If and when that does happen, I think they'll let the guy off, but it'll spark the exact discussion your highlighting. It might seem inconceivable now, but I think it's only a matter of time before we are talking about a world where going back with that level of reckless abandon is... well...
Yes I know that - but the mix of the forward line changes frequently. Rarely will you get a like for like replacement.
More mean timeline wise the plan would likely be to see regular Caddy senior footy similarly to the time Stringer is likely starting to fade out.
Agreed, but I think Caddy would/will be a Stringer replacement.
Caddy is still a obviously only 18-19, and stringer doesn’t strike me as a guy playing into his mid 30s.
It does feel like we’ll cop out half way and go big but sub out a ruckman.
But I think you’re asking for trouble if you go into any game “planning” on who to sub out (eg: a guy coming back from injury). An early injury to anyone, and that plan is out the window.
Yep, I think I'm in the same boat.
Last year felt like a bit of a scattergun approach with the free agents in sort of being like "We've got so much money, we'll throw more at any of you to get some good experienced bodies in for free." Except that they do genuinely all fill a purpose and role...
Get the thought process and I’m sure some would say so too, but I’d disagree with this.
Wright is pretty useless deep forward. Any sort of body and he’s out of the contest. Where he is useful is he’s a beautiful, long set shot. Happy for him to be leading anywhere up to 70m out.
It’s a big...
Yeah I’d guess he’s the sub. No real obvious candidate, and Scott has even said Hind needs a full game. With Menzie out, just makes sense that Hind would get that spot.
Plus, I imagine they’ll have in the back of their minds that Tsatas had a great impact as sub round 1.
Might not be ideal...
I don’t think Shiel plays yet. That was his first run around in a very long time on the weekend.
And before it gets suggested - remember Shiel was downright awful when we bought him back mid-late last year and played him as the sub a couple times.
I think we'll aim to have 18 guys out there, as often as possible.
That's about the extent of our plans. But I hope we'd be consistent with that across the year, regardless of ground.
Yeah 100% agree. I've been preaching this point for a little while.
We need to change our mindset from "Player X is better than Player Y overall, so let's bring in Player X for Player Y." Draper is a better player than Jones, sure. But we need to be thinking a lot more about the 'mix' overall...
I'd be playing both Hobbs and Caldwell. While Hobbs best spot is no doubt midfield, he's a genuine pressure guy who tackles with intent (while also being good for giving away a free kick or 2 a game). But with Guelfi out, he would've been my replacement choice.
Interesting one.
You need a certain number of guys who you'd feel comfortable saying "You're not ideal best 22, but we've got this 2 week injury, and we need you for 2 weeks" (eg: Hind replacing Guelfi and/or Redman this weekend).
Then you need a certain number of guys who are younger...
We do go down the path of drafting projects who clearly are not going to play for a few years at least (by our own admission) and then delist them after anywhere between 2-4 years. Which just doesn't make much sense.
When people talk about depth also, we have had an issue with the balance of...
Cox was the only top 10/first round pick?
I know Westhoff was late.
Dont know for sure, but I don’t think blicvas was a high pick
No idea where/how koutafidies was recruited.
Watched most of his 16-18yr old games, so reasonably across his skillset (not a shot, just a comment that I’ve seen a fair bit of him).
Whitfield not a bad comparison. Not current Whitfield, but maybe what he can get to. But yes, endurance is definitely his go as a runner.
Neutral on leg speed.
Won’t literally burst away from people due to his pace, but certainly not a weakness.
If we’re putting into categories, I would say someone like hind can literally outrun people.
Someone like redman is quick without maybe being able to do that. Roberts is closer to that...
This is true.
Well Blakey will notice that, think to himself, "Damn, that's a shame", quickly duck off to rinse his cereal bowl, come back on and, send a post-it-note to Papley or Heeney to ask where they want it, receive a return message saying "Wherever works for you", to which Blakey nods...
In the meantime, Blakey might genuinely decide to eat a bowl of cereal while he has the ball, pondering which quartile of Logan McDonald's chest he'll hit when delivering him the ball in the next 30-45secs.
Nah we embraced the marketing teams slogan of “dob in a don”. Apparently Nick Hind made a call to the MRP Sunday morning to highlight the Redman incident, and increase his chances for a game.
The club is very proud of him for it.
Some bodies are just not up to it. And his isn’t up to it.
Look forward to another 4-5 years on the list though…1 of which he’ll play 14-17 games and we all think he’s finally turned a corner…
Things just seem to go their way for these things. The Dempsey play-on after the siren from about 52m.
We had 1 game, I think it might've been '07, where everything went our way for a change up there that culminated in a 1-point win.
Most people remember the McPhee being about a metre out of...
The main stuff and obvious stuff that you want a key forward to be good at, he struggled yesterday with (Eg: Marking)
But I think his ground work and follow up work is deceptively good for a “key forward” or at least someone his size. And it’s something as a forward mix we need to be aware of...
