Terrible finals system in those days.
Teams finishing 3rd faced an elimination final in the first week of the finals.
Pies 1992 and North the following season finished 3rd and were eliminated in the first week.
Byrne played over 200 games but was unlucky, played in 4 losing grand finals and no flags. Arrived at Carlton the year after we won the 72 flag and left the year before we won our next flag in 79.
Very good player for both clubs.
For the lucky blues fans here who remember being at the 1970 grand final or at home listening to the game on the radio; after being so far down at half time it must have been an indescribable feeling when we sealed the game after the goal from Jezza when the ball bounced twice before going...
I just viewed the footage. Easy to miss. You can see on the edge of the footage for a second Foulds kicking the ball towards the Hilton Hotel. Dead ball so would not count on the stats sheet.
1977 grand final draw
A desperate Shane Bond for Collingwood sprinting with the ball on the wing as the siren sounds and nearby Rene Kink has a punch-up with ‘Crackers’ Keenan.
We won an elimination final against the Cats in 1978 but our finals record was still not good between 1975-78.
We had a great season in 1979, finished on top with a 19-3 record and scored over 100 points in 21 games. I cannot remember who was favourite in the second semi but during the season I...

If the blues won the second semi draw they may not have made those changes for the grand final and kept the players in the same...

Adding to this a similar situation in 1976 for us, also with no injuries or excuses.
Finished on top with a percentage that was the best by at least 15%.
Comfortably beat eventual premiers Hawthorn twice that season.
Beat eventual grand finalist North Melb at Arden St by 8 goals in the second...
For an Ess/Rich grand final to happen Carlton would also have had to lose another game to miss the double chance. Carlton actually beat Essendon in the second semi final to book a grand final spot.
Agree that Richmond would have been very dangerous.
