Some pretty interesting/concerning stuff put forward in this article posted on the AFL website. What do people think of possibly shorting the game? At least zones seems to be at the bottom of the pile.

THE AFL Commission could hear submissions on the length of games before the end of the season as part of the ongoing discussion on the state of the game.

Football operations manager Mark Evans presented to the Commission on Tuesday in a broad discussion on the interchange cap, sling tackles and congestion.

The sling tackle and congestion issues are set for further discussion in November and December, but the length of games and interchange cap could be resolved before this year's Grand Final.

"What we thought was 10 minutes has now crept up to 12 minutes of stoppage time," Evans told Melbourne radio station 3AW on Tuesday night.

"Fifty per cent of that is traditionally goals, and then the rest is made up of things like blood rule, someone being sent off, stoppages, score reviews, or behinds and out on the full.

"If you reduce stoppages you do reduce the quarter. You'd probably have to take out 10 stoppages to maybe get [the quarter length] down by a minute-and-a-half to two minutes."

Evans said the game length and interchange issues were intertwined and would addressed at the same time with the Commission before the end of the season.

He did not offer any recommendations to the Commission on Tuesday.

Evans said the substitute rule was still up for debate, but he would need assurances that clubs would maintain "good management practices" on concussion if the red and green vests were abandoned next year.

"There would be a logical argument that said if you have a lower (interchange) cap then there's less need for a sub," he told SEN.

Evans said zones would be an "absolute last resort" for the AFL as part of a push to spread the game out.

Why don't we just write down 100 different rules, chuck them in a hat, draw out 20 of them and then play a game?

We could repeat this for every single game of every round. I think it would be a great improvement because it would constantly leave everyone guessing, including the umpires.

The problems only began when the "AFL Rules Committee" was established. It seems like a bunch of flogs with their own agendas interested in continually tweaking the rules in order to make themselves seem relevant. Our own Political Realism if you will. KB was the worst of them all ******* disgrace.

So we will throw all previous records into the Essendon shredder?

Why don't we firstly try:

- Relaxing the blood rule
- Throwing the ball up in the middle
- Less goal reviews. Only use it for goal line decisions.
- Cut down the quarter time breaks
- Routinely umpire correctly. Don't over umpire, but keep the holding the ball rule hot and the game flowing
- Cut the bench down to 80-100

All surely worth a go before cutting down on game time.

I think one thing that would be worth a short would be at the start of next year, decided exactly what will constitute as a free kick and don't change it for a whole season, let players, umpires and fans get used to some consitancy. None of this changing the interpretation every second week.
See how that plays out, if it doesn't work then start talking about talking these proposed changes.

I still don't see how cutting down rotations will speed the game up...

Leave the ******* game alone! There is a reason why so many people have fallen in love with the game for over 150 years. So why fix something that isn't broke? * off, Rules committee!

So....
Complain about less scoring and reduce the time in which a team is able to score.

Complain about congestion and reduce rotations, cause that's totally not going to be trained for and adapted to.

This certainly feels like one of those situations where a very loud minority are calling the shots.

It's a complete spin by the media and it's ******* sickening. Less game time = more adds. If a game goes for 15-20 minutes less then then 7/FOX can still fill the same 2-3 hour time slot but with more adds. They should be a little less obvious about it.

Yep...Ditch the changes that have been made, starting with the interchange. Go back to no interchange, 2 emergencies (AKA, subs).

If they need to cut time, make the breaks shorter....They're looking at fewer interchanges to tire out players, so why not give them less recovery time at the breaks?
