Roadhouse proprietor Adam Stewart said he had received a panicked phone call from a fisherman giving him details of the attack and the condition of the backpacker.

He said he had convinced the two “pretty scared’’ fishermen to return to the beach from where they stayed in contact by mobile phone.

“They saw a vehicle and a person running from that vehicle in a pretty bad shape. They weren’t sure if it was the driver (and) they weren’t sure whether to take off but I managed to get them to go back ... and rescue the girl,” he said.

“It was extremely graphic and the panic in the boys was really evident, especially when they got there.

“They didn’t know if she was a man or a woman, unfortunately she was in a really bad way. We wish her the best because it’s not nice.’’

SAPOL pr firm has kicked in to avert any potential loss of tourist dollars.

Police acting Superintendent Trent Cox said the team of 12 investigators and intelligence officers would probe whether the charged man, aged in his 50s and from the southern suburbs, had committed other crimes.

The man’s DNA was being analysed and items seized from his house and 4WD were being examined.

Asst Comm Barr would not comment on the items taken from the home, but said “they did cause us some concerns which we will look at”.

“We’re not investigating any other crimes at this time in relation to the person who is in custody, but the very nature of this incident cries out to inquire into the background of this suspect,” he said.

“We will be trawling through his history and other persons he may have come across in the past few years at least.”

Trophies perhaps, sounds like a major ******* has been taken down.

Id be shocked if this is the first time he has done something such as this, there would be people far more qualified to comment than me but I believe that it is rare for someone capable of this (attacking random people so brutally) to get to his age before doing so.

There is every chance he has been doing this stuff for 20+ years but just never been caught.
