To win this year's premiership, West Coast will have the beat the same team (Hawthorn) twice in the finals series.

The last team to achieve this feat was West Coast in 1992, when it beat Geelong in the Second Semi Final and Grand Final (it also beat Hawthorn in an Elimination Final at Subiaco).

The previous time this happened was in 1991, when Hawthorn beat West Coast in the Qualifying Final at Subiaco and the Grand Final at Waverley. As a result, Hawthorn is the only club to win a premiership after beating the same team twice in the same finals series in different states. After its win at Subiaco in the Qualifying Final, West Coast can equal this record if it beats Hawthorn at the MCG on Saturday.

Four similarities between this year's AFL and NRL finals series:

1. The minor premiers (Fremantle and Sydney Roosters) both failed to make the Grand Final

2. The Grand Final will be a rematch of the Second Qualifying Final (2v3) - West Coast v Hawthorn and Brisbane Broncos v North Queensland Cowboys

3. Neither Preliminary Final was played in the same state where the Grand Final will be played (AFL - two Prelims in WA, GF in Vic, NRL - Prelims in Qld and Vic, GF in NSW)

4. One of the teams playing has not appeared in a Grand Final since 2006 when it won the Premiership (West Coast and Brisbane).

FROM BATHURST

- Craig Lowndes now has won 6 times with 4 different Co-Drivers (Greg Murphy 1996, Jamie Whincup 2006-2008, Mark Skaife 2010, Steven Richards 2015). Only in one of those seasons (1996) has he won the championship, and the race was NOT a part of the championship in 1996 (a sprint round was held there earlier in the year)

- Steven Richards has won the race 4 times with 4 different Co-Drivers (Jason Bright 1998, Greg Murphy 1999, Mark Winterbottom 2013, Craig Lowndes 2015). The wins in 1998 and 2013 were in a Ford, the wins in 1999 and 2015 were in a Holden. Only once however (1999) did he win the race as a full time championship driver (Co-Driver only in 2013 and 2015, BTCC Test Driver for Nissan in 1998 having raced the first 2 rounds in Australia).

- This is the 6th year in a row where the drivers on Pole Position DIDN'T win the race. Last team to do the double was in 2009 (Garth Tander/Will Davison).

- This is the first time since the 1997 Super Touring 1000 (Geoff and David Brabham) that neither winning driver from the previous year's race didn't start the next year's equivalent race (there were 2 races in both years, one for Super Touring cars and the other for V8 Supercars with both recognised in official statistics. Geoff started the 1998 V8 1000 finishing 8th with Tony Longhurst). Chaz Mostert didn't start because of a crash in the aborted qualifying session, Paul Morris "retired" from the endurance racing to mentor the all girls team.

- The all girls team (Renee Gracie/Simona de Silvestro) finished 40 laps behind the winning car, the biggest margin from first to officially last since 2008 when Rick Kelly and Paul Dumbrell finished 34 laps behind. The previous all girls team (Melinda Price/Kerryn Brewer) in 1998 finished 11th, only 10 laps behind the winners. They were 1 lap away from not being classified, as to be classified they have to have completed 75% race distance.

FROM THE NRL GF

- This was the first premiership for the North Queensland Cowboys at a senior level, having won the 9's tournament in 2014 and having affiliated 2nd tier teams win the Queensland Cup three times (Young Guns in 2005, Northern Pride in 2010/2014, the Pride also winning the state championship match held as the main curtain raiser to the GF a week later in 2014)

- This was the first loss in a senior Grand Final for the Brisbane Broncos. They had previously lost 2 pre-season competition finals in 1992 (to Illawarra) and 1994 (South Sydney) played under a 4 quarter format, and also the World Sevens tournament in 1992 (to Wigan).

- Wayne Bennett has also suffered his first Grand Final loss as a SOLE senior coach. He was co-coach of the defeated 1987 Canberra team with Don Furner, but had been victorious in the other 7 Grand Final teams he had coached (St.George/Illawarra 2010, Brisbane 1992-93, 1997 SL, 1998, 2000, 2006).

