Went to a couple of games today.

Firstly Gumeracha v Sedan-Cambria. First time visit to Gumeracha and it was an interesting trip & venue. It's long way from the southern suburbs!
Huge result with Sedan-Cambria winning by 5 goals, their first win since 2013. In last year's corresponding game, Gumeracha won by 17 goals on the way to a 9-7 season & 4th place on the ladder. Sedan-Cambria's closest result last season was a 27 point loss to Birdwoood in R4.

Gumeracha was beaten in most areas of the ground. Sedan's midfield led by its captain Ryan Davies (No.1) and ably supported by Dene Steele (11), Steven Kain (6) and ruckman Jace Rules (25) controlled the game. Gum's Ruckman no. 15 (no name in the record, but I think was Matthew Armstrong) played a lone hand, taking a few telling marks & doing plenty of the heavy work.

Gum missed a couple of shots in the first qtr to be down 1-4 to SC 2-2 at Qtr time. The 2nd qtr. kicking with the wind, Sedan booted 6 goals while keeping Gum goalless to go in at half time 7-4-46 to Gum 2-6-18. 10mins into the 2nd qtr the game got a little fiery with Gum's no.25 (Craig Banks in the record) copping a red card.

Gum's coach Quentin Graham, wasn't happy at 1/2 time & they came out firing but just couldn't find a winning forward. They broke even kicking 2-1 a piece. With the wind & rain being a factor, Gum could only add one more goal in the last qtr to go down 5-8-38 to Sedan-Cambria 10-6-66.

Best forward was a livewire no.26 for SC, Phil Hall with 3 or 4 goals. He was a headache for Gum who couldn't quite find the right match up for him. Gum seemed to have a lot of heavy set players who seemed to struggle handling the ball.

With Kangarilla coming off the bye, Gumeracha has a chance to redeem themselves next week, but on what I saw today they will need to improve a lot.

The second game I saw was Hahndorf hosting Mt Barker. Game started at 4-50pm so I was able to get there mid way through the 2nd qtr where Hahndorf was leading 4-6 to 2-7. Again pretty wet conditions with a fine mist pervading the ground. Mt Barker missed a few easy shots including one from about 15m out. It was a costly miss as the ball went coast to coast with Hahndorf scoring a quick goal. At half time the Magpies led 6-6 to the Barkeroos 3-9.

Mt Barker's goal scoring woes continued in the 3rd qtr when they could only manage 1-5 to be 4-14-38 to Hahndorf 8-7-55. A few of Mt Barker's players seemed to kick & hope. A lot of wasted disposals which just killed them as Hahndorf capitalised.

In the end Hahndorf just made the most of their opportunities to finish 24 point winners with 12-10-82 to Mt Barker 7-16-58. Hahndorf full forward Darcy Hourigan kicked a bag including 4 in the 2nd half. His accuracy was a major difference as Mt Barker squandered several chances in front of goal. Jarryn Male was the best for Hahndorf winning the Anzac Day medal. Mt Barker was unlucky with their goal kicking & if they can fix their conversion rate they will win a few games before long.

Highest score in DIV 1 was the 12-10-82 scored by Hahndorf. It was also the biggest winning margin of 23 points. All matches were reasonably tight where there wasn't much between the teams for most of the game. No team in DIV 1 other than Hahndorf scored more than 9 goals for the day. Certainly the rain played a huge factor, but some of the teams had plenty of shots (eg: Ironbank 5-15...Mt Barker 7-16) but struggled with accuracy.

Some interest in Division 2 (R4 May 2nd) this week with the four bottom teams playing each other. The four teams: Sedan-Cambrai, Meadows, Gumeracha & Kangarilla have won one game between them in the first three rounds. Sedan-Cambrai are celebrating their 30th anniversary this week at home against Meadows, so it is a big day for the Magpies. They'll be very confident after a strong win away to Gumeracha. After a winless 2014, who would have thought they could be 2-2 after 4 games. Meadows are yet to be pumped by a massive amount like the other three times have copped so far. So they should start slight favourites, especially as this will be a 0-4 start to the season if they lose.

Kangy & Gumeracha are playing to keep off the bottom and get their season back on track. A loss to either team and any chance of being a final's contender is over. Gumeracha could not possibly play any worse than they did on the weekend, so we'd expect a response after losing to Sedan-Cambrai.

