Whether or not that was the reason for him being told his services weren't needed we wont know. He's gone and we are better off for it.
It almost certainly wasn't the reason Cooney was moved according to some club insiders. I'm just saying that Cooney did entertain the prospect of leaving for another club at least a year before we nudged him out.
I think some on here with good connections inside the club have suggested that Cooney has not been a great influence on some of the younger players who tended to look up to him (especially Stringer and Hunter.) Cooney has never been very professional in his preparation and his attitude to training and he certainly had a poor demeanor and attitude during several club functions - like the wanna be bad boy at school who talks and cracks jokes at inappropriate times and generally acts boganish. Very much like Dane Swann at Collingwood has been prior to this season.
