yes the nfl has been doing this for a while. gives sides greater freedom but the wrong trade can really * up a team for a while. but more freedom is a good thing.

Good idea. But I can't wait for teams to stuff this up then cry for priority picks. Will be some hilariously horrible moves made

The AFL opening up the trading of future picks has increased the odds that the Stephen O'Reilly trade won't go down as the worst ever trade in Australian Rules football history.

I don't quite get this.
How do you trade a future pick when you don't know what that pick is yet?
Based on round.

So you trade your known pick (say 2nd rounder #25 OVR) and your future (second rounder). That future pick becomes based on your ladder position.
Generally a future pick has a lower level of value due to this unknown.

Good idea, we will give Collingwood our first and second picks from the years 2019-2020 for Pendlebury and Moore :D

Come on Pies, you know we get lots of high picks so it's a good deal :p

As an example -

St Kilda trade Tom Hickey and our 2nd round pick in 2015 to Essendon for their 3rd round pick in 2015 and their first round pick in 2016.

St Kilda are betting that Essendon stay near the bottom and thus, we get a top 5 pick.

Essendon are betting they improve and thus only give away a pick in the 10-15 range.

You dont need to know what number the pick is. You just get the pick.

Im 100% certain that teams with top end Father/Son or Academy players will stockpile future picks in order to bank points.

All of a sudden guys like Treloar, Dixon etc can go where they want and their current club doesnt have to sit and take it.

Imagine if last year Port gave up their 2014 AND 2015 first rounders for Ryder? They think they are giving up 2 picks in the late teens and all of a sudden Essendon would be cashing in this year.

Going to be really interesting to watch.

Only thing left to add is live trading on draft day! Imagine GWS scrambling to trade out say Curtly Hampton, because they need a pick to match the bid on an Academy selection?

Be funny when this backfires and a club who bends over and gives up 2 1st rounders for a gun declines horribly the next year, finishes in the bottom 4 and misses out on that gun draftee.

More player power to get to where they want to go however, can see Hawthorn topping up year after year after year with this to stay at the top.

*Edit, Hawthorn were right to be critical of the initial NSW/QLD thing this was meant for, if we want an even playing field then do it for all. The AFL has bent enough rules for them expansion clubs already etc pinching free agents that hadn't played 8 years of footy yet enabling clubs to lose prized kids they had put 2-4 years of development in, the stupid mini-draft making GWSs draft position stronger for 2 years after their initial big draft also creating a gap (Gold Coast only had 1 big draft FWIW). Thankfully some other clubs drafted well in that period and GWS made a few draft howlers in return.
