Player Watch Tom Doedee - Departed for Brisbane, End of 1st Round FA Compensation

You drafted who? Hahaha. Never heard of him.

Then again I've never heard of any of the kids drafted including ours. :D

Even if he doesn't progress to the midfield he does appear to be something that we don't really have…a medium size defender who is athletic and can actually defend! I reckon he will be a key part of Pyke's defensive web from 2017 onwards (unless he exceeds that and becomes a gun mid).

Is he proven in any other position?

I just don't reckon he's 'proven' in any position, which leads me to think he's being recruited based on a role we want him to play going forward (as opposed to whatever 'role' he's played in the past). And that role I reckon is as a disciplined, accountable hard nosed mid.

Just my initial impression though. I've got NFI at the end of the day

Adelaide’s call to select defender Tom Doedee with pick No.17 has been described by some as one of the biggest surprises of the 2015 National Draft.

But the promising 18-year-old, who has only played football for three years, was on the Club’s recruiting radar even before he accepted an invitation to do the pre-season with the Geelong Falcons late last year.

His rise in the 12 months since has been rapid.

After a limited pre-season because of injury, Doedee (pronounced 'Doe-day') started out playing practice matches for the Falcons B-grade team, but quickly worked his way into the senior side.

Doedee, who played at centre half-forward and full forward for junior club St Joseph’s, was tried in a new position in defence where he impressed with his competitiveness and courage.

By the middle of this year, the 187cm, 83kg, teenager had been chosen to represent Victoria Country at the Under-18 National Championships.

Unfortunately, he was only able to play three games after breaking his ribs. Crows National Recruiting Manager Hamish Ogilvie remembers the contest where the injury occurred.

“Tom reads the play well and is a great intercept mark. He’s also really brave,” Ogilvie said.

“He went back with the flight to take a mark and got caved in. He still took the mark, but he broke his ribs and the doctor made him come off the ground.”

The next step in Doedee’s draft journey was receiving an invitation to the Combine. There, he showcased his athleticism, finishing fifth in the agility test and ninth in the relative vertical jump.

By the time the draft rolled around, he’d spoken to 14 clubs including Adelaide.

Doedee had all but ruled out the Crows, who spoke to him “two or three months before any other club” as his prospective future club after the trade period.

“I certainly wasn’t expecting to go in the first round,” Doedee said.

“And I didn’t think it was going to be the Crows who would pick me, judging from what I’d read or heard, and especially when the Club traded its middle-round picks (in the trade period) – I thought that probably wasn’t good for me!

“But when I heard Don Pyke say the name ‘Tom’, my heart skipped a beat. I was sitting on the couch at home with my head in my hands in disbelief and Mum and Dad were screaming. It was surreal.”

Ogilvie said the Crows stayed true to their talent order in selecting Doedee, who he says has the versatility to play multiple positions at AFL level.

“We rated him highly and we picked him,” he said.

“Tom can play anywhere. We’ve seen him play defence and forward, but he could maybe play on a wing or in the midfield as well. He’s an elite athlete and a very driven young man.

“He’s got a lot of upside based on what he’s been able to do in just one year in the TAC Cup.”

Doedee said he’d surprised himself with his progression in 2015.

“At the start of the year I thought I was a 0.1 per cent chance of being drafted,” he said.

“I was just trying to get a game for the Falcons. I ended making the Vic Country squad, but I wasn’t thinking too much about the draft at that stage.

“It wasn’t until I got invited to the Draft Combine that it became a bit more of a reality … but still I never expected this.”

Geelong Falcons Talent Manager Mick Turner rated Doedee as the “best one-on-one defender” in the TAC Cup this year.

In Turner's eyes, he was one of the only players to appear comfortable against Eastern Ranges goal machine (and Hawthorn draftee) Blake Hardwick, who booted 56 majors in 16 games.

"A lot of people who follow the TAC Cup reckon he (Doedee) is the best one-on-one defender in the TAC Cup," Turner told AFL.com.au.

"He used to play on Blake Hardwick who got drafted to Hawthorn, he was one of the very few players I could see controlling him.

"The upside to Tom is he hasn't been in football for long, he's very athletic and he's got a lot of scope for development.

"Adelaide, it's just a complete list management decision that they need a good one-on-one athletic defender that can play on small and talls and that's Tom Doedee – they've got a good player."

After his name was read out, Doedee’s phone quickly lit up with calls and messages from Crows coaches, recruiters and players.

“Don Pyke called and also Jake Lever, Taylor Walker, Rory Sloane and Troy Menzel,” he said.

