Random question without notice as we move towards Rio 2016.

Who should carry the flag?

Had Lleyton Hewitt gone on one more season he would have been an obvious choice, having spent many years coming back to play relatively pointless ties against Chinese Taipei and the like representing his country.

But without him there, who do you think will carry the flag at the ceremony?

Meares and Pearson would be great choices either way. I would select Pearson because I believe what she has achieved has been more difficult due to more competition in the world of athletics compared to track cycling.

Opening ceremony flag barer goes to someone going to their 4th, 5th or 6th Olympics, so put your money or Lauren Jackson if next month she says she wants to go to Rio as that will be her 5th games. She said late last year she will make up her mind at the end of the WNBL season and see if her knee is up to it. She has had 9 operations on her left knee. Jacko was the flag bearer in 2012.

Andrew Hoy is trying to make his 8th Olympic team but he has been a flag bearer at the 1996 opening ceremony. Between 1984-2012 only missed 2008.

Anna Meares will be going to her 4th.

Closing ceremony flag bearer goes to someone who has won at least one gold at that Olympics

Jason Day,

Particularly if he's the #1 golfer in the world at the time.

He's Australia's biggest superstar sportsman atm, with by far the biggest world wide rep.

I'll make a bold guess in predicting the 2020 one in Tokyo: Ben Simmons.

Pearson, Meares, Day. Spot the odd one out. Please. In an olympics sense Day would be out of place carrying their luggage yet alone the Australian flag.

The last couple of olympics the sailing team have been the best performers for Australia. They are low profile but I'm guessing one or two of them might have a resume to make a case.

If Malcolm Page hadn't retired it would have been his 4th Olympics and a big chance , as he won gold in the 470 class in 2008 and 2012 and has won 4 or 5 world championships to make him the most successful 470 class sailor. He was flag bearer at the closing ceremony in 2012. All the other gold medalists from London, will only be going to their 2nd or 3rd games and are single medalists.

Sally Pearson has won a gold and a silver, plus world championship titles and it will be her third Olympics. She would be my choice.

Meares has been to more Games, won more Olympic Gold's and more has more World and National Titles than Pearson.

That being said Flagbearer isn't about your success its about your longevity

Out of interest it has been announced that Caroline Wozniaki will carry the Danish flag

Why Wozniacki? Explaining its decision, the Danish Olympic committee said the 25-year-old Wozniacki was one of the ‘most successful tennis players’ of the past decade.

There have been other Danish athletes that have achieved more than her and at Olympic level. This is about PR.

Agreed an unusual decision, given she didn't win a medal in London and is yet to win a Grand Slam.

Read the other day about Michael Diamond (shooter) putting his hand up. He's been to many a games and wouldn't be the worst choice, although doesn't have the profile of those mentioned above.

While it would be his 6th Olympics, the AOC wouldn't go near him because of the events of 2003 with the assault charges that were levelled on him but in the end cleared of.

Anna Meares probably gets it.

One from left field (if she qualifies on Saturday) is Carmen Marton, this will be her 3rd straight Olympics and a former world taekwondo champion.
