With just the 3 Melbourne teams winning this week, I can't imagine that's happened to often?

Also happened in rounds 6, 7 & 11 this year (counting Geelong as a 'Melbourne' team).

last time two Victorian winners - R9 2014 (split round)
last time two Victorian winners in non-split round - R15 2005
one Victorian winner - R3 1916 (two matches, one drawn)

After winning back to back premierships in 1914 and 1915, Carlton next won back to back premierships in 1981 and 1982.
They began 1915, as reigning premiers, by playing in a draw versus Fitzroy at Princes Park.
They began 1982, as reigning premiers, by playing in a draw versus Fitzroy at Princes Park.

When you combine the most recent home crowd Essendon has had vs each of the 17 teams in the AFL, it comes to a perfectly round figure of 700,000.

Essendon's worst end-of-year percentages:
64.20% (1918), 70.29% (1915), 74.00% (1907), 75.71% (1971), 77.08% (1933), 78.61% (1903)
Essendon's percentage is 72.72% with a game to go against Collingwood. A surprise win could lift Essendon to 74-76%, an expected loss could drop them to 70-72%. Whatever happens, at best, 2015 will be the 5th worst percentage Essendon has finished a season with.

Some of these have come up before, but here is a list of interesting firsts and lasts throughout football history:

South Melbourne played their first game against Melbourne in Round 1 1897, and when the Swans were relocated to Sydney in 1982 their first game as the Sydney Swans was also against Melbourne.

University's first win in its VFL tenure from 1908-1914 was against Richmond in Round 2 1908, and its last win was also against Richmond, in Round 3 1912.

West Coast played Richmond in their AFL debut in Round 1 1987, and Fremantle also played Richmond in their first AFL game in Round 1 1995. The Tigers and Dockers also played the last ever AFL game at the WACA in 2000 - with these two teams the only two in the league at the time that the Eagles did not play at this ground.

The Brisbane Bears made their debut against North Melbourne at the MCG in Round 1 1987, and played their last ever game against North Melbourne in the 1996 Preliminary Final at the same venue.

The Brisbane Bears and Fitzroy seemed destined to merge when you consider that the Bears' first game at Carrara was against Fitzroy in 1987; their first victory at the GABBA was against the Lions in Round 16 1991; Fitzroy's last official home game at Princes Park was against the Brisbane Bears in Round 21 1993 following the Lions' move to the Western Oval where they met the Bears in their first home game at this venue in Round 3 1994; and in Round 20 1996 Fitzroy's last game at Princes Park was against the Bears.

St Kilda and Fitzroy played in Fitzroy's last home game at the Brunswick Street Oval in 1966; the Lions' first home game at the Junction Oval in 1970 and their last at the ground in 1984 were against St Kilda; and the Saints and Lions also played the last senior game at Moorabbin in Round 20 1992. Fitzroy's last game at the Western Oval in 1996 was against St Kilda.

The Fremantle Dockers' first win was against Fitzroy in Round 3 1995; Fitzroy's last ever win was against the Dockers in Round 8 1996 and the Lions' last ever game was against Fremantle at Subiaco in Round 22 1996.

St Kilda were the first team to defeat the Brisbane Bears (Round 3 1987) and the first team to lose to the Brisbane Lions in Round 2 1997.

Collingwood were the first opponent of Port Adelaide when they made their AFL debut in Round 1 1997, but in 1991 the Magpies were the last team to meet the new Adelaide team in the Crows' debut season.

Essendon were the first team to play Adelaide in Melbourne in Round 4 1991, and the first team to play Port Adelaide in Adelaide in Round 2 1997.

Geelong played St Kilda in the Cats' first game at Kardinia Park in Round 2 1941, while the Saints hosted the Cats in St Kilda's last home game at the Junction Oval in Round 18 1964.

Hawthorn played the Swans in the last game at Glenferrie Oval in the final round of 1973, and the Hawks and Swans also played the last ever game at Waverley Park in Round 22 1999.

