, our entire existence questioned by *wad supporters of artificial expansion teams and those drifting along on the success of premierships won before they were even born.. and we have done nothing but abide by the rules and spirit of the game to the letter yet these pricks just continue to throw it in everyones faces.

* em all!

what is quite funny, is that when Magner was part of our VFL aligned team, some either on here and on saintsatonal kept saying we should pick Magner up.

He's hard as a cat's head, and a great ball-winner, so as an in-and-under type he's useful.

His skills are not AFL standard though.

The problem is also half the media is littered with bombers supporters who have assisted in the victim
stuff too ...just waiting in a few years time when a player encounters health issues as a result of the
Hird era and if Paul Little is not around the bell will TOLL at bomberland.

I think the AFL are hitting the mark here. As has been said in the top-ups preview thread, the Essendon tummy jabbers have tried to play their AFL probable side against Williamstown. The AFL have effectively made a statement saying "the whole footballing world can see through your lies and deception and we won't let you get away with it. If you want to give guys who have not been served infraction notices match practice, then let them travel to Morwell. But if you sit out the game against the Saints then you must sit out altogether." All credit to the AFL. It needs to go one step further, and apply to the coaches and support staff as well. James Hird, his assistants, and his medical staff should be made to coach at Morwell. In fact any failure to provide match day services (forgetting about the actual standard of play) not to an AFL standard should attract a heavy fine. I would hate to think that our staff end up carrying an extra load on the day because of the Williamstown debacle.

That is usually the case, that in theory if all sides agree an athlete could continue to train until the association makes the decision (and during appeal too). But in the vast majority of cases, its in the athlete's best interest to stop, and/or the club wants nothing to do with the bad press associated with being a cheat.

If the players are found guilty and the punishment is effective from the notices, they would lose any achievements from the period of suspension. But that doesn't prevent you training. Technically they should all be allowed to play also, however if they play games then get a ban, the results of the games played would have to be affected. The AFL doesn't want that, so in part protecting their situation they've cut a deal with the Bombers to sit out.

Credit to Jackson Merrett by the way. In the midst of all this, from what I gather he's effectively crossed the picket line by insisting on playing as he doesn't want to sit and watch games in order to protect the identities of others who potentially cheated.

Does that mean Saad could have trained with us until his ban was announced, or was that different due to the positive test?