- Back to Back premierships have not happened in the NRL since reunification in 1998 (although technically Brisbane were back to back premiers in 1997-98 given there were 2 competitions in 1997).

- Since reunification, the minor premiers have only gone on to win the competition 5 times (Brisbane 1998/2000, Penrith 2003, St.George/Illawarra 2010, Roosters 2013). It would have been 6 if Melbourne didn't breach the Salary Cap given they did the double in 2007.

- This was the second Grand Final decided and finalised with Extra Time, and the first in the top grade under the Golden Point format. The 1989 GF was finished after a guaranteed 10 minutes each way of extra time (Canberra won 19-14 after leading 15-14 at the 90 minute mark), whilst the other Grand Final that went to extra time in 1977 (St.George vs Parramatta) remained deadlocked at 9-9 with the replay a week later going to the Dragons 22-0. The drawn 1978 GF (Manly vs Cronulla) didn't have any extra time (11-11 after 80 minutes) and a replay was played 3 days later (Manly won 16-0).

- This was the 2nd national sporting title to be claimed by a Townsville based team, following the Fire's WNBL title earlier this year. Both sides in their first season in their respective leagues finished last (Cowboys 1995 ARL, 2-20; Fire 2001/2002 WNBL, 3-18)

And after its previous grand finals losses in 1991 and 2005, West Coast made the grand final again the following year and won the premiership.

What does 2016 hold in store for the Eagles?

To the likes of Ron The Bear , *Paul* and australianfootball (if you haven't been following the stimulating conversation in Footy History) you should find this post regarding a Geelong player (or two) from yesteryear of interest:-

In a brief email conversation with Stephen Rodgers today he also advised of a new update; that the Jack Ross who played for Geelong from 1919-1922, is actually made up of two different people!
John William Ross (1919 : 2 games)
John Charles Ross (1920-1922 33 games)

Seems that there is a new name to add to your records.

There's also been quite a few recent posts over the previous couple of pages of that thread regarding possible errors in official team lineups, and it's almost certain that a few changes will be made in the next week or so.

Not so much a statistic as a coincidence (and apologies if it seems morbid) but when the Brisbane Lions drafted Josh Schache this week I remembered how his father Laurence, a Brisbane Bears player from 1991 & 1992, died prematurely of amyloidosis at the age of 34 in 2002.

However, Laurence Schache is not the only Brisbane Bears player to die prematurely. Also deceased are Phil Walsh (alleged homicide at the age of 55 in 2015); Brent Green (drowned at sea off the Gold Coast in 2009 aged 33); Robert Dickson (died in car accident in 2009 at age 45) and Troy Clarke (died of brain aneurism in 2013 at age 44). For a club that was around just 10 years (and obviously having a limited number of players due to this), it is quite odd and sad that 5 of its players should die prematurely of a variety of reasons.

Yikes! I didn't know of the sad stories of Clarke and Green. An amazingly awful record for a relatively young club.

This actually highlights how good a coaches Parkin, Sheedy and Jeans were.
Parkin won a premiership in 1978 at one club and more later on including one 17 years later.
3 different groups of players for 4 flags shows he was a damn fine coach.

Sheedy have only won his premierships at one club but 1984 to 2000 is 16 years apart and basically 2 to 3 different groups of players is impressive again like Parko was able to do.

Allan Jeans won his first flag in 1966 won another one 17 years later at a different club and almost a quarter of a century different between his first and last premierships teams.

Sensational effort by three very different characters.

In 1991, Fitzroy looked certainties for the wooden spoon heading into the last round, but in one of the greatest boil-overs of all time, the Lions upset the ladder leading West Coast Eagles to climb off the bottom of the ladder, with Fitzroy's future merger partners the Brisbane Bears collecting the 1991 wooden spoon after a hefty defeat later that day at the hands of the Bulldogs.

Twenty four years later, the Brisbane Lions look certain to win the 2015 wooden spoon, but climb off the bottom of the ladder and condemn Carlton to last place in the final round by upsetting none other than the Bulldogs.