North Melbourne played South Melbourne in the Swans' last game at the Lake Oval in 1981, and the Swans played the Kangaroos in the first of North Melbourne's games at its new (and ill-fated) Coburg ground in 1965.

Hawthorn and Richmond played the first game at Glenferrie Oval in Round 1 1925, and the Hawks and Tigers were opposed in the last game at the Punt Road venue in Round 18 1964.

Carlton were Fitzroy's opponents in the first game at the Brunswick Street Oval in Round 1 1897, and when Fitzroy moved to Princes Park in 1967 their first home game was against the Blues.

North Melbourne and Hawthorn played Carlton in their first finals matches (1945 & 1957 respectively), but fellow 1925 entrant the Western Bulldogs have not played the Blues in a final to date.

Just a few tid bits that came to mind just as I read through this.
Carlton were the first Victorian based club to christen Football Park with a Crows loss in the league. Beat Crows at Football Park in Easter 1991, round two. Carlton won the last game ever at Football Park in the league when they beat Port Adelaide in last round of 2013.

in 1986 the teams finishing first ,second and third on ladder were all co-tenants at Princes Park.

How did you even notice that?
I got sick and tired about hearing team x has better crowds than team y in season z as those figures can be skewed by playing the big teams at home and missing the small ones.

So to try and keep everything even I have a spread sheet which has the last crowd in the home state (I do include Canberra for GWS) for each team.

The flaw in this is if a game doesn't get played for a while (eg. Port Adelaide-North Melbourne) - When the bandwagon gets going, that becomes more and more an outlier (It's sitting there on 14,508)

I also colour code each crowd for when it was last played.
So I can come out and say, 'this game should happen this season as it hasn't happened in the last 3 years'

There's some peculiar stats that come up.
The average away crowd for GWS and Gold Coast are higher than that of Port Adelaide.
The Gold Coast crowd this year for both the Adelaide and Brisbane games were the exact same (at 12,464)

What I really want is next year, Adelaide to get home games vs Carlton, Geelong and the Bulldogs. Get 45k to each of those and remain the status quo on other games and we can push Collingwood for best crowds. Atm we're a distant 4th behind Collingwood (805k), Richmond (790k) and Hawthorn (788k) at 748k. With 45k in those 3 games we'd be knocking on the door of 800k. Would just need Collingwood to drop a little.

Having said that, The top 3 should change this week drastically.

Collingwood loses a 91k crowd vs Essendon, even with 60k they drop to 775k
Hawthorn loses a 69k crowd vs Carlton, probably replace it with 45k and come in at 760k
Richond loses a 47k crowd vs North, probably get 40k (damn Etihad) bringing them in at 780k

So Richmond should be #1 after this week.

Matthew Pavlich (333 games, 166 wins, 167 losses) lost the first 2 games of his career, then won the next 2 before losing the next 4 ...

He has never again managed to get his win% to 50%, let alone better. Can he do either in this year's finals?
Did he miss the draw away to Sydney?

Did Juan Antonio Samaranch help you compose your post?
Sorry, but I like a good typo.

With Carlton finishing last this year, it is the first time as a player or coach that Mick Malthouse has been involved with a wooden spoon team.

As a player, he transferred from St. Kilda to Richmond in mid-1976, thus avoiding St.Kilda's 1977 wooden spoon season.

As a coach, he previously has had three teams finish second last - Footscray in 1989 (13 of 14) and Collingwood in 2000 and 2005 (both 15 of 16).

Week 1 of finals is Oldies' Week. Teams as named:

- Hawthorn's most-experienced and oldest team ever
- North Melbourne's most-experienced and second-oldest team ever
- Fremantle's second most-experienced and second-oldest team ever
- West Coast's third-oldest team ever

Average games played for all teams 122.3, average age 26.31.

Previous highs for EF/QF weekend were set last year - 116.6 and 25.92.