Of course the big game in DIV 2 is the clash of the unbeaten teams Nairne-Bremer and Kersbrook. These two teams have the best three forwards in the comp so it could be a shoot out. NB's Wade Hancock (17 goals this season) and Chris Ladhams (9) versus Kersbrook's Brad Lees (17).

DIVISION 1
Round 4 REVIEW

Echunga 17-4-106 d Blackwood 12-9-81
Same number of scoring shots, but great goal kicking by Echunga, (3rd time this season they have been very accurate) contributed to a strong win. Echunga led by a point at half time, 8-1 to 7-6 and 9 points at 3/4 time. So Blackwood was in the contest until Echunga banged on 6 goals in the last quarter. The Woods have been very competitive in every game and have another big test this week versus the undefeated Torrens Valley. Reigning premier Echunga are going along nicely and will meet Hahndorf in the match of the round this week.

Torrens Valley 16-9-105 d Ironbank 11-13-79
Battle of the big spenders. Coach Andrew Jarman has some problems at Ironbank. Some big names in Hitchcock, De Visser and Motlop on the list but the team has yet to produce the sort of footy expected at the start of the season. Only had the one win - over bottom team Onkas Valley in R1. With Lobethal next, they won't get any respite. This Saturday TV play Blackwood, whose two losses have been to 2014 Grand Finalists Uraidla/Echunga. Blackwood will give them a contest.

Mt Barker 12-11-83 d Onka Valley 10-4-64
Mt Barker got their season back on track. Some good signs against Hahndorf last week and followed it up with a 'must' win against Onkas. Barkeroos have a big chance to put together consecutive wins as they are playing Mt Lofty who is coming off a 15 goal hiding. A 2-3 start would put Mt Barker back into the pack vying for 4th/5th finish. Onkas hosts an undefeated team in Uraidla and on current form is looking at an 0-5 start.

Lobethal 23-22-160 d Mt Lofty 11-4-70
Surprise huge win by Lobethal. Lofty got within 15 points of the undefeated Torrens Valley the previous week, had a win on the board and a percentage of plus 50% so their form was solid. Lobethal was embarrassed by Hahndorf a fortnight ago and only beat bottom team Onkas by 17 points last week. I expected this game to go down to the wire. The size of the win suggests Lobethal are a lot better than they've been playing. Lobethal, with a massive percentage boost and now in 4th place, travel to Ironbank this Saturday and will start warm favourites. Lofty have a must win engagement with Mt Barker. After such a huge loss they will need to regroup quickly or they will drop to ninth if they lose to Mt Barker.

Uraidla 9-9-63 d Hahndorf 9-2-56
Turned out to be the match of the round. Pretty close all day, with 10 points about the biggest margin at any stage. Handoff spearhead Hourigan kicked another 4, to bring his year's total to 14. These two teams should finish in the top 3/4. We'll find out more about Hahndorf this week when they play the reigning premier Echunga. Uraidla plays bottom team Onka Valley this week so should maintain their unbeaten status.

R4 REVIEW

Bridgewater 8-16-64 d Birdwood 8-6-54
After being relegated from DIV 1 Bridgewater, predictably, have quickly established themselves as one of the top teams in the comp. Former Sturt/South Adelaide midfielder John McDonald is probably leading the Mail Medal at the moment having been Bridgewater's best player the last 3 games. Forward Steve Smith has kicked 13 goals in 4 games. Birdwood led by 8 points at half time but were over run in the 2nd half. Birdwood has probably established itself as the 4th best in the comp as their first four games included 3 against the top teams, having lost to Bridgewater, Kersbrook & Nairne Bremer. Their only win was a 9 goal victory against Meadows. Birdwood have the bye this week then play the 3 bottom teams so expect them to string some wins together. Bridgewater have a top-of-the-table battle with Nairne Bremer this week. The winner will remain undefeated. Should be a cracker.