“It was crazy. I’ve only watched these guys on TV over the past four or five years and now I’ve got a chance to play with them.”

Doedee will begin training with his new teammates next week. He said he was looking forward to embarking on a new adventure in Adelaide.

“I’m excited. It’ll actually be nice to move away from Geelong and experience somewhere else,” he said.

“I’m keen to get over there and get started.”

Reading this thread has been one of the most disturbing experiences of my life. I swear half the people on here have an IQ of about 65.

Action: Crows don't pick Burton
Reaction: Everyone freak out. I can't believe we didn't pick Burton, he's a key forward and we desperately need one.
Reality: Burton is 191 cm, so no he isn't a key forward. Burton has a smashed leg and knee. This injury is not one he will get over, it will stay with him. It will effect his ability to run, jump and his agility. Burton was hoping to become a midfielder, the knee injury makes that very unlikely. The Crows are well aware of his ability and the risks. This was a carefully planned decision by Adelaide.

Action: Crows pick someone the papers didn't say we would pick.
Reaction: Everyone freak out. Who? What the hell? How dare we? We've lost the plot. We are terrible at drafting. Our club is s**t and everyone is hopeless. Doesn't Ogilvie read the papers? He is clueless.
Reality: The Crows recruiting staff is amongst the best in the business. Ogilvie has a unique eye for talent. The Crows will have known this is a big call and would not have selected this guy on a whim. Hours of evaluation go in to a draft pick, it's not like we got caught out and pulled his name out of a hat. The player picked has talent and we picked the best available according to our evaluation.

Action: Supporters see that Doedee is listed as a defender.
Reaction: Everyone freak out. Another mid sized defender? We just recruited Seedsman and Hampton. We have Cheney, Smith, Brown, Laird, Shaw, Otten, Henderson, Mackay, Seedsman and Hampton. What the hell are we doing? We have no idea. Complete amateurs.
Reality: Doedee has played very little football and played as a defender for Vic Country as they didn't know where else to play him. He was of course good enough to get in their team despite the limited background, but lets ignore that. Cheney, Shaw and Otten compete for the same position. Brown and Laird are small defenders. That leaves Smith, Seedsman, Hampton, Henderson & Mackay as midsize defenders. Of these, Hampton has NOT been recruited to play in defence. He is to play wing/half forward. All the interviews after his recruiting make this clear. Henderson and Mackay have proven they are too sh!t to play in defence. That really leaves Smith and Seedsman as 'similar' types. Of course it is completely stupid because...

Action: Supporters hear that Doedee is a great shut down defender.
Reaction: Everyone freak out. Why did we recruit another Talia? Stupid Stupid. Stupid.
Reality: Ok, so lets be clear here. We did not recruit Doedee to play in defence. Firstly the Talia claim is the dumbest thing I have ever read on the internet. Secondly, we are projecting him to play as a midfielder. Anyone who has actually watched the tape of him will have seen his balance, evasiveness and poise. The kid has Pendelbury type attributes and THAT is what we just recruited, not a shut down defender.

Basically my head hurts and I fear for the future of mankind.
Most enjoyable.

Knight 100 percent... atkins.. im still not sure.. but given where we picked him... 100 percent right... then u have charlie too. This man finds the gold.

No doubt he has the ability to find the rough diamonds... however we are yet to see how well he goes with top picks (but early form with Snake Lever gives confidence)

To be fair, no one had really heard of Rory Sloane before we drafted him (in fact every club passed on him in 2007 and went 2nd round 08)... this might be one of those years where there are amazing talents in the 15-45 range that no one saw coming

That's an old gurnsey and an old hat....... did he already have those? Is he a crows supporter?
His friend brought it round. It's in the article.

Not that surprised we drafted him now, looks to be a utility and in Pykes short time in charge he's said he wants players who can play multiple positions and this lad looks to be one of those. Yes he was tipped to go in the 60s or later but who knows... But I do still wish we went with Collins or B.Mckay.

All this talk of "well we should've down graded our second pick if we were going to get Doedee" is complete nonsense. We gave our recruiters two first round picks to have the flexibility to make two great selections. What if we traded that second first-rounder for two late second rounders and then Harry McKay slides to where our pick was originally? You never really know what's going to happen on draft night, and you sure as hell don't know what's going to happen on draft night when trade period ended a month or so ago.

Our club in recent history has been good at picking kids in the first round, but more than that, we have been outstanding at picking defenders even if some of them didn't stay at the club, I think our recruiters have been superb in recognising defensive talent and being able to weigh it against attacking flare that is appealing to the phantom draft makers.

In Haggis we trust.
