Hawks hand Croad new deal

SPRING is the perfect time to back a long shot, and Hawthorn has taken a punt on an outside chance by offering premiership defender Trent Croad a new one-year contract.

There had been significant doubt whether the Hawks would take a risk on Croad, who had an operation recently to fuse several bones in his left foot.
Croad is back training at the club's Waverley Park base, is walking pain-free and hopes to start running early next year.
Leading sports medico Peter Larkins said Hawthorn was being extremely supportive of Croad, but he doubted whether the premiership full-back would play again.

Croad return a 'bonus' in Hawks' 2010 hopes

By Luke Holmesby 5:41 PM Tue 27 October, 2009
HAWTHORN coach Alastair Clarkson concedes a fully fit Trent Croad would be a "bonus" for the club as the key defender attempts to resurrect his career after missing the entire 2009 season through injury.

TRENT Croad's hopes of playing football again have hit a major hurdle.

A shattered Croad will spend the Christmas break contemplating his future after scans this week revealed his troublesome foot was not improving.
The Hawthorn premiership defender, who missed the 2009 season because of three operations on the foot he broke in the 2008 Grand Final, agreed to a new one-year deal in October.
Croad recently said he was well ahead of schedule after the latest operation, which fused several bones in his left foot.

Crunch time looms for Croad and his injured foot

TRENT Croad's future will become clearer by the end of the month when the Hawks hope their veteran defender can accelerate his rehabilitation from major foot surgery.

Croad did not play a match in 2009, having required three operations on the foot he broke in the 2008 grand final. His progress through this pre-season has been slow, prompting suggestions the 29-year-old was considering retirement.

Hawks football manager Mark Evans said the defender would continue a limited program when training resumes this week, with the player and club hopeful of lifting his recovery later this month.

Evans didn't mention retirement but indicated Croad could have a tough decision to face if his recovery stalled.

What a shame, was always hoping we'd see him come back but yes, I did still have that feeling he wouldn't :(

Good luck, buddy.