Meadows 16-17-113 d Sedan Cambrai 7-7-49
Meadows got their season back on track to win their first game. They dominated the game kicking seven goals in the third quarter to break it open. The Dawes kicked nine goals between them with Chad Dawes booting six. Sedan Cambrai have obviously improved on last year and was probably hoping to score back-to-back wins after accounting for Gumeracha last week. But this loss shows they are still a fair way from being a finals contender. They've got some good small midfielders in captain Ryan Davies, Dene Steele and Steve Kain and a couple of good goal kickers in Phil Hall and Andrew Curyer. The Magpies have another home game, playing Kangarilla who are coming off their first win against Gumeracha. A win this week and they will be a respectable 2-3 - a massive upside after losing all 16 games in 2014. Meadows visits Kersbrook this week, with the Brookers coming off their first loss.

Kangarilla 14-9-93 d Gumeracha 12-13-85
Gumeracha were definitely better than the previous week when they suffered a 5 goal loss to Sedan Cambrai. Scores were level at half time and the Gums actually hit the front in the third quarter. They had a chance to go a few goals up but scored three consecutive behinds. Kangy settled and held on well. Matthew Armstrong played a cracker for Gumeracha and his ruck duel with Kangy's Jordan Noble was a highlight of the game. Armstrong played well last week and would be leading Gum's B&F. Recruit Shawn Mansell has been a handy acquisition for Gums, running through the lines and kicking goals from the midfield. But Gumeracha have too few contributors and has a date with Macclesfield this week. Kangarilla was missing a few on the weekend and should be boosted by the inclusion of Matt Spencely and a couple of others. They are getting better but this week(v Sedan Cambrai) is a must win. They definitely played a stronger Gumeracha than Sedan-Cambrai did so hard to gauge where they are at. Should be a cracker at Sedan this week. Massive prize for the winner as they could find themselves in the top five as Birdwood has the bye & Meadows plays Kersbrook.

Nairne Bremer 17-10-112 d Kersbrook 13-10-88
This was a clash of the titans with NB having a bit too much fire power up forward. Chris Ladhams & Jamahl Liddle kicked 4 each while leading goal kicker Wade Hancock booted 2. Kersbrook's Brad Lees kicked 5 to take him to 22 for the year. After three big wins Kersbrook were probably expecting to go better than they did but came off second best. NB are the real deal and probably premiership favourites atm. Big game with fellow undefeated team Bridgewater this week. After this Saturday there will only be one team left undefeated. Kersbrook host Meadows this week and should enjoy a big win.

All the same as you except. Bridgey to beat Nairne. Was very tempted to go for SC against Kangy but after hearing the interview with the Kangarilla president during the week it sounds like they have some really good numbers and close playing group so think that Kangarilla will get up.

Where did you hear the interview with the Kangarilla president?

Unfortunately Kangarilla lost a couple of players this week due to work commitments. Bugger!

The President - Tony Virgo is one of the best blokes I met in footy. He and his wife are always around the club. At training every week. His son plays for South Adelaide but fortunately has been playing with Kangarilla the last two weeks in their wins against Gumeracha and Sedan Cambrai.

What I like most is his commitment to not pay huge money to mercenaries. His view is (and shared by everyone at Kangy) is to provide a great club with a good social atmosphere that players want to be a part of. They pay some money but nothing compared to clubs in first division & some others in 2nd division. It's all about keeping the club going, ensuring its not chasing its tail and volunteers aren't working behind the scenes trying to raise the cash that goes out the door with players who are only in it for the cash. Club is in a healthy position off the field - the biggest problem is getting a full team for the two's. Kangy only had 18 available on Saturday. Unfortunately it was costly - going down by 4 points.

The seniors win against Sedan Cambrai was a testament to the hard work the president & co have put in to encourage blokes to join Kangarilla. A 13 goal win with 10 in the last quarter. Puts Kangarilla in 5th place at the moment. Not getting complacent but at least the club can be a genuine contender for maybe 4th/5th for the rest of the season. (Same stage last season Kangarilla had lost all four games by an average of over 17 goals, with three by over 140 points).

Bus trip back from Cambrai Oval was a good experience. Some of those college blokes knew a few songs & chants to keep us entertained. A few ales enjoyed and well earned!

I must admit I was surprised by the Bridgewater result. A 55 point margin but more importantly 48 shots to 23 (25-23-173 to 19-4-118). Could have been a 100 point loss if not for Nairne Bremer's accuracy/Bridgewater's inaccuracy. Nairne kicked 9 straight in the second half! (10.4 at HT)

It seems they (Bridgewater) set themselves for this one as they only beat Birdwood by 10 points the previous week - A team both Nairne Bremer & Kersbrook have beaten by 11 goals and 9 goals respectively.

