I just noticed a worrying trend before 2013 and 2014 where we haven't managed to do so well at the National Draft.

2012 - Tom Temay (35) – Dud! Not even highlighted on Wikipedia

2011 - Saw Rowe (44) – Don’t mind him. Nice guy

2010 – Patrick McCarthy (36) – No physicality. Ordinary player

2010 – Luke Mitchell (42) – Stephen Kernahan?! What a spud

2009 – (No 2nd Rounder)! What a waste!

2008 - (Traded for Robbie Warnock)! FFS! WHAT A JOKE

2007 – (No 2nd Rounder)! What a waste!

2006 – PP Shaun Hampson (17) – Lets be honest. His first few years he looked terrible and we were lying to ourselves about him coming good the whole time. Traded him for effectively, Sam Docherty (a God)

2006 – Shaun Grigg – (19) Never liked him. Very squinty! For an ‘inside’ player his skills were bad. We would have delisted him anyway

2005 – Paul Bower (20) – Don’t remind me. Worst kick ever and s**t tatts

2004 – Adam Hartlett (24) – How bad was this bloke? Oh cool, you kicked 8 goals in an underage SANFL match. You superhero

2003 – (no 2nd Rounder)! Where did it go?

2002 – (Traded for Barnaby French) Was OK, but a second rounder? Really?

2001 – (Traded for Justin Murphy) Him again. Thanks for your two years of softness, you crab.

2000 – Blake Campbell (31) – Actually really liked our Blakey. Reckon he’s now the store manager of a Dan Murphys somewhere in the suburbs? Maybe Ringwood?

1999 – (Traded for Michael Mansfield) Imagine how psychologically terrifying it would be walking into the club that damaged you 5 years ago in a Grand Final. Wow

1998 (Traded for Matthew Lappin) Loved the bloke. Deadset legend

1997 Adam Chatfield (23) – MIA. Anyone heard from him?

1996 (Traded for Mick McGuane) Did wonders for Gisborne FC. Champion

1995 (No 2nd Rounder) Again

1994 Mark Cullen – Mark, if you’re out there, we’d really like to get in touch

1993 Simon Beaumont – Mr 8 Goals himself. Best spud ever.

Not great reading. Think we need to get some more good 2nd Rounders into the team ASAP or it could be more bad news.

No club stuffs up that many picks. The top clubs have consistently shown that there is talent in the later rounds.

Definantly a development issue, although many of those players hung around for a fair bit and were serviceable (Bower, Hampson, Rowe etc).

Yup massive waste. Great job OP in summing it up.

What's the answer? Formula should be:

First Rounder: Pick the elite guy
Second Rounder: Pick the safe guy - get a best 22 player in
Third Rounder (and beyond): take the gambles, draft projects, look for upside

That way we get 1 potential star and 1 best 22 in each year. 1 in 3 years we may hit the jackpot with our third rounder for another star.

We done good in rookies anyway.

A fair few of those comments gave me a laugh.

The gist of what you are saying is not lost on any Blues supporter, we have never fully embraced the draft and our onfield efforts have been poorer because of it.

Thankfully, it seems that the penny has finally dropped and a more thorough plan involving research & planning is being implemented.

Kidding yourself about grigg. He was a decent kid for us and it would have been good for us if he stayed , a 5th midfielder type.

Still going at the tigers, who have been a better club than us the last few years.

We traded him for Collins...

You know what.

It is not just about nailing second round draft picks.

It is about nailing every draft pick.

If the right people are in place with the right support. That is important. You might have the right people and wrong support, or the wrong people and the right support. You need both. Big time.

Past few years we've got Docherty, Everitt, Viojo Rainbow all with second round picks. Things have changed and I'm even confident Giles will have a positive impact soon.
Anything to report on how he is travelling at training these days?

Another chicken versus egg question. Would these picks have been guns at a different and more successful club with better development programs?

Very easy to pot blokes with the benefit of hindsight, especially when it is our club who should shoulder most of the blame.

Great thread, would read again.
Attracted Sheik of course who has been conspicuous by his absence due to the winning vibe of late.

It doesn't read great but let's have a look at things:

2010: #34 McCarthy
Next 5 picks: Newton, Young, Horlin-Smith, Hallahan, Taylor
One can argue that anything was better than McCarthy but nothing really shining here yet. Maybe Hallahan for now

2011: #44 Rowe
Next 5 picks: Ah Chee, Joyce, Weardon, Murdoch, Pearce
Only Murdoch may be seen as being better for now

2012: #35 Temay
Next 5 picks: Smith, Jacobs, Ramsay, Duffy, Murdoch
Poor selection that may have been guided from outside. Regardless, nothing else here in this lot and certainly not Jacobs for the money.

2013: #39 Giles
Next 5 picks: Kennedy-Harris, Kolodjashnij, Fuller, Barrass, Allir
I think we had the best guy here but you can't help injury

2014: #28 Viojo-Rainbow
Next 5 picks: Miller, Maynard, Howe, Lamb, Menadue
There will be plenty of competition here for DVR. I feel that all these guys have a good shot at it.

Some say that Grigg and Hampson were terrible selections but look at the players around them.
Sellar, O'Keefe, Jetta, Hislop, Urquhart, Proud etc aren't even on an AFL list any more.

Anyway, we'd want to do better but our third rounders are starting to look O.K. Buckley, Graham, Holman :)
