    Best 5 Defenders Since 2000

Rance is the best all round defender in the comp by a mile, and has been for quite some time. He sits comfortably alongside the best defenders of the AFL era.

    Best 5 Defenders Since 2000

Scarlett, Rance, Enright, Glass and Lake for mine. Few more than handy players missing out, if I had another 5, Leppitsch, Clement, Fletcher, Shaw and S.Fisher. McLeod and C.Johnson miss out purely for playing a lot of time out of defense.

Which Geelong potato did you think would be a star?

Could play a bit, had a few injury issues at the wrong time, was BOG for us in the 1982 ressies GF.

How would former great players go in the modern game?

I think you're missing the point. If you took a team from today back to the 50's, hell, even back to the early 90's, they'd be destroyed. It is like this with almost everything else in life. Most people today, if they went much more than 5 years outside of the day they were born, or their...

How would former great players go in the modern game?

They wouldn't run away because 1. They'd be playing one on one, not the zones they do now, 2. They wouldn't be playing on a bowling green surface every week like they do now, and 3. They'd just get knocked out in some way, legal or illegal.

How would former great players go in the modern game?

I think it was Fred Goldsmith who said 'If I played today, I wouldn't get a kick. However, if anyone from today's game came back to my time and played on me, they wouldn't get a kick.' That pretty well sums it up.

Has Lance Franklin surpassed Wayne Carey as the greatest key forward of the modern era?

Exactly. He'd be playing a completely different role nowdays, but would still dominate, because he was the master of pushing up then pushing back and running onto a mark. Very few defenders today (or of any era) could match his combo of size, strength, stamina and mobility.

Has Lance Franklin surpassed Wayne Carey as the greatest key forward of the modern era?

That's it. There was nothing Carey couldn't do on the footy field, and he showed that time and time again.

Has Lance Franklin surpassed Wayne Carey as the greatest key forward of the modern era?

I said defense is better. Don't confuse a more strategic and organized defense as a unit with better individual defenders overall. If you put todays defenders in Carey's time, all but maybe Rance would get destroyed, because there are next to zero that know how to play one on one any more. The...

Has Lance Franklin surpassed Wayne Carey as the greatest key forward of the modern era?

I partially agree with you, in that defense is far more sophisticated now than it was even 10 years ago. However, as a key forward in those days, you would come up against a quality one on one key defender nearly every week, something that rarely happens today. Not to mention in those days, the...

Has Lance Franklin surpassed Wayne Carey as the greatest key forward of the modern era?

Buddy disadvantaged by the era he's playing in. If he'd started 5 or 6 years earlier, the discussion would be a little closer as the way the game was played then would have been far more suited to Buddy running amok week in week out like he did in 2007/08. Thing about Carey though.... not only...

Certified Legendary Thread The absolute brilliance that is the C9 commentary team. CC: Brad McNamara

I'd love to see Ganguly on 9 next summer. Not just because he's very quickly established himself as one of the best in the business, but because he'd be spending the whole time taking the piss out of his co commentators and the vast majority of them wouldn't even notice. Way too smart for those...

Moved Thread Hawthorn "sucking Tasmania dry" ... calls for them to GTFO

The AFL got it wrong with Port and put the club on the brink. That alone should sound warning bells for a Tassie team in the AFL. The other thing is Fitzroy didn't get pushed out of the comp because of debt, it was because they lacked a supporter base. Those that have turned their back on the...

Moved Thread Hawthorn "sucking Tasmania dry" ... calls for them to GTFO

That has been the question for quite some time now, and I'd suggest that if it was clear cut that Tassie was more viable than the 10th Vic team (or even the second teams in NSW and Qld), there would be a full time team in Tassie already.
