Implications of the New TV deal

Like all the money to Hawthorn?

Implications of the New TV deal

I wonder what part did the Suns' and GWS' existence play in this. Certainly, the logic was that the two new clubs would be underwritten in part by the increase in media money. IMO I don't think that the AFL will rush into two more expansion teams if only because it is more teams that didn't win...

Unfortunately, I bet this is the way it'll go.

That's the way it should be.

Implications of the New TV deal

Apparently the new TV deal is going to be a big one for the AFL. If the AFL uses the funds wisely they can pay off debt and invest in the future. Investments that will provide a return in the future like grassroots or stadia. I suppose the women's league would be a candidate. Priority number...

Aussie Rules participation vs the other 5 football codes globally.

This probably why the Irish didn't endorse the IR tri series - they have little to gain. Even though IR looks almost like GAA, IMO Australian Football has gained from the inter action of amateurs. IMO Australian Football will not gain widespread promotion in Eire until IR looks more like AR...

Aussie Rules participation vs the other 5 football codes globally.

In today's world it doesn't happen like that and you have to look at developments in Australian Football as four distinct areas. The Southern Hemisphere where there is significant investment in RSA, PNG, NZ and the Pacific to a lesser extent. North America where the man focus for the AFL is the...

Aussie Rules participation vs the other 5 football codes globally.

Now since you are obviously keen on Australian Football having played it overseas, etc then you'd be happy to accept the AFL's official figures as confirmation of the number of participants outside of Australia.

Aussie Rules participation vs the other 5 football codes globally.

    1. My son and I played indoor soccer for a while. That's as far as the interest went. 2. With junior football it starts with Auskick, then varying modified rules to full blown football in teens. Usually AFL aspirants are quickly stream lined into 2nd tier semi-pro leagues the remainder into...

Aussie Rules participation vs the other 5 football codes globally.

So you're saying there's a big number of people playing soccer who have no serious interest? So you're saying there's a big number of people who'd be playing Australian Football if there was a more casual code available?

Aussie Rules participation vs the other 5 football codes globally.

The ABS has changed from census to survey mentallity and also it's methodology . They used to have comprehensive breakdowns but alas for code war fans there has been no useful data for years. Some people would challenge indoor soccer as skewing the figures so to speak.

Aussie Rules participation vs the other 5 football codes globally.

I don't know about the USA but AR are definitely NOT low in Australia especially considering AR is not dominant in NSW or Qld. Or Australia? The ABS records participants as being at least 15 years of age. So while soccer is loaded with youngsters it is more meaningful to to look at the numbers...

Aussie Rules participation vs the other 5 football codes globally.

I would. The significant particpant numbers are in the Southern Hemisphere. Whilst Australian Football is growing all around the world countries close to Australia are the important ones as RU and rl well know.
  24. cos789

Aussie Rules participation vs the other 5 football codes globally.

Too lazy to do the maths myself. The distinction is greater than that. RU is dominant in NZ, a popular minority popular in the UK, popular minority in two Australian states, popular with the white minority in RSA, popular minority in France and not popular in Italy. So a lot of the 275 million...

Aussie Rules participation vs the other 5 football codes globally.

The figure of 100k has been around for nearly a decade. You're obviously a novice but even in the UK football has gone from basically a London league in Britain to an English, Welsh and Scottish league. The playing standard has risen dramatically but I don't think they've beaten arch enemy...

Aussie Rules participation vs the other 5 football codes globally.

Why? Gridiron is huge nationally and thin internationally. RU is hard to say exactly. Have to add up all the countries. But the discussion is centred on international representation so RU clearly wins I was talking internationally the interest in cricket seems to be down at least from an...

As I said, it's all about what criteria you use. Who is to say what is best? Peak/aggregate attendances or peak/aggregate ratings? Or just revert to the water cooler meter. Cricket has experienced a significant drop in apparent popularity for some time now. it'd be interesting to find out...
