If people watched the vision, you can see he gets these easy goals because:
a) he impacts further up the ground and gets the reward
b) works over his defender who can't keep up
c) reads the play superbly to the point that he knows where to be
Would be nice if we had forward 50 entires like in Q1 for more than just one quarter. Give our forwards a chance instead of bombing it to a 2/3 v 1 or dropping it at their toes.
That 2022 draft is looking grim. After Pick 18 (Weddle), there isn't a whole lot of talent. Noah Long at 58 was a steal for West Coast.
Easy with hindsight to say, but a baffling decision to trade back into the draft to take a small forward who hasn't really shown much apart from an appetite...
Not many other captains in the AFL publicly comment on a teams "fake toughness", only to back it up with back-to-back stinkers, including 9 clangers from 10 disposals against, arguably, the worst AFL team of the century.
Don't get it mistaken. I love watching him when he's up and about, but if...
Ginnivan? The 21 year old small forward with a 40 goal season and a premiership under his belt already? He would be handy in our forward line.
All we ask of players is to give 100% effort. And at times yesterday, Papley was certainly one of some who looked like they'd rather be anywhere else...
Needs to learn how to apply pressure and stick tackles consistently. All the best small forwards in the game (Cameron, Weightman, Pickett) are averaging 3.5-4 tackles a game and their pressure is relentless.
Then you have Papley averaging under 2 tackles a game and only applying pressure when...
Worst captain's game of all-time just about from Papley. Offered nothing, throws his arms up when the ball doesn't get kicked to him. For a small forward, his ability to defend and tackle would have to be close to the worst in the AFL.
Amazing what happens when a team has a forward line capable of laying tackles and applying pressure. A forward line of the three talls + Hayward + Papley does not know how to keep the ball inside 50. Zero desire from anyone to defend and apply any sort of pressure on transition.
I feel bad for...
Zero pressure, zero desire to defend. Again, the lack of pressure forwards is telling. When we get the ball down there, we can't keep it in and they can go from end-to-end in no time.
I think that was more because Essendon threw Cox forward around halfway through the last quarter. We didn't have a tall enough matchup for him with McCartin, Melican and Rampe already occupied with other talls.
Watching the game back, was interesting to see Jye Caldwell's reaction to Draper running through the back of Lloyd. Clearly wasn't impressed at all.
There's a different between hard and tough footy and "hard and tough footy". You think of Hawthorn in 2013-2015...they were uncompromising and...
Watching live at the ground, Hayward's work rate was incredible. One minute he was deep forward, then the next he was running back with the ball to spoil it deep in Melbourne's attack. He and Fox as hard-running flankers who are threats up forward in the air and on the ground are great weapons...
Funny to see the Giants laud their latest debutant as an "academy" player. Grew up in the Riverina and played for the Oakleigh Chargers last year. It is the exact opposite of what the academies should/intended to do.
10 or so years running their academy and the only proper AFL-listed prospect...