Although Kangarilla was very much depleted in the first game against Kersbrook with several players unavailable (Reserves had only 19 including 4 Bridgewater players), I felt Kersbrook was a better side than Bridgewater. Kersbrook won by 25 goals while the following week Kangarilla was only 29 points down in the 3rd quarter v Bridgewater before the Raiders pushed it out to a 59 point margin at the end...admittedly it was a very wet day.

Nairne might have got ahead of themselves and were probably vulnerable after a big win against Kersbrook. At this stage it's still hard to tell but it appears Bridgewater has taken over flag favouritism.......o_O

Results from R5
2nd May
Uraidla 11-12-78 d Onka Valley 6-6-42
Uraidla's highest score for the season. Remarkably Uraidla has only had a average of 37 points scored against them while averaging only 57 points themselves, suggesting they play a pretty congested style of game. Uraidla remain undefeated and should win again this week.

Torrens Valley 15-8-98 d Blackwood 9-11-65
The Lions remain undefeated after a good win against the Woods. Blackwood were only 2 points down at 1/2 half time and still well in the contest at 3/4 time, being within 16 points. Six goals in the last quarter, and Torrens went on to win by 33 points. Torrens have a danger games this week with its visit to Lobethal.
The Woods have another tough game against the new giant killers in Hahndorf.

Mt Barker 11-8-74 d Mt Lofty 10-7-67
Mt Barker won their 2nd consecutive game in the battle of the "Mounts". Lofty led by 9 points at half time, restricting the Barkeroos to only 3-2, but in the third quarter, Mt Barker gained the ascendancy and held on to win by 7 points. Lofty put up a better effort than the previous week but still fell short. This week they come up against top team Uraidla, so its hard to see them adding to their one win. Mt Barker has another winnable game this week against Ironbank.

Ironbank 14-14-98 d Lobethal 13-11-89
The one upset of the round was Ironbank's home win against Lobethal who was coming off a massive 90 point win against Mt Lofty. Lobethal led by 2 points at 3/4 time but were over run by a desperate Ironbank who got their season back on track. In round six, Lobethal host the undefeated Torrens Valley, while Ironbank have a chance to enter the top 5 if they can beat Mt Barker this Saturday.

Hahndorf 14-9-93 d Echunga 9-16-70
Hahndorf made the most of its home ground advantage under lights by accounting for Echunga. A six goal opening quarter set the Magpies up and they were able to hold the lead throughout to eventually win by 4 goals. Uncharacteristically Echunga kicked poorly, after recording 17-4 last week. Last year's bottom team Hahndorf's only 2 losses have been to the undefeated pair of Uraidla and Torrens Valley. The win against Echunga confirmed they are genuine contenders and they should win again this week in its home game encounter versus Blackwood. Echunga hosts Onka Valley this week and should hold third place on the ladder with a win against the bottom team.

From the Geelong Advertiser - big shake up of local footy.

Something the SA Hills League might need to consider in the next few years. A salary cap around the $80,000 mark would reasonable for Division 1. Maybe $60,000 for Division 2.

http://m.geelongadvertiser.com.au/sport/localfooty/local-footy-bosses-to-crack-down-on-salary-cap-cheats/story-fnjuhsge-1227355492990

LOCAL footy clubs will be hit with crippling punishments if they attempt to cheat their way around the incoming salary caps and points systems.

That was the blunt warning from AFL Barwon boss Lee Hartman yesterday after AFL Victoria unveiled its long-awaited equalisation plan to curb skyrocketing player payments.

Sanctions for breaches range from heavy fines, loss of premiership points, suspension from finals and even banishment from competitions in extreme cases.

The ground-breaking changes, which are in a testing phase until the end of this season and will be tailored for each league across the state, come into effect next year.

AFL Barwon is aiming towards a salary cap of $135,000 for Geelong Football League clubs, $100,000 for Bellarine clubs and $80,000 for GDFL teams.

Those figures, along with the points cap for each local league, will be confirmed by the end of the home-and-away season.
