In the tradition of last year’s top-selling ‘Tangaroa’, the Vodafone Warriors and Canterbury of New Zealand have gone to the next level by today unveiling the ground-breaking ‘Spirit of the Warrior’ jersey for the Dick Smith NRL Auckland Nines at Eden Park on February 6-7 next year.

With the extravaganza bringing the NRL’s 16 teams together for the only time in the season, the essence of the occasion has been captured with an evocative jersey featuring not only a Maori warrior but also images representing each of the other 15 competing teams.

Elements of earth, water, air and fire surround the figures and link them together in a surreal battle scene in the tattoo-styled design; artwork inspired by many different cultures also flows through the design and often into the figures themselves.

Countless hours went into the design resulting in a captivating product from the Vodafone Warriors’ official apparel sponsor Canterbury of New Zealand. Last year’s NRL Nines jersey – named ‘Tangaroa’ (the Maori god of the ocean) – was one of best sellers in club’s history.

New signings Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Issac Luke were the first Vodafone Warriors players to model the jersey at a photo shoot before leaving for England with the Kiwis. They were thrilled with the kit and are both keen to represent the club for the first time at the NRL Nines.

The version of the ‘Spirit of the Warrior’ launched today is a replica of the jersey the Vodafone Warriors will be kitted out in at Eden Park in February.

The jersey features a strong mesh fabric to wick away sweat during tough games; it also has reinforced seams for additional strength. All logos are sublimated into the design for a sleek smooth fit.

Not sure, could be a combination of both... and possibly he may want to play 5/8 or issues with Madge, which I've been hearing people talk about on the Souths forum but I don't know what issues specifically that they are referring to

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have completed their investigation into the circumstances that led to players Dylan Walker and Aaron Gray being hospitalised on 22 September 2015.

The Club undertook a thorough process which involved interviews with key persons including the two players concerned, the receipt of verbal and written submissions from both players, a review of the Club’s medical log and an audit of the Club’s protocols relating to the treatment and recovery of players from surgery and major injury.

The Board of the South Sydney Football Club was presented with the report of the investigations prepared by CEO, John Lee, in consultation with the NRL Integrity Unit. It resolved to issue show cause notices to both players, asking each of them to answer allegations that they had not met their obligations under the terms of their NRL playing contracts, the NRL Code of Conduct and the South Sydney Football Club Code of Conduct.

Both players appeared before the Board and presented separate submissions accompanied by their respective representatives.

The findings of the investigation and the show cause hearings were presented to the Board at its 24 November meeting. After requesting further information, the Board has determined that:

there was no evidence that either player had illicit substances or alcohol in his system;both players had nonetheless sourced additional pain-killing medication from their own GPs on the day of the incident, clearly beyond that which was prescribed by their specialists following their respective surgeries; andby their actions and their consequent hospitalisation, the players had brought the Club and the NRL into serious disrepute.

Accordingly, the Board directed that both players will:

attend educational sessions to better understand how to correctly use medicines;undertake a minimum of 20 hours of community service (in addition to normal Club obligations) including speaking to groups about their experiences and learnings;make themselves available for ongoing regular testing for drugs including prescription drugs; andeach be penalised 5% of their 2015 contract value, with a further 5% to be suspended pending successful completion of points 1 and 2 and their co-operation with point 3 above.

The Board has also decided that the fines imposed will be forfeited by the Club and donated to charities, including St Vincent’s Hospital’s Alcohol & Drug Service.

Through a separate process, the Club undertook a review of its Medications Policy. This focused on the practical application of the policy and whether more comprehensive protocols were required in the light of the incident involving players Walker & Gray.

Having considered the findings of the review, the Board resolved to:

modify and strengthen its Medications Policy and the Club’s Code of Conduct; to place the responsibility on our players to report any prescriptions obtained other than from the Club Doctor to the Club’s Medical Officer,increase its level of education to players of all levels around the correct use of prescription medication, and the consequences of their misuse.

Mr Lee commented that: “The review was comprehensive and a proactive step to modernise our Medications Policy.

“We consulted some of the top sporting bodies and organisations in Australia, including the Australian Institute of Sport, to ensure that our policy is contemporary, practical and focuses on the wellbeing of our players.

"We will work closely with all of our players to ensure an incident like this doesn't happen again. It was harrowing for the players' families, friends and Club mates; and it impacted the reputation of our Club which does so much good work, alongside Souths Cares, in our communities.”

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have granted player Dylan Walker a release from the remaining year of his playing contract today.

Walker made a request of the Club earlier this month to be released from the final year of his contract with the Rabbitohs, in order to take up an extended deal with another NRL Club.

The Club has now granted that release.

Head Coach Michael Maguire joined Rabbitohs Members in wishing Dylan well with his future.

"We wish Dylan all the very best in pursuing the next phase of his career," Coach Maguire said.

"I have known Dylan since he was 17 years of age, we have had some great times together and he has many good attributes."

"I spoke to Dylan about staying, however I appreciate his desire to secure his long-term playing future."

Reynolds rumoured to be linked with the Dragons for 2017

Also a rumour that Souths are looking at Cronk for 2017. Honestly, I think it's a bad move. He'll be 33 and although I think he'd be a good halves coach, I don't think it is worth risking the loss of Reynolds. But if the case is that Reynolds wants out and we're getting Cronk to replace him then I'd understand the move.

Looking forward to seeing how Zane Musgrove goes. He looks ready for some time in first grade this year.

Also looking forward to seeing if Hughes, Whitelaw and Brock Gray get a bit of a run out there.
 
Some standouts for me from the Charity Shield

Damien Cook - instant impact and looked like he could do everything. He also showed great kicking ability and even kicked a goal from the sideline. I think Madge will have a hard time deciding who to play.

McInnes - looked solid. He was impressive defensively as always and could more than hold his own out there. I think Madge will opt with McInnes to start and Cook off the bench during the season.

Cody Walker - very impressive, and I expected this sort of performance from him. I'm not sure his performance alone warrants him a spot in the 17 over Keary, but Madge did say he has another shot next week to continue to impress. He is a more than suitable back up half though.

Paul Carter - few dropped balls here and there but none that were too costly. He was great defensively, hits very hard.

Gosiewski - probably standout young player from the match, he had some great defensive plays and even saved a try iirc.

Hymel Hunt - looked good, could get a few runs in first grade this year if injuries persist.
 

James Packer and Russell Crowe waive $7 million in loans to South Sydney

There are private investors and then there are private investors. In South Sydney's case, the fact that theirs are a multibillionaire and one of the most successful actors in the world makes them not only a glamour club but one with other obvious benefits.

That was rammed home on Sunday when it was announced James Packer and Russell Crowe had waived $7 million in loans to the Rabbitohs, leaving the NRL club to declare it was in the healthiest position financially it has ever been in.
