The obvious situation that may play out is both WA teams win their qualifying final and get to host the prelims. However, say Fremantle and West Coast finish top 2 and then this plays out (current ladder standings):

Week 1
Freo beat Richmond @ Subiaco
Hawthorn beat West Coast @ Subiaco
Sydney beat Geelong @ SCG
Bulldogs beat Adelaide @ MCG

Week 2
West Coast beat Bulldogs @ Subiaco
Richmond beat Sydney @ MCG

Week 3
Freo v West Coast @ Subiaco
Hawthorn v Richmond @ MCG

Grand Final
WA team v ???

That is a very real possibility and that would mean neither WA team would travel until the Grand Final. Has this ever happened before for two non-Vic teams?

Well in 2004 it should have been the case. Port Adelaide and Brisbane both won their home Qualifying Finals, then the Lions got stitched up and had to play their Prelim and the MCG.

Does anyone know if that rule is still in place? Or could we hypothetically have 2 Prelim's at Subiaco this year?

Nah they changed the contract with the Melbourne stadia

Pity WA still haven't built that stadium they've been crying out for yet...
Yeah it'd just about get torn down with the noise I suspect.

But yes, it is a pretty good luxury to have essentially three home finals! And basically, if the Eagles and Dockers do not meet in a QF, they will meet in a Prelim, unless they both win their QFs and PFs, then we'll have a derby GF.

Will Bigfooty survive? The melt from Victoria will be a sight to behold.

Would both Fremantle and west coast travel on the same flight to Melbourne for an all wa grand final, they could be arrested at Tulla and thrown in the lock up and the gf cancelled. :D
If it happens there'll need to be an airline chartered and the Army deployed to Perth.

This is rubbish. I lived in Melbourne for the 2004 to 2006 grand finals (two interstate clubs), as well as when a Victorian club played an interstate club and seriously, hardly anyone in Victoria gave a s**t. It's only the old dinosaurs that bemoaned it. From my experience, when the grand final comes around and their team has been knocked out, most of the Victorians I knew didn't give a s**t about who played, they just wanted to watch a great game.

He shouldn't need to, but IF it happens (and it's a long way from certain) look forward to a lot of Victorian media bleating about how wrong and unfair it is.
IF it happens, then that's the way it should be. Enjoy it and don't worry what everyone else thinks. As bradrowe32 said, Victorians may not give a s**t about finals featuring two interstate clubs, but will take an interest if it's a good quality match.

Hopefully Perth can handle two home finals in the same weekend ;)
(As an aside, has Perth ever had two AFL matches at Subiaco in the same weekend?)

W

Why would he need to confirm it?

Because the MCC have the rights to the PF thanks to shitty AFL stadium contracting, with their approval, the MCC will allow the PF to be played interstate in exchange for compensatory greater access to games in the following year.
