Unfortunately AFL players are so far behind in being professional compared to other sports around the world.
You don't think elite sportsman from around the world are knee high in white powder?

Feel sorry for Bennell.

And people wonder why the PA insisted on the three strike policy and confidentiality.

Feels like there are a lot of people who are in denial or totally naive as to the extent of the problem in society. By the time the sport media is finished with this it is safe to say that nothing will have been learnt and a young guy will have been put through the meat grinder for no reason other than to sell news papers. It will be much the same as it was for Zaky Mallah.

Spot on Bruno. Another sacrificial lamb to the slaughter. Congratulation Herald Sun/Courier Mail. Scum.

Not even the slightest doubt.

But a picture of a young man who plays for a football club sells papers.....

Anyone that ever suggests the media cares for the wellbeing of the people that give them a living is ******* kidding themselves.

It will be interesting to see what take a number of the high profile media personalities who are well known to enjoy a 'party' have to say about the issue.

I'm no fan of the bloke, but Wayne Carey has come out in support of the fella and fair enough. No saint but at least he's admitted his mistakes. There are so many *ing perfect little angels out there it's crazy.

If we lived in the world I'd like to live in News ltd would have their AFL accreditation stripped from them.

Publishing the photo serves no purpose whatsoever and as others have stated is highly likely to put Bennell in risk of mental harm.

No I don't. It's an AFL mentality to get plastered before a game and go to bed at 4am
Very naive.

NFL is well known for players splashing cash to all hours after a game, as is NBA.

Football across Europe is rife with cocaine. This isn't just an AFL pastime, it's an entire worlds pastime.

Why do you think AFL is the only sport that the players allow illicit testing?

Roughhead out indefiniteyl after discovering skin cancer (malenoma) on his lip.
Just read this, hopefully it's all taken care of and no future problems.

IMO the Herald Sun have done this man a significant injustice. Ok, he's a dickhead, but so are a lot of young guys and girls at the same age. What he must be going through right now, whilst he fault at the end of the day, is far too harsh. His coping mechanisms are clearly out of whack, so how the hell is he supposed to deal with this? Anything happens to this young man as a result of the public humiliation the Herald Sun should be held accountable for. Disgraceful and Kevin Egan was 100% spot on.

In the context of the way this whole issue is being handled by the media, AFL people (coaches, presidents etc) and so forth, this didn't strike me as any way out of line

The entire conversation is absolutely horrifying though.

Over in the US, the war on drugs has been a complete and utter failure for 40 odd years now. mandatory sentencing has been a failure. So everyone's suggestion is to a) make the illicit drugs programme tighter and stronger (so increased mandatory sentencing) and b) make it so President's and s**t can find out. Meaning the programme transforms into something else and player's contracts and s**t are affected, when the reason for the programme is player welfare in the first place, not a tool to make better football department decisions, while c) making no attempt to actually discuss if these drugs are actually bad to use. Is it disappointing? Sure. But ideally players wouldn't drink beer either. some drugs are worse than others and it seems to me like they could do a lot worse than snort cocaine.

This being pasted onto the front page might actually cause a conversation about C) to start, so some good could from this.

In the NHL, a team that has won the cup 2 times in the past 5 years has just had one player arrested for having coke on him and one player's contract terminated (and there's a bit more to it than this. they were looking to get out of his contract anyway) because he had oxy on him when going back to Canada. The difference is, in the AFL, we have an entire programme that can only shine a massive red light onto the issue, instead of hiding it, but nobody can ******* sell the thing it seem and everyone just panics and judges, which means everyone would probably be better off if we just hid it anyway

Wow, that's shithouse news. Hopefully they got it early, can remove it in it's entirety, and he's back relatively quickly.

That will hurt the Hawks, he's damn near their most important player.

As good as he is (and he is an amazing player) if any team can cover it, its the Hawks.

Good luck to him, hopefully no future complications

Hope he makes a full recovery.

Had the good fortune several years ago to take a group of kids to the MCG as part of the auskick half time game (the main one where they wear the club jumpers). The kids I was with were allocated to play for Hawthorn & I was chosen to go out on the ground as the 'coach' (I use the term very loosely, apart from chosing a captain and who would be interchanged there wasn't much else to do). At the end of the game when the kids lined up at the race Rough was one of only 3 players to slap hands with them. The bloke from Hawthorn who ran it was very good, a marked difference from the control freak who ran ours ("line up, be quiet, no touching players" etc).

Like that time Lamar Odom bought 20k worth of coke on his way to a game and smoked some before the warm up, Or that time Gilbert Arenas brought several handguns to practice, loaded one for himself and told his teammate to 'pick one' over an unpaid gambling debt, or that time Michael Beasley got caught smoking weed at a conference for draftees directly after he was drafted, or that time Ron Artest jumped into the crowd and started beating up fans, or that time Ron Artest kept a bottle of Hennessy in his locker for a half time pick me up, or that time Ron Artest did any number of other batshit insane things?

As a national code the AFL is tame as **** compared to others

Indeed. Talking to Jon Anderson is one of the most damaging mental, emotional and physical experiences anyone can go through.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA you ****er....
