Aware of the issues, but it does show that the club was willing to take a step backwards (Barlow, McCabe, Graham and Tallis all delisted/retired in 04 too) to go forwards.
Took a very strong draft hand into the 04 draft and 4 years later were premiers.
I'm not sure why people are this shocked. These $$ numbers aren't that far off what's been reportedly on the table from rival clubs all year.
7 years is a little more than expected though.
This is an arrogant coaching performance that has filtered down into an arrogant on-field performance.
SDK at full forward. Zach Guthrie on Greene. Trying Stengle on-ball....
Really poor half and now our season is a huge chance to be blown up.
Reap what you sow.
We wouldn't get a thing (quite rightly).
I think people sometimes have a perception that just drafting kids will one day lead to a promise land.
Teams look at Geelong and look at why we're able to develop players the way we do. You need some old heads teaching young kids new tricks.
They did pick up Shiels & Howe. Menegola is an improvement on both and no one can question there's a need for leaders currently (and it's looking like Cunnington might be finished too).
He's the type of person you want around a football club.
Gold Coast & North Melbourne could both do a lot worse than having him on a two year contract IMO, but perhaps he and his family would be looking to go West if he's looking for a new club?
Could be remembering it incorrectly, but his form plummeted in 2020 and he only kicked 24 goals for the year.
Again happy to stand corrected, but my memory was that fans on here were a little miffed that GWS ended up matching Geelong's offer at the time. GWS were under immense salary cap...
He's in the top 5 currently for me (not suggesting this is my view, just how I believe those voting would see it).
Coaches votes and public endorsements from coaching/playing staff suggest he's rated far higher internally than on this board.
Our last ruckman to make the AA side was Steven King, despite our success in the last decade, this is an area of the ground we've struggled with.
SDK has proven he can play at a high level in defence. However, this is an area that for the past 20 years, we've always been strong. The gamble...
Again, "waste" is such an interesting word to use here. Would you be "wasting" Max Gawn or Tim English by playing them in the ruck?
SDK has very good ground ball and disposal skills for a player of his height. He has a great leap and mark to boot too. Rome wasn't built in a day.....
I'm surprised everyone has this view. Imo having a top 5 ruckman in the league is a very appealing prospect. More so than a top 5 backman.
SDK is raw and slight but having a player of his skill around the ball as well his aerial prowess further up the ground is a risk I understand and don't...
You're completely changing your initial argument.
You said Geelong has an unfair advantage over the competition due to lifestyle offering.
Now you've included Brisbane & Collingwood into this mix and want to include access to father-sons as a means to justify it....
All in the last ten years?
Yeo & Cripps were both highly rated youngsters in a similar vein to Bruhn and Henry that neither club wanted to lose. Jetta was a 1st rounder and lead Sydney in goals the year they won a premiership. They along with Redden all played key roles in your 2018...
Tbh maybe we see TDK as a longer term 2nd ruck that offers versatility to pair with Conway, who is very much an old-school number 1 ruck (should he fulfil his potential)?
Yep, I don't disagree with that.
I should preface, when I said "it didn't really work out" in my initial response, it was reference to the situation that WCE are now in is probably quite different to where they thought they'd be when they pulled the trigger. I rate Kelly, it's great to see him...
Look, I'd argue it's not debatable. He finished 4th or 5th in the Brownlow kicked 24 goals for the year from midfield (including 3 and 30 in a prelim) and rightfully took out a place in the AA team. He's having a great season and has stood up massively this year, but he's not at the level from...
Totally agree. He also can play up forward giving us flexibility.
Just needs to understand where to run to get more of the ball. And take a little longer with his kicks. But it's there.
The time period you speak of also coincide with us being successful?
We've also lost players too. Like Kelly. We were just good enough to turn him leaving into a more favourable outcome for us. Guthrie moved on ball and we turned the strong draft hand you gave us into Cameron.
